Forgive the times we lose focus and forget the praise we owe you,
offering it to the world instead. You alone are worthy of our praise.
You alone are worthy of our adoration. You alone are worthy of our
love. Creator who makes all things new, renew our hearts and
strengthen our resolve, that we may graciously receive what you have
in store for us today.

*Words of Grace and Mercy

From generation to generation, God’s love overcomes human
sinfulness. God is committed to fresh starts and new creations. This is
good news!
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
*Prayer Response
(Hymn 327, stanza 3)
Eternal are thy mercies, Lord; eternal truth attends thy word:
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thy praise shall sound from shore to shore,
till suns shall rise and set no more.
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

First Scripture John 13:31-35 Al Cubbage

Anthem Offertory John Ness Beck

With what shall I come before the Lord,
and bow myself before God on high?
Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings,
Shall I come before Him with yearling calves?
Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams,
with ten thousand rivers of oil?
Shall I give Him my first born for my transgressions,
the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul?
He has shown you, O man; he has shown you what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice
and to love kindness and to walk humbly,
walk humbly with your God?

This intense hymn of commitment to God (addressed as Love, Light, and Joy) closes with an invocation of
the ultimate testimony to those attributes (the Cross). The composer, a Scotsman, named this specially-
composed tune for the 11th-century patroness of Scotland.

Postlude “Postlude in E”Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck

This text formed a very small part of an elaborate Christian missionary pageant in the early 20th century,
yet it has endured while the grander aspects of that production have faded away. It is set to a simple 19th-
century tune that does not get in the way of its message.

Welcome to First Congregational Church of Evanston, UCC

We are so glad you chose to be with us today!

No matter who you are, or where you are on life’s
journey, you are welcome here.

Visitors: Please sign the attendance pad in your

pew with your name, address, and email so we may send a note to say
hello. Visit our website to learn more, follow us on Facebook or Instagram,
and sign up for our weekly e-newsletter to keep informed of life at FCCE.

Babies and Toddlers: Little ones enrich our community and add vibrancy
to our congregation. Please don't fret about coos or cries during the
service. All ages are welcome here. Visit our rocking chair area to find
books & coloring pages for use during the service, or drop off infants to 3
year-olds in our staffed and colorful nursery on the lower level.

Children: After the Children's Message, preK-elementary students are

invited to walk with the teachers to our multi-age Sunday School classroom
in the Church House, 1/2 block down Hinman Ave. We aim to make
Sunday School a place where children can deepen their relationship with
God and one another, speak openly from their hearts, and have fun with
crafts and games! Caregivers are always welcome to sit in. At the end of
Sunday School, teachers bring the children back to the sanctuary to join
their families for fellowship time.

Everyone: All are welcome to join us after service in the entryway or

outside for refreshments and conversation. There are opportunities to
learn, to serve, to grow, to care and be cared for here. You are important to
us. God is still speaking!
