Sermons We See

Edgar Guest

I'd rather see a sermon When I see a deed of kindness,

than hear one any day; I am eager to be kind.
I'd rather one should walk with me When a weaker brother stumbles
than merely tell the way. and a strong man stays behind

The eye's a better pupil Just to see if he can help him,

and more willing than the ear, then the wish grows strong in me
Fine counsel is confusing, To become as big and thoughtful
but example's always clear; as I know that friend to be.

And the best of all the preachers And all travelers can witness
are the men who live their creeds, that the best of guides today
For to see good put in action Is not the one who tells them,
is what everybody needs. but the one who shows the way.

I soon can learn to do it One good man teaches many,

if you'll let me see it done; men believe what they behold;
I can watch your hands in action, One deed of kindness noticed
but your tongue too fast may run. is worth forty that are told.

And the lecture you deliver Who stands with men of honor
may be very wise and true, learns to hold his honor dear,
But I'd rather get my lessons For right living speaks a language
by observing what you do; which to every one is clear.

For I might misunderstand you Though an able speaker charms me

and the high advice you give, with his eloquence, I say,
But there's no misunderstanding I'd rather see a sermon
how you act and how you live. than to hear one, any day.
