The Easter Triduum is one great liturgy that lasts for three days. It begins with the gathering on Holy
Thursday and lasts through vespers on Easter Sunday. “Glory in the Cross,” whose theme is drawn from the
entrance antiphon provided in The Roman Missal for Holy Thursday, is offered as a thematic piece designed
to support and enhance the unity of this one liturgy.
Strive to give the piece a different vesture each time it is sung, thereby highlighting the difference in mood
each of the Triduum days. This can be accomplished both by the manner of performance and by the
accompaniment used. For example, on Good Friday, the arrangement should be kept simple and rather stark,
perhaps using guitar or quiet organ for accompaniment. In contrast, on Easter, the orchestration might
consist of full organ, brass, strings and choir, making the performance fittingly energetic and majestic.
Since this hymn sets the musical theme for the entire Triduum, it should be sung first as the gathering piece
on Holy Thursday. On Friday, it may be used as the conclusion to the Veneration of the Cross. And finally,
on Easter, it may be sung either as a post-communion hymn or as the conclusion of the liturgy. Verses are
provided for each of the three days and can be combined in any way desired. The piece may also be used
effectively as a thematic hymn all during the period of the Easter mystagogia.
