Soil mechanics II Assignment

Show all the necessary steps to solve the following problems

(Q1) A strip footing 2m wide carries a load intensity of 400KN/m2 at a depth of 1.2m in sand
.the saturated unit weight of sand is 19.5KN/m3 and unit weight above water table is
16.8KN/m3.the shear strength parameters are c’=0 and  ' =35o.determine the factor of safety with
respect to shear failure for the following case of location of water table.

(A) Water table is 4m below ground level

(B) Water table is 0.5m below ground level

(C) Water table is 1.2m below the base of the footing

(Q2) Determine the depth at which a circular footing of 2m diameter to be founded to provide a
factor of safety of 3. If it has to carry a safe load of 1600KN. The foundation soil has
C’=10KN/m2,  ' =300 and unit weight =18KN/m3.use Terzaghi’s Analysis.

(Q3) The square footing must be designed to carry a 294 KN load. Use Meyerhof’s analysis to
determine the width B of the square footing if FS=3,  ' =350 and D is 1m.

(Q4) A square footing 1.5 m is to be constructed in sand with c’ = 0,  ' =400. The thickness of the
footing is 0.45 m and its top surface is level with the horizontal ground surface. The footing is
subjected to a central vertical force of 700 KN and a central horizontal force (parallel to the
sides) of 210 kN. Find the ultimate bearing capacity by Meyerhof’s equations. The unit weight of
the sand is 18 kN/m3.

(Q5) A footing 2 m square is located at a depth of 1 m below the ground surface in a deep

deposit of compacted sand,  ' =300, c’=0, and  sat =18 kN/m3. The footing is subjected to a

vertical load of 500 KN and a moment about the Y-axis of 125 kN・m. The ground water table
is 5 m below the ground surface. Use Meyerhof’s bearing capacity equation and calculate the
factor of safety. Assume the soil above the ground water is also saturated.

(Q6) Design a strip footing to carry a load of 800kN/m at a depth of 2.0m in a c- soil having a
unit weight of 18kN/m3 and shear strength parameters as C=20KN/m3 and =24. Determine the
width of the footing if the location of ground water table is 0.5m blew the base of the ground
.surface. Consider FS=3.0 and sat =20kN/m3. use Terzaghi’s bearing capacity equation. Use
Nc=23.36, Nq=11.40 and N=8.58
