1. Design the dimension of square footing to carry a column load 1500 kN. The base of footing
will be placed at 1.2 m below the level of surrounding ground surface and the minimum factor
of safety 2.5 is required. Soil around the footing is medium dense sandy soil with φ′ = 35°
and the total unit weight of soil γt = 19.0 kN/m3. The water table is far below the footing level
and you can ignore its effect.

2. Design the diameter of a circular footing to carry a column load of 1500 kN. The base of the
footing will be placed at 1.0 m below the level of surrounding ground surface and the minimum
factor of safety 2.5 is required. Soil around the footing is clay with unconfined compression
strength of 100 kN/m2 and the total unit weights of soil γt = 18.2 kN/m3. The water table is
at the footing base level.

3. A square foundation measuring 1.0 × 1.0 m is constructed on a layer of sand. We are given
that Df = 1.0 m, γ = 15 kN/m3, ϕ′ = 35°, and c′ = 0 kPa. A rock layer is located at depth
0.4 m below the bottom of the foundation. Using a factor of safety of 3, determine the gross
allowable load the foundation can carry.
