Bolt Torque and Gasket Requirements for Fiberglass Flanged Fittings

Please see notes below for important information regarding sealing surfaces for flat face flanges.

Gaskets:
Use full face gasket , 3/16” thick, with a Shore A scale hardness of 60 to 70 durometer.

Torque Requirements:
Use of a torque wrench is strongly recommended for installation of flanged piping systems.
Use SAE standard washers under all nuts and bolt heads.

Flange Sizes up to 1.5”

Maximum torque for flanged fittings under 1.5” is 10 ft. Lbs.

Flange Sizes 2” to 14”

Maximum torque on dry bolt threads is 50 ft. lbs.
Maximum torque on lubricated threads is 35 ft. lbs.

Flange Sizes 14” to 20”

Maximum torque on dry bolt threads is 50 ft. lbs.
Maximum torque on lubricated threads is 100 ft. lbs.

Manways - 24” Sizes

Top Manway: maximum torque is 35 ft. lbs.
Light Duty Side Manway: maximum torque is 35 ft. lbs.
Standard Duty Side Manway: maximum torque is 50 ft. Lbs.

Bolting To Other Piping Systems:

It is often necessary to bolt fiberglass flanges to other

components which do not have a full flat face surface such
as raised face flanges, butterfly or check valves having Bolt Torquing Sequences
partial liner facings, and to Van Stone flange hubs. The for Flanged Fittings
addition of a hard spacer ring or steel back-up ring placed
between the raised face and the outer edge of the flange to
form a full flat face on the mating flange is recommended.
The purpose of the spacer is to fill the gap outside the raised
face to prevent bolt loads from bending and breaking the
fiberglass flange.
