According to the structural engineer that I interviewed which is, Engr. Ramon B. Dacumos, the
Structural Engineering is one of the areas of specialization of Civil Engineering which focuses on the
framework and designing of structures to hold out against the stress and pressures of the environment and
making it sure that it is safe, secure, and stable throughout their use. In other words, structural engineers
are responsible for making it sure that the buildings and bridges won’t collapse. Structural Engineer
contributes to the design and analysis of structural members of the building. It conforms with the
structural code of the country and that all design analysis will be accepted or be structurally safe. In the
construction field at the site, all the method of construction and specification shall be approved to
standards and be accepted in the construction industry, and also the structural design from materials to
implementation should be strictly followed for the safety of the project.

According to my dad, Engr. Samuel B. Magana which is also a construction engineer that I
interviewed, Construction Engineering and Management involves the utilization of scientific and
technical knowledge to infrastructure construction projects. They manage the planning stage and the
design stage of the construction projects. They also supply data gather at site as basis for the design of the
project and carefully evaluates the parameters of the design if it is suitable in the actual site condition.
They are responsible for managing the entire construction implementation of the whole project including
the turn-over to the client once it is completed. They are also key players when it comes in the successful
completion of every construction project. They are most likely to work on broad projects which also
includes the design of drainage and sewage systems, constructing buildings, and developing highways or
railroads.

Geotechnical Engineering is one of the areas of specialization in Civil Engineering that deals with
the engineering behavior of earth materials such as soil, rocks, water, etc. According to Engr. Nibal B.
Dolendo, the first Geotechnical Engineer that I interviewed, Geotechnical Engineering is engaged in the
structures’ foundations that includes the assessment of data gather from the field, finding ways to ensure
that the structure foundations are stable and overseeing work in a construction site. Their contribution to a
certain project is to ensure the stability of the structures by evaluating the data and define the type of
foundation structures, earthworks, sub-grade of pavement required for the intended man-made structures
to be built but not limited to the deep foundations such as retaining walls, reservoirs, dams, tunnels, and
dikes. Without the proper determination of the structures to be built in the given areas as to the soil
properties it will fall and a major disaster will be experienced by the surroundings neighborhood.
According to Engr. William Balaoing Jr., the study the soil condition underneath the development and
gives proposals for the foundation design. They also study the effect of excavations to surrounding areas
and design earth retaining structures during excavation works.

Transportation Engineering is responsible for designing or improving the transportation system in

the country when it comes to traffic flow on roads, airplanes, trains, ships, buses, and other mode of
transportations in the country. According to Engr. Israel Ponce, the transportation engineer that I
interviewed, he has been involved in different design and construction of infrastructure development
projects. He said that he is proud that he has significantly contributed to the betterment of the
communities where his projects are situated by providing adequate, safe and sustainable transport
accesses. He also said that it was his responsibility in those projects to generate horizontal and vertical
alignment of the motorway, corridors, junction configurations, visibility analysis, swept path analysis, and
drainage considerations prior to full drainage design. He also said that the design of all motorways should
not only satisfy the minimum design requirements of the region but it should also take into consideration
the safety of both users and pedestrians. So as a Transportation Engineering Professional, he said that it
is his pleasure to design and build a network for the betterment of the community not just working on
projects. Transportation Engineers pave the way for a better and sustainable transportation network, from
schematic, concept, detailed design to construction phase of the project.

Water Resources Engineering is one of the areas of specializations of Civil Engineering that
implies the plan for the new systems and apparatuses that can assist to manage the human water
resources. Water Resources Engineering is a quantitative study of the water cycle in terms of the
circulation and distribution of the water. As a Water Resources Engineer, they are responsible for
providing, developing, and sustaining potable water in the country. According to Engr. Rodel B.
Tandugon, the engineer that I interviewed, Water Resources Engineers are responsible for the design and
overseeing projects involving the provision of potable water, disposal of wastewater and sewage and
prevention of flood related damage. He said that they also contribute to create the layout for the entire
water, drainage and sewerage systems that are used by the municipalities for the appropriate utilization of
potable water, transporting and treat discarded water and the restructuring of outdated sewage system in
accordance with the existing law which provide protection for the natural resources in the area.

Environmental Engineering is one of the area of specializations of Civil Engineering that deals
with the scientific topics such as biology, chemistry, ecology, geology, hydraulics, hydrology,
microbiology, and mathematics in order to generate solutions that will secure and also enhance the health
of living organisms and enhance the quality of the environmental surroundings. Environmental
Engineering now includes such ecologic issues as endangered species with ecologic issues According to
Engr. Agnes Goze, the Environmental Engineer that I interviewed, as an Environmental Engineer, her
primary contribution would be the protection and enhancement of the site environment. She makes sure
that the company complies with environmental laws, rules and regulations, act as Pollution Control
Officer, monitors water and air quality by making sure that all discharges and emissions are within the
DENR (Department of Health and Natural Resources) standards, and also making sure that the company
secures environmental permits. She also said that she is responsible for preparing the Environmental
Management and Monitoring Plan and likewise implements it too.
