Daylighting ROOF SOLAR COLLECTOR; NATURAL VENTILATION; THERMAL PERFORMANCE;
COMFORT; IMPACT; HEAT; TEMPERATURE; BUILDINGS; BEHAVIOR; CHIMNEY "The main
objective of this paper is to present a full-scale field experimental investigation
of a Bio-Climatic House (BCH) under the tropical climate of Thailand. The BCH
included several innovative building envelope configurations, i.e., a Roof Solar
Collector (RSC), a Bio-Climatic Roof (BCR), a Modified Trombe Wall (MTW), and a
Glazed Solar Chimney Wall (GSCW) with the aim of maximizing natural ventilation for
heat gain and indoor heat accumulation reduction as well as to improve the indoor
air condition while providing appropriate natural daylighting. The field
experimentation was set up to measure the indoor temperature, relative humidity,
illuminance, and air velocity inside the BCH in the summer, rainy and winter
seasons in 2014. Construction cost was also analyzed and presented. The
experimental results demonstrate that the BCH design could efficiently operate
year-round under the tropical climate conditions of Thailand; it reduced indoor air
temperature by 2-3 degrees C compared to that of ambient air temperature and the
indoor relative humidity was also lower than the ambient conditions by 10%-20%. The
indoor illuminance varied between 450 and 700, 450-800, and 450-765 lx in winter,
summer, and rainy, respectively. The indoor air velocity was in the range of 0.04-
0.09 m/s and the corresponding ACH in the range of 9-14. Finally, economic analysis
revealed that with labor and material costs of 560 USD/m(2) and 1120 USD/m(2), a
payback period of approximately 7.39 years would be feasible. Therefore, the BCH
with RSC, BCR, and MTW applications is an appropriate building envelope technology
for residential house integration and deserves promotion in a tropical climate
region. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved." "[Thateenaranon, Piyachart]

SOLAR PANELS; ENERGY; SHADE; ROOF; PRODUCTIVITY "Shading in greenhouses is a simple
and cheap method usually used to reduce the intensity of solar radiation and air
temperature. Moreover, combining Photovoltaic (PV) panels and crops on the same
cropland could alleviate the increasing competition for the agricultural land
between food and energy production. In addition, the integration of PV with
greenhouses could reduce, or partially replace the energy consumption for
greenhouse crop production. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the
shading effect of semi-transparent mono-crystalline silicon double glazing
photovoltaic panels (STPV), mounted on top of an agricultural greenhouse, which
occupied 20% of the roof area, on the microclimate conditions and the growth of
lettuce plants inside a greenhouse. Results showed that the combination of STPV and
polyethylene cover decreased the solar radiation by 35% to 40% compared to the use
of polyethylene cover only for clear days which was in the acceptable range of
photosynthetically active radiation for lettuce plants. Moreover, STPV shading
decreases the air temperature by 1 degrees C-3 degrees C and had no effect in the
relative humidity under natural ventilation. Furthermore, there were no significant
differences (p<0.05) in the growth of lettuce plants between the shaded greenhouse
by the STPV and the unshaded. Shading insignificantly increased the fresh weight,
leaf area and the chlorophyll contents (p<0.05). In conclusion, the integration of
STPV modules can decrease the solar irradiation and the internal air temperatures
as well as generate electric energy for environmental control systems without
significant influence on the growth of lettuce plants. Meanwhile, it can decrease
the water consumption by decreasing the evapotranspiration rate." "[Hassanien,

EMBODIED CARBON; REDUCTION "The upkeep of existing buildings has a great role to
play in reducing the carbon emissions of the built environment. Facade upgrade
represents one of the most effective interventions to improve both thermal
efficiency and aesthetic appeal of existing buildings. Double Skin Facades (DSFs)
have much to offer due to their use of solar and wind energy to passively heat and
cool indoor spaces, whilst guaranteeing freedom and flexibility in the aesthetic
design of the refurbished building. However, DSFs also bear an increase in the
embodied energy and carbon due to the additional materials required for the extra
skin throughout all life cycle stages. In this article, life cycle assessment (LCA)
and dynamic energy modelling have been combined through a parametric approach to
obtain figures for the whole-life cycle carbon assessment of 384 different
configurations of an innovative, timber-made DSF for UK low-carbon refurbishments.
Additionally, the structural design of the facade was also investigated through a
structural optimisation procedure which takes into account all relevant loads and
ensures minimal use of the structural material. Results show that operational
savings outweigh the embodied impacts and therefore the proposed DSF is a viable
and effective solution for net carbon-negative refurbishments. The operational
energy modelling also contributes to the characterisation of DSFs thermal behaviour
in temperate climates. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved." "[Pomponi,

numerical model is developed for simulating a single or multi-story Double Skin
Facade integrating Photovoltaics (DSF-PV). The DSF-PV can co-generate solar
electricity and heat, while it also allows daylight to be transmitted to the
interior space. The buoyancy-driven air flow inside the cavity may be assisted by a
fan to cool down the photovoltaics while providing natural or hybrid ventilation to
adjacent zones. Automated roller shades are also implemented in the model and help
regulate heating and cooling loads but also control the daylight levels in the
indoor space. A parametric analysis for different control strategies for the
airflow within the cavity and the roller shading devices is performed with the
purpose to apply the proposed methodology to minimize the heating and cooling
demand of the DSF-PV system. In addition, a parametric analysis for different
adjacent zones floor areas is performed. The simulations show that a DSF-PV system
can supply approximately 120kVVh/facade area/year covering the yearly electricity
demand of the adjacent office if the floor area is approximately less than 3 times
larger than the floor area. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved."

design of solar chimney for cooling load reduction and other applications in

NATURAL VENTILATION; NUMERICAL INVESTIGATIONS; SYSTEM; WALL; PERFORMANCE; CLIMATES;
MODEL; ROOF; HOT "Cooling load accounts for more than 70% of the electric energy
used in buildings in the Middle East. This paper presents a passive method to
reduce the cooling load in buildings. The proposed concept includes adding an
external solar shield enclosing an air gap between it and the outer wall of the
building. This external solar shield layer would absorb the solar radiation
incident on the outer walls of the building and get heated inducing a convective
airflow in the gap between the layer and the building. This is an example of solar
chimney in a flat geometry with a superficial resemblance to Trombe wall.
Conventional Trombe wall channel heats the building external wall and creates a
convective flow in-between a transparent glass layer and the heated wall. This hot
flow is used either as a warm inlet air to the building in winter or help inducing
airflow from inside the building for ventilation in summer. However, in the present
work, the solar chimney induced airflow is purely external to the building. The
proposed external solar shield starts with a glass layer from outside followed by
an opaque porous metallic layer followed by an air channel before the building
outer Walls. The absorbing porous layer would get heated up quickly and transfer
its heat to the air in the gap effectively due to its large surface area. The
porous layer thickness is optimized at 15 cm while the air gap is optimized at 0.3
m. Numerical simulations based on finite volume analysis using ANSYS Fluent were
carried out for a wall of 3 m height. Comparisons of the performance of buildings
with its outer walls shielded by white painted, black painted and glazed walls are
presented and discussed with respect to that of buildings with bared outer walls as
a control. Putting glazing alone after an air gap, expectedly, increases the heat
gained by 47-56% compared to 0.7 emissivity simple bared wall. Single black and
white solar shielding walls reduce the heat gain by 30 and 67%, respectively.
However, the proposed design of a solar chimney with a glass outer wall followed by
a porous foam metal layer on its inner surface, reduced thermal gain by 67-79%.
This results in electrical cooling load reduction by about 28%. Furthermore, the
heated airflow induced by a solar chimney formed with a 20 x 3 m south wall can be
utilized to induce water evaporation of 625-1046 kg/day allowing active evaporative
cooling and/or water desalination under solar irradiation condition of Dhahran,

combinations of passive and active measures that exploit specific onsite features.
However, in temperate climates, reducing the heating demand (by south-oriented,
triple-glazed curtain walls) has as a direct consequence an increased cooling
demand. Using data collected over three years (2013-2015) in a mountain temperate
continental climate, this paper analyzes the effect of (passive) natural night
ventilation and (active) ceiling cooling on reducing the cooling demand in large
office spaces in energy-efficient buildings. The results match those modeled using
in-field climatic input data, whereas simulations using interpolated data lead to
differences compared with experimental data. The results show that natural night
ventilation decreases the cooling demand by 97% in June, and reductions of 33% are
reached during the hottest month, August. When involving natural night ventilation
and ceiling active cooling (heat pump in reversed mode), 88% coverage of the
cooling demand is reached in August. A significant indoor temperature gradient (10
degrees C) is registered during hot days, with peak differences in early afternoon,
suggesting a need for customized cooling algorithms. (C) 2017 American Society of

consumption. This research proposed a new double skin facade using photovoltaic
(PV) blinds as a shading device (named PVB-DSF), which could realize multi-function
of power generation, solar penetration reduction and flexible daylighting control.
The purpose of this comparative study is to demonstrate the superb thermal
performance of PVB-DSF. Experimental rig was built at hot-summer and cold-winter
zone of China. The first stage comparative study was conducted to evaluate system
thermal performance under the effects of ventilation modes, PV-blind angle and PV-
blind spacing. The second stage study was conducted to compare thermal performance
between PVB-DSF and standard DSF. A validated numerical model was used to describe
standard DSF. The results suggested the operation of natural ventilation mode and
indicated the evident influence of PV-blind spacing on system performance. The
comparison study further demonstrated that PVB-DSF can save about 12.16% and 25.57%
of energy in summer compared with conventional DSF with and without shading blinds.
The insulation performance of PVB-DSF is shown by its daily average heat transfer
coefficient which was as low as 2.247. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved."

VELOCIMETRY; CLIMATE; CAVITY; SIMULATION "This research focuses on the analysis of
Open Joint Ventilated Facades with both vertical and horizontal apertures. The
fluid-dynamic and thermal behaviour of this passive system is experimentally
evaluated at the horizontal and vertical joints. The experimental study is
performed considering no wind, and solar radiation corresponding to 4 x 10(8), 9 x
10(8) and 1 x 10(9) Rayleigh values. The experimental analysis of the fluid-dynamic
behaviour in the facade is conducted through the set-up and optimization of a
Stereo-PIV facility. The stereoscopic technique is based on particle image
velocimetry in fluids, calculating three dimensional vector velocity fields along
selected surfaces inside the ventilated air cavity. Based on the instantaneous
measured field velocity it is possible to calculate other factors such as the
average field velocity and the turbulence intensity, or to identify the main
turbulence structures in the flow. The results indicate that the mean velocity and
the turbulence quantities are enhanced by buoyancy. It has also been observed that
the instabilities in the flow increase with the Ra numbers. The airflow rate
through the facade joints has been calculated. Additionally, the air temperature
inside the ventilated cavity as well as the surface temperature of the panels has
been monitored and compared. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved."

configurations of double glass window (DGW) coupling to a room is presented. The
DGW consists of two vertical semitransparent walls separated by a 12 mm air gap.
The effect of varying the ambient temperature and the incident solar radiation in
the warm climate conditions in Mexico is analyzed. Numerical simulations were
conducted for four configurations; Case 1: clear glass + air gap + clear glass
(Reference); Case 2: clear glass + air gap + absorbent glass; Case 3: clear glass +
air gap + Low-e glass; and Case 4: clear glass + air gap + reflective glass.
Optical transmittance and specular reflectance were measured individually and in
one sample piece for each case. The results showed that Case 4 reduces the heat
flux to the indoors by up to 73%, with respect to Case I. Moreover, Cases 2 and 3
had a similar behavior, obtaining a reduction of indoor heat flow close to 33.5%
with respect to Case 1. Case 4 is the best option for energy savings in a warm
climate, where it is possible to save up to $20.29 USD per kW h per year, in
comparison to Case 1. In addition, the payback period for Case 4 is 3.7 years.
Therefore, the use of reflective double pane window is highly recommended in
Mexican warm climates. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved." "[Aguilar,

School building; windows; airflow rate; solar heat gain; daylight

presents results of a study investigating ventilation mode, solar heat gain and
daylight performance via vertical fenestration of a common school building in
Portugal. In recent years, there has been a growing awareness in energy-efficient
building design and operation of the building stock. The windows are usually the
first component to be replaced by new and more efficient ones. Dynamic
envelope/window systems may optimize the performance of the building when taking
into account airing, solar heat gain rejection/acceptance and daylight admission.
Higher thermal resistance glazing implies a reduction of solar transmittance. A
typical school building located in CovilhA, Portugal was used for the study. Three
different conventional windows were used for comparison: a single pane as found in
the building, a double-pane to increase the thermal resistance and a double-pane
with daylighting controls. Different simulation tools were used during this study.
To be comparable with other studies, several ratios were present, namely the
window/wall, the glazing/wall ratios, the window/floor and the glazing/floor ratios
as well as the window opening area. This paper presents the obtained airflow and
solar gains on both the heating and cooling season as well as the level of daylight
for both overcast and non-overcast skies. The findings are essential for the
assessment of passive building energy-saving techniques on a hypothetical building
refurbishment by replacing old windows. However, specific adaptive actions to
improve indoor environmental quality are also needed." "[Carlos, Jorge S.] Univ

performance of a naturally ventilated PV facade system. A rigorous combined
experimental and numerical approach is established. The real energy performance of
the system has been evaluated through a long-term high resolution monitoring of a
typical ventilated PV facade system. A numerical model based on TRaNsient SYstem
Simulation (TRNSYS) package was developed to assess the thermal and energy
performance of the system, which has been verified by a series of statistical
analysis using the data collected from the experiment. The validated model was then
used to assess the energy and thermal performance of a 7.4 kWp prototype ventilated
PV facade system in Izmir, Turkey. The results of this study demonstrated that
ventilation in the air cavity of the PV facade system could significantly improve
energy performance of the system even in a southeast facing facades. The
quantitative analysis provides useful guidance to the system designers for the
improvement of energy efficiency of the PV facade system. (C) 2017 The Authors.

Effects of the geometrical and operational parameters and alternative outer

BUILDING VENTILATION; FLOW; SYSTEM "The purpose of this paper is to
investigate the performance of solar chimney used for natural ventilation of closed
enclosure in order to save energy. To achieve this purpose, a mathematical model
simulating the performance of solar chimney was developed. The geometrical and
operational parameters were considered. These parameters include: incident solar
radiation, wind speed, ambient temperature and the dimensions of the solar chimney
height, gap and width. Moreover, different chimney cover material were examined. A
computer program was developed to solve the governing energy and conservation
equations simultaneously. The model results were compared with available published
data. There was a good agreement between the present results and the published
data. The present study considered the performance of a solar chimney under
specified meteorological conditions at Cairo. The results showed that the air
change rate per hour (ACH) was significantly depended on the wind speed as well as
the dimensions (height, gap and width). The chimney gap, wind speed influenced
largely the air flow rate. The effect of chimney height was not significant enough
to be cost effective. The results showed that the air change rate per hour (ACH)
throughout the year was more than the desired ventilation standards in enclosure
space. Using materials other than glass to construct the outside cover of the
chimney achieved a higher flow rate than the standards air change rate per hour
(ACH). In addition, both the reduction in construction cost and safety ate
achieved. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved." "[Hosien, M. A.; Selim,

employed to validate the characteristics of the flow and heat transfer. For the
accuracy of numerical predictions, the method of Solar Ray Tracing was used for
thermal radiation flux as boundary condition on the wall. The local heat transfer
correlation was investigated to predict surrounding wind speed upon device cover.
Three sorts of glasses and several aspect ratios of flow channels have been
compared to conclude the optimal configuration. In addition, four important
factors, such as the stagnant layer thickness, emissivity on the illustrated
surface, mass flow rate and the height of the device, are also considered and
discussed in detail. The result showed that the optimal design is dominated by the
combination of an aspect ratio of 50 mm:10 mm, and appropriate mass flow rate to
the height of the device. The present work on thermal energy. collection can assist

PCM thermal storage design in buildings: Experimental studies and
applications to solaria in cold climates APPLIED ENERGY English
Article Phase change materials; PCM;
Solaria; Building design; Building simulation; Experimental studies; Cold climates
applications ZERO-ENERGY BUILDINGS; OPTIMIZATION; PERFORMANCE; SIMULATION;
PANELS; WALLS "As energy availability and demand often do not match, thermal
energy storage plays a crucial role to take advantage of solar radiation in
buildings: in particular, latent heat storage via phase-change material is
particularly attractive due to its ability to provide high energy storage density.
This paper analyzes the performance of a building-integrated thermal storage system
to increase the energy performances of solaria in a cold climate. A wall opposing a
highly glazed facade (south oriented) is used as thermal storage with phase change
materials embedded in the wall. The study is based on both experimental and
simulation studies. The concept considered is particularly suited to retrofits in a
solarium since the PCM can be added as layers facing the large window on the
vertical wall directly opposite. Results indicate that this PCM thermal storage
system is effective during the whole year in a cold climate. The thermal storage
allows solar radiation to be stored and released up to 6-8 h after solar
irradiation: this has effects on both the reduction of daily temperature swings (up
to 10 degrees C) and heating requirements (more than 17% on a yearly base).
Coupling of the thermal storage system with natural ventilation is important during
mid-seasons and summer to improve the PCM charge-discharge cycles and to reduce
overheating. Results also show that cooling is less important than heating,
reaching up to 20% of the overall annual energy requirements for the city of
Montreal, Canada. Moreover, the phase change temperature range of the material used
(18-24 degrees C) is below typical summer temperature levels in solaria, but the
increase in thermal capacity of the room alone can reduce annual cooling
requirements by up to 50%. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved."

J "Smith, SI" "Smith, Shane Ida" Superporous
Intelligent Hydrogels for Environmentally Adaptive Building Skins MRS ADVANCES
English Article
"This work explores responsive hydrophilic polymers for convergent functions
of climate control with architectural material systems. In buildings, the
transition across exterior and interior space occurs through the envelope, which is
an enclosure system that mediates heat, light, air and moisture transfer functions.
Conventional building envelopes are typically constructed to form a barrier that
insulates and hermetically separates outdoor and indoor conditions. The dynamic
environmental responses of superporous intelligent hydrogels are shown to be
beneficial at the interior layer of a double-skin glazing system for building
envelope applications. If the hydrogels are integral to the building envelope
system, then various environmental functions (such as natural daylighting, heat
transfer, airflow and moisture control) can be achieved through integrated
actuators to result in improved building energy performance. The composite
embodiments emulate bio-analytical functions when embedded microbore-tube water
channels serve as actuators for swelling and deswelling kinetics respectively. Each
prototype is conceived in response to hot-arid climate contexts. The prototype
presented here is a lightweight ventilation cooling and daylighting system. Initial
prototypes are inserted into an environmental test-bed that is consequently divided
into two chambers to represent an outdoor and indoor condition. The input chamber
includes controllable heat and light elements that affect the dynamics of the
hydrogel system. The output chamber on the opposite side of the prototype division
includes temperature, humidity and photo sensors that are connected to an Arduino
board for data collection. Dependent upon the environmental conditions of chamber
two, a control program actuates small hydro-pump to saturate the gels with water.
The initial results provide correlations between mechanical (elasticity) and
thermal (conductivity) properties. Current work in progress includes documentation
of average rates for sorption-desorption kinetics and correlations between
saturation loading and visible transmittance. The physical test data will also be
integrated into building-scale energy performance simulations and hygrothermal
transfer numerical analysis for building envelope compositions. The embedded
material logic of the hydrogel is exploited in an architectural configuration for a
convergence of prior building mechanical system and building envelope functions.
The current work demonstrates a highly promising application of soft-skin membranes
for much needed reductions in energy consumption within the building sector."

asymmetric heating; vertical channel; CFD NATURAL-CONVECTION; VERTICAL CHANNEL;
REVERSAL; PLATES; ONSET; HEAT "Study concerning a double skin flow with secondary
ventilation was conducted numerically, in order to understand the basic mechanisms
of the free convection in an open channel asymmetrically heated with uniform heat
flux density (510 W/m(2)). The vertical channel corresponds to a double skin
facade, which was immersed in a tank filled with water. The tank corresponds to the
environment which allows us to overcome pressure conditions at the inlet and the
outlet of the channel. The use of water allows neglecting radiation effect. The
mass conservation equations of momentum and energy are solved using the finite
volume method and numerical simulations are performed using Ansys Fluent CFD
software. Our interest, in this work, is the study of the influence of the position
and the size of an opening in the adiabatic wall, which represents secondary
ventilation, on the flow dynamics and the heat transfer." "[Bouraoui, M.; Rouabah,
