men and women’s job

Good morning. How are you today? How did you come to school this morning? / Did you
have something for breakfast today?

 How can you divide jobs?

 What are women and men responsible for?
 What are the most popular jobs in Hungary?

Possible answers:

Jobs are divided up into two large catergories: blue collar and white collar. Blue collar jobs are generally
manual labour type, such as factory work, building and construction. The white collar jobs are the office
work such as bank clerks, office workers, teachers, computer operators.

If a woman goes out to work, she is responsible for at least three jobs: she must be a good mother, a good
housewife and a good worker. As a mother she has to look after the children. As a housewife she has to do
the housework: clean the floor, dust the furniture, hoover the carpet, cook, do the washing up, do the
shopping, do the ironing.
Men are usually good at repairing the household devices. They can replace a burnt-out light bulb, stick on
wallpaper, and repair a leaking water pipe. A good husband should share the responsibility of bringing up a
child and caring for the family with his wife.

There are lots of professions but the most popular are lawyer, doctor, teacher, engineer, mechanic, builder,
driver, soldier, shop assistant, carpenter and many others.

7. How often do you go to the cinema / theatre?
8. Do you have free-time at weekends?
9. What do you do at weekends?

A hobby is an activity that you like doing and do it quite often. I think it is important to have a hobby
because hobbies are a way of recreation. Nowadays many young people spend their time at home, playing
computer games or watching TV. There are different kinds of hobbies, for example colleting things (stamps,
coins, autographs, napkins), keeping pets, model building, doing needlework or woodwork, pottery, playing
an instrument and dancing. These are indoor hobbies. While hiking, mountaineering, caving, sailing, fishing
and bird-watching are outdoor hobbies.
Unfortunately many Hungarians spend their time at home, but fishing is a very popular hobby in our country
for men and gardening is both for men and women.
I love animals so I have a dog. I love taking him for a walk and we usually play a lot together. Other people
have cats, guinea pigs, hamsters, budgies or goldfish.

 Your last holiday

Prompts for the interlocutor:

 Where can people go on holiday?
 How do you plan your holiday?
 How can you travel?

 Where did you last go on holiday?

People can go on holiday to the seaside, for example Croatia or Greece and go swimming and
sunbathing. They can also go to a lake for example Lake Balaton. It is a very popular place for relaxing in
Hungary. If they want to be active, they can also travel to the mountains and go backpacking.
We can plan the holiday well. If we organise the holiday, we have to book a hotel room, buy tickets,
apply for visa if necessary and plan all the programmes carefully. We pack the bags and suitcases: we put in
light clothes, a swimsuit, sandals, a hat and sunglasses.
We can travel by plane. It is fast and comfortable but often expensive. We can go by car and we can
travel when and where we want to. We can also take a bus but it takes a long time and it is sometimes
uncomfortable.
A lot of tourists come to Hungary to see Budapest: the Castle Hill, Matthias Church, the Fishermen’s
Bastion, the Heroes’ Square and the House of the Parliament. They spend some time at Lake Balaton. Some
of them come to see the Hungarian puszta with its cows and horses. They would like to try typical
Hungarian spicy food.
I like travelling, too. Last year I went to Siófok at Lake Balaton with my family. We spent a week
there. The weather was great and I went swimming every day. In the evenings we went walking in the town.
I liked it very much.

rolls. While my mum is cooking in the kitchen, me and my brother decorate the Christmas tree. When we
are ready, we place the Christmas presents under the tree. They are opened only after we have dinner
together. After that we have a chat, watch TV and have a good time. On the first and second day of
Christmas we either visit our relatives or they come to us.

sprinkle women and girls with perfume or water. They get chocolate or painted eggs, and chocolate bunnies.
A typical Easter Sunday breakfast consist of ham, boiled eggs, yellow cottage cheese, and homw-made

To stay fit we shouldn’t eat fatty food, like ham, bacon and a lot of meat. A lot of fat can lead to heart
problems. We shouldn’t eat food that contains a lot of sugar, like sweets, cakes and soft drinks. A lot of
sugar is also bad for your teeth.
To eat healthily, we should eat more fruit and vegetables. We should drink a lot of water and eat less pasta
or bread.
Drinking alcohol or smoking is also bad for your health. It is difficult for a lot of people to give it up.
I don’t eat fatty food. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables. I don’t smoke and I don’t drink alcohol.
If I feel sick, I go to the doctor at the surgery. I tell my problem and he examines me: he listens to my lungs,
looks at my throat and takes my temperature. He prescribes some medicine and I have to stay at home and
rest. I also have to drink a lot.
If I need medicine, I go to the chemist’s.
If you are unwell, you can go to the hospital. I have never been to hospital./I have been to hospital _____

Prompts for the interlocutor:

1. What special subjects can you learn here?
2. What languages can you study?
3. What is your favourite subject?
I study at the secondary school named after Vay Ádám in Baktalórántháza. About 1000 students study here.
It consists of three types of schools: grammar, technical and vocational. Students come here from primary
school at the age of 15. They can study here until their school-leaving exams. It takes 4 years. We learn
general subjects, like Hungarian literature and grammar, histoty, maths, foreign languages (English,
German, Ukrainian and French), geography, physics, chemistry, biology and others.
But they can also study some special subjects, such as economics, village hospitality, bee-keeping,
gardening and driving tractors.
Our school consists of a lot of buildings. There are many different classrooms in it. There are 6 classrooms
which are equipped with computers. There are few lassrooms where you can learn languages.
In our school there are 2 gyms and 2 sports grounds where we have P.E. lessons. Almost all students have
lunch at the school canteen. There is also a big buffet.
The yard of the school is full of trees and flowers. Students who live far from the school stay at the sudents’
hostel. They can go home only at weekends. As for me I like my school. My favourite subject is

SHOPPING, TYPES OF SHOPS

 Do you like shopping? Why? Why not?
 Do you like window-shopping?
 Have you ever bought anything on the Internet?
 What do you think about buying on the Internet? Do you think it is good and comfortable?

In a supermarket you can get almost everything under one roof. Almost all supermarkets are self-service
shops which are very popular because you can see many different varieties of the available articles and you
make your choice as you please. I prefer shopping in a supermarket, but I know there are some people who
don’t like it. These people have to walk from shop to shop a long time till they can get everything if they
haven’t forgotten half of what they originally wanted. Another advantage of supermarkets is that they have
lower prices than small shops. Sometimes they cut the price of certain goods so that people will come to
them. The only disadvantage of going to a big shop is that there area a lot of customers at weekends and
before double feasts. Everybody is in a hurry, both buyers and shop assistants are nervous and there are
often a lot of irritating remarks. However, people who are in favour of small shops argue that their needs are
much better looked after in a small shop and that the assistants are more polite and attentive when serving
them.
PUBLIC TRANSPORT

These pictures show different types of means of transport. Compare and describe them.

 What are the advantages / disadvantages of travelling by train?
 What do you have to buy if you want to use these vehicles?
 What kind of trains can you travel on in Hungary?
 What do you know about travelling by plane? Have you ever flown?

In big cites there are different vehicles used in public transport: buses, trams, trolley buses, trains and the
underground. If you want to use them you have to buy a ticket or a season ticket. You have to keep your
ticket while travelling as inspectors may come and ask you for it.
In Hungary you can travel by several kinds of trains: express trains, fast and slow passenger trains. Intercity
is also popular because it is fast and cheap.
Nowadays more and more people go to work by bike because it can keep you fit and it is also cheaper. There
are a lot of bike routes in the big cities, so they can travel safe.
If you travel abroad you can travel by plane. It is very comfortable and fast way of travelling but it very
expensive. Before boarding the plane the passengers must check in and they get a boarding card. Then they
go to the departure lounge where they have to wait. Then they go to the right gate and get into the plane.
I have never flown by plane. / I have flown by plane ……………….. I like it.

 What is the weather like in spring?  What is the weather like in winter?
 What happens to trees and flowers in  What do you wear in winter and in
spring? summer?
 What is the weather like in summer?

In Hungary there are four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter.
In spring the weather is usually bright nad sunny, but sometimes cloudy and windy. The snow melts, the
trees begin to grow leaves and the flowers begin to bloom.
In summer it is usually hot. The sun is shining and the temperature is over thirty. Sometimes there are
showers but they don’t last long. Most people take their holidays in summer. They usually go to the seaside
and lie in the sun or swim in the cool water.
In autumn it is often foggy and cloudy. It is quite cold and there is sometimes frost. It often rains and there is
strong wind. The leaves become yellow, brown and red and then they fall. We harvest some fruits in
autumn, such as plums, pears, apples and grapes.
In winter the temperature is usually below zero. It is cold and frosty. It often snows. In winter you must wear
warm clothes: hats, gloves, scarves, thick overcoats and winter boots.
In summer you can wear light dress, T-shirt, shorts, skirts and sandals.

My favourite season is summer because it is warm again after the long, cold winter days. It is usually hot,
dry, bright and sunny and the temperatures are above thirty degrees. Of course there are some showers,
but I don't mind them because they can be really refreshing during the dog days. I also like summer
because I don't have to put on many clothes and the best thing is of course that I don't have to go to
school. In summer I can do many outdoor activities, for example I really like going on outings in
summer, especially near the river Tisza, because sometimes the hot is only bearable if you are near water.

1. Where can you get clothes?

2. What do men usually wear?

5. What do you like wearing?

Some people are very good at choosing the right colour for their clothes. They dress well and look nice in their
new clothes. We can buy ready-made clothes or we can go to the tailor or the dressmaker.

One of our first programmes is to change from pyjmas into the clothes. Men put on a shirt, pants and trousers,
jeans, perhaps a tie, a suit and a jacket. Women put on panties, bras, slips, blouses, a skirt or a dress, jeans or a
suit. We all put on shoes that we have cleanded well. Some prefers boots but others wear light or heavy shoes all
the year round. In winter we wear scarf, gloves, winter boots and an overcoat (or a thick winter coat). In rainy
weather we take an umbrella and /or water-proof raincoat. In summer, we usually wear a swimsuit, slippers,
shorts, a top, sunglasses, a T-shirt etc.

Girls:
In my opinion a woman must always look nice and attractive. What looks nice, however, always depends
on the occasion. At school I like wearing colourful jumper / top and blue jeans, while at a party I prefer
wearing elegant black dress, tights and high heels.

Boys:
I am not really dress-conscious as clothes are not important to me and I am usually casually dressed. At
school I always wear T-shirt and blue jeans. After all it is not the gay coat that makes the gentleman.
JOBS

Compare the pictures. Describe and contrast the jobs. Include the following:
 The most popular jobs in Hungary
 The two large categories of jobs

Most people in the world have to work to earn money. There are lots of professions but the most popular are
lawyer, doctor, teacher, engineer, mechanic, builder, driver, soldier, shop assistant, carpenter and many
others.
Jobs are divided up into two large catergories: blue collar and white collar. Blue collar jobs are generally
manual labour type, such as factory work, building and construction. The white collar jobs are the office
work such as bank clerks, office workers, teachers, computer operators. They are called blue and white
collar because of the colour of the shirt traditionally worn in those jobs. People in Hungary work 40- 42
hours per week, and they are paid monthly.
Nowadays women must go out to work because the family needs the money.
In our family my father/mother wears the trousers.

MONEY MATTERS

These pictures show alternatives of saving money. Discuss the followings:

 Currencies
 Bad habits
 Recycling
 Communication
 Shopping

Prompts for the interlocutor:

1. What are the most common currencies?

2. What is money good for?
3. How can you save money through banks?
4. How can you save money by lessening bad
habits?
5. How can you save money by recycling?
6. How can you save money on
communication?
7. How can you save money by shopping
smartly?
Money is a very important thing in our life. The most known currencies are: dollar, pound, and euro. In Hungary we
use forint.
We have to buy our food and drinks, pay our bills, buy gas for the car, buy medicine, pay for our children’s education,
the rent if we don’t have our own house or flat and overall nearly everything costs money. But we can save some if we
are smart in living our lives.
First of all you can save money by putting away a small amount regularly into the piggy bank, or put a bigger sum into
a savings account in a bank for some profit, or look for safe investments, but these methods take time and patience.
Bad habits cost a lot of money. For example: smoking, drinking, and taking light drugs or even drinking coffee
regularly. By giving up or even lessen these habits you can save a lot of money. One box of cigarette less in a week
will earn you 1000 Forints. Drinking one less coffee per day for a week will earn you the same.
You can also save money by using less electricity, gas or water. Switching off the TV while nobody is around, turning
down the thermostat of the heating system when you are not at home, having a shower instead of a bath will also save
you money.
Making a lot of long phone calls isn’t cheap either. People like to talk to each other and they often forget about the
time, but not your service provider. They will make you pay for every second, so try to keep your calls short and send
text messages instead. The best thing is to communicate via the Internet by using a chat system.
You can also save money by clever recycling. For example use your roof and some cheap plastic barrels to collect
rainwater for your plants or your favourite plant grew bigger and it needs a new BIG pot. 3-4000 forints or you
remember that in the garage somewhere there was an old wooden barrel. Cut it in half, paint it and you have your pot
for free.
Shopping smartly is also a great way to save money. Try to find discounts in supermarkets or in other shops. The
easiest way is to use the Internet to look for the same product for less money. If you know that you use something
regularly or a lot, find the cheapest option and buy in bulk, but don’t forget to check the expiration date!
Lastly, you can save a lot of money, really a lot, if you don’t buy unnecessary things.
EATING OUT

Look at the pictures. They show different types of restaurants. Describe and contrast the pictures. Include
the following:
 The main meal-times
 What your favourite dish is
 Where people can go to eat out
 Self-service restaurants
 Ordinary restaurants
 Typical Hungarian dishes

Prompts for the interlocutor:

1. What are the main meal-times?
2. What do you usually have for
breakfast?
3. What do you usually have for
lunch?
4. What do you usually have for
dinner?
5. What is your favourite dish?
6. Do you often eat out?
7. Where can people go to get
something to eat?
8. What Hungarian dishes do you
know?
Normally I eat 3 times a day. These meals are breakfast, lunch and dinner. For breakfast I usually eat sancwiches,
eggs, ham, toast, cold cuts, bread, cheese, butter and drink tea, milk or juice. For lunch and for dinner I eat some meat
with potatoes, rice or some vegetable dish made from peas, beans or cabbage and fruits.

My favourite dish is pancake. I need eggs, flour, milk and some salt and sugar. I mix the ingredients and then fry the
pencake in a frying pan. You can fill them with jam or cottage cheese.

To eat out means to have a meal in a restaurant. You can go to a restaurant or a self-service restaurant.
People choose the self-service restaurants if they are in a hurry and they want to have a quick meal. They choose the
dish from the list hanging on the wall. Then they pick up a tray, knife, fork and spoon and pick out what they want to
eat from the counter. Then they pay the bill and sit down. The advantages of self-service restaurants are: cheap dishes,
good meals in ten minutes, you don’t have to give a tip. The disadvantages: they are often noisy and crowded.
When you enter a restaurant, you look for an empty table, sit down and ask the waiter for the menu. Then you order
the dishes you want to have. After having your meal, you ask for the bill, pay it and give a tip to the waiter. The
advantages of restaurants are: comfortable, clean and quiet. The disadvantages are: expensive, you have to wait and
you have to give a tip.

Hungarian food is rather spicy because we use a lot of pepper. Our most popular national dishes are fish soup,
chicken soup, stuffed cabbage and goulash.
