Unit 9: Description of A Place
Unit 9: Description of A Place
Tarapoto is the largest city in the Department of San Martin in Peru. The
area is warm, humid and supports a scorching sun with high
temperatures. There are beautiful landscapes, rivers and waterfalls near
the city, where you can enjoy the flora and fauna of the region. You can
enjoy adventure tourism, canoeing, white water rafting, expeditions and
hikes. Local crafts and souvenirs are on sale often making use of
attractive jungle resources such as exotic seeds, feathers, coconut shells
and straw as well as gifts made with Peruvian silver, gold and other
precious stones.
There is also of course a wide variety of local food and dishes. Local
folklore is well represented and of special interest is the native
community of Lamas and the ethnic museum there. This is
approximately 30 minutes by car from Tarapoto. The best months for a
first visit to Tarapoto are probably between June and October when there
is little rain.
