My Last Summer Holiday

My last summer holiday was great. We spent 10 pleasant days in Croatia. We went
there at the beginning of July and stayed in an aparment which was close to the seaside. I
think we and our friends were lucky because of the weather. All the time it was sunny and
hot, that’s why we swam a lot and spent much time on the beach and finally we had a good
suntan.

Anyway, we travelled to Croatia by car and we could visit a lot of sightseeings and
historical towns like Split, Trogir and Omis.

I think the most enjoyable trip was a boat trip which was on the third day of our
journey. In the evening we had a fish picnic. It was very delicious.

In fact, people were friendly, kind and helpful.

To tell the truth I could speak English when I ordered some Croatian food in the restaurant.
Fortunately, I could buy some presents for my grandparents and my friends.

Last but not least, we collected some beautiful shells at the seaside.

All in all our holiday was unforgettable. I recommend you this place next year.

1.Holidays

For youngsters who attend school from September to the beginning of

June, the greatest holiday is the summer holiday, which lasts for almost
three months. This is the time for relaxation and recreation, and also have
a lot of fun and entertainment.
Last summer we decided to go to Lake Balaton where the parents of one
of my friends have a site without any building on it. We hired a tent for
four persons and a table with four chairs. We packed everything in the car
from dishes to a small gas-stove and of course our personal belongings,
clothes, toiletries and some food.
The journey took about two hours and it took another two to unpack
everything and set up the tent. It stood in the shade of a large nut-tree so
it was quite pleasant.
We had water but no electricity so we lit a candle at night. It was so
romantic.
We had very nice weather although once there was a sudden shower at
night and water ran inside the tent.
During the daytime, we went to the beach and stayed there until six or
seven. We swam a lot, rowed, and played games in the sand. In the
evenings, we generally walked in the town just looking around.
Once we took a boat-trip to the other side of the lake and visited the old
castle in Szigliget.
The two weeks passed very quickly and we had to return home.
At the end of July, I went to Austria, but it wasn’t so interesting.
I was bored, in spite of the fact that we saw very nice places.

2.Health
The world health really means good health when you feel fine. But it
also possible to speak about poor health, when you feel out of shorts, do
not feel up to the mark.
.A regular way of life is very important to good health. Have your meals at
regular times; devote enough time to recreation, sport in the fresh air and
sunshine.
Many people who feel unwell or nervous are just exhausted,
overworked and need a good rest.
When you are unwell, you see the doctor in his surgery or send for him.
You tell him your trouble and he examines you by sounding your lungs,
listening your heart, taking your blood pressure , feeling your pulse and
taking your temperature. If it is nothing serious, there is nothing much to
worry about, but you may have to take some prescription. He may put
you on diet or put you on the sick list.
To be health you should eat healthy food that is little fat and sugar and
a lot of vegetables and fruit. Do exercise regularly and try to avoid stress.
Unfortunately, many people are overweight in Hungary. People don’t care
about leading a healthy way of life. They eat too much sugar and too
many fatty foods and they don’t do any sports. They don’t ever walk, but
use their cars or public transport. I think the majority of people don’t pay
enough attention to their health, go, and see a doctor only then it’s too
late.
Last January I had bronchitis. I had sore throat, high temperature, I
coughed all day and night, and my nose was running. I also lost my
appetite.
The doctor examined me thoroughly. She told me to strip to the waist
and she sounded my lungs. She looked at my throat and took my blood
samples. She prescribed some antibiotics, antifebrile and vitamins. She
gave me drops in care my nose clogged up and some antiseptic gargle for
my throat. She told me to stay in bed some days, drink a lot of tea, and
eat fruits. It took a week to get over the bronchitis.

When an Englishman asks you about your health, he is probably only

doing so out of politeness. He is certainly not expecting a detailed medical
report, and will be most surprised if you give him one.
3.Place of living

I come from the northern part of Hungary I live in a town called

Dunakeszi. It’s about 20 km from the capital. It is a busy but lively town.
I’m very happy to live here.
Firstly, because it is located in a lovely area nearly the Danube.
Secondly, because the town itself is nice. Life is peaceful. There is no
noise or pollution.
Thirdly, most of my friends live here so I don’t have to travel to see them.
Life is never dull in a town because the latest exhibitions, films, and
plays are only a short car drive away.
There are more civilized conditions in a town:
- streets are better kept
- shops are better supplied
- There is wide choice and shops are within easy reach.
There are variety of schools and places of work and chances of good
education and employment are better.
There are higher living standards, roads are better and there are more
conveniences in flats.
Of course, there are disadvantages of town life too. Especially in big cities:
- buses are crowded, there are constant traffic jams
- in big cities skyscrapers and blocks are built without leaving
space for greenery
- homelessness is another problem in towns
- There’s crowed, noise and pollution too.
- In the city, people lose touch with nature, they go to work in the
morning, and come home dead tired in the evening

4.Free time

Well, honestly, I don’t have much free time because I have to study a lot
for school. I prefer weekends because I can do all kinds of things.
What do you do at the weekend?
I often visit my relatives or I go to the theatre with my parents. At
weekends, I can spend more time with my family. We like playing board
games, going on bicycle tour, visiting the Zoo, having barbecue parties in
our garden.
We like going to the mall, too to have some food and we like window-
shopping.
When the weather is good we like walking in the forests.
Otherwise, I meet my friends and we go to the cinema or just play
computer games.
What else do you do in your spare time?
I enjoy listening to music and watching TV or DVD’s, but not just
anything. I mostly watch natural science programmes.
Like what kinds?
I like channels where I see animals and interesting places.
I also like music channels and I regularly watch Barátok közt, too.
What’s that?
It’s a soap opera, but some of the episodes are about social problems. I
think these are serious themes.
I like reading, too. I try to read something I like at least 20 minutes a
day. Now I’m reading Kálmán Mikszáth’s book, The Umbrella of St. Peter.
Do you do any sports?
Oh, yes of course. I play basketball in the school team and with my
classmates during our breaks. In addition, I have a basketball hoop over
the garage door so I can play with my friend after school, too.

5. Family

Hungarian families are usually quite small. An average family consists of a

mother a father and two children. Different generation usually does not
live together. It is quite rare in Hungary for grandparents, aunts, and
uncles to share the house with the nuclear family.
Pets like dogs, cats, goldfish, and hamsters are often regarded as close
members of the family.
In the last 15 or 25 years have been great changes in family life in
Hungary. For example, more couples now live together and have children
with out getting married.
Among married couples, there has been an increase in divorce and
separation.
That is why there are many one-parent families.
Members of a family see less of each other than they used to. Despite
these changes, most people in Hungary decide to get married and start a
family.

6.Our house
I live in a detached house in Dunakeszi. There are only family houses
around our house.
I like living here because of the peace and quiet.
We have a small garden, which is always full of flowers and there are
some trees too. The garden is surrounded by a hedge.
When you enter the house, there is a hall that leads to the other
rooms.
There is a light living room with the two-seater sofas and four
armchairs with a coffee table. The walls are white, but to make the room
friendlier, we have hung some paintings on the walls.
In the corner, there is a TV stand and shelves for the DVD player and a
music center.
Next to this room, there is a dining room with a well-equipped kitchen.
My room is covered with a dark blue wall-to wall carpet. There is a
double bed with two bedside tables. In the corner there are some potted
plants. There are also colourful curtains on the windows, and there is a
chandelier hanging from the ceiling, too.
I like our house, because it is very cosy and there is enough room to live
comfortably.

7. Education

My educational history is an ordinary story.

As my mother didn’t go out to work I didn’t go to crèche. I went to
nursery school, which I liked very much because I could play with a lot
of children and there was lots of interesting playground equipment.
At the age of six, I started primary school.
My school is a big old building in the middle of a block of flat. The
classrooms are big with huge windows. Although the furniture is not so
modern. There is a big yard with a lot of trees and benches to sit on.
There are a number of things I really like about my school, but on the
other hand, there are certain things that I can’t say I’m particularly
happy about.
First, let’s look at the strong points: above all, it’s not far from
where I live;
Secondly, it has got some extremely good teachers;
Thirdly; there are specialised PE classes, then there is a very good
drama society, and last but not least, there are very nice people in my
class.
I like my biology teacher very much. She explains everything clearly
and has a good sense of humour. We all enjoy biology classes.
I get on well with most of my classmates. I have several good friends and
we often meet outside school too. We often do sport together, go to the
cinema, and have lots of fun on school trips.
As for the weak points: unfortunately, my school isn’t very well
equipped, (for example there aren’t enough computers).another problem
is that teachers are far too strict.
All things considered I don’t think this school was a bad choice.
If I could change The Hungarian school system, I would like to have
smaller classes, with twenty pupils at the most.
I wouldn’t make pupils learn so many details about each subject. I would
let them concentrate more on what they like.

8. Eating out
Eating out is one of my favourite passtimes, though since prices are high I
can’t always afford it. But once a month on a Saturday we go to a fast
food restaurant with my family.
There is an endless argument about fast food restaurants. Some people
like them, others don’t. Students, sales representatives, a huge number of
tourists, office workers, and even well-to-do businessmen prefer them.
Me, too.
Why? The answer is quite simple: because they are really fast and the
dishes are delicious. My favourite food is chips with ketchup and chicken
nuggets. I drink orange juice.
There are several types of fast food restaurants, but the original idea
comes from the States: to dine well, cheap and fast. That’s how it works
in the States.
Unfortunately, it works a bit worse in our country.
If you go to a MacDonald’s, you almost pay as much as for a simple dish-
a hamburger, a coke, an ice-cream-as you would pay for a pleasant dinner
in an elegant place. So my parents don’t prefer eating
out.

9. Daily routine

On weekdays, I usually get up at a quarter to seven or a bit later.

Because both of my parents are out to work then, I always set my radio-
alarm so that I won’t oversleep.
After waking up it is about five or ten minutes until I am wide awake,
and then I jump out of bed. I am always in hurry. I rush to the bathroom,
quickly wash, clean my teeth, comb my hair, put on some jewellery, and
get dressed. If I have an extra two or three minutes, I take a shower.
Before going to work, my mum prepares my breakfast and makes some
sandwiches for me for school. I leave the flat at about half past 7 and I
am at school at fifteen minutes before eight. I quickly look through my
homework if I have forgotten some of them. I very rarely copy my
classmates’ homework, but they copy mine.
School is usually over at two or even later. Then we get to the school
canteen to have lunch.
Twice a week I have optional lessons in the afternoon, and also two
theatrical workshops, so when I get home it is quite late.
On arriving home, I relax a bit, listen to some music, switch on the TV, or
simply talk to my parents.
Then I retire into my room and start to study which lasts till eight or nine,
it depends.
Then we have dinner. I like talking to my parents so I take parts in this
family gathering.
I rarely watch TV at night but if I do, I only watch the series. I prefer
reading before falling asleep.

10. Sports

We have three gym lessons a week at school but I think there should be
more-one everyday at least. Doing physical exercises is extremely
important for children.
After sitting at a desk for five or six hours in the morning, and four or five
in the afternoon at home doing the homework, I think we should deserve
an hour when we could play whatever we feel like. But it isn’t so.
The P.E. lessons have got their own routine. We do some warming-up
exercises including running five hundred meters. Then in the second half
of the lesson, we play games, more often basketball, or volleyball.
When the weather is nice we play outdoor games. I enjoy it much more.
I have tried several kinds of sports in my life. When I was eight, I
started to swim. I wasn’t very talented, but I was fairly good at
breaststroke and freestyle. Once I came second in the school
championship and I was very proud of my result.
When I was twelve, I began to grow very quickly and my gym teacher got
me to play volleyball. I went to the first training and I have been playing it
since that time. I simply love it. I play in the school team and we win the
town championship every year.
There are three trainings a week, but we often come together at the
weekends and play just for fun.
I think doing sport is the best free time activity.

11. Reading

I like reading books and I read a lot.

I read long, short, adventure or funny stories. I also like novels and books
on History and science-fictions. I find them exciting and interesting. You
can learn lots about any kind of topic.
I like funny stories, because they make me happy and it is a good thing. I
don’t like reading crime stories or thrillers.
These kinds of novels are frightening.
I often read newspapers because I want to be up-to-date and I want to
what happens in the world.
Nowadays you can find anything on the Internet. You can always find
there the latest news, it is free and it needn’t any real paper.
Recently almost everybody prefers TV, cinema or video to books.
It is a good entertainment. People often go to the cinema with their
friends to watch the latest movies, but most of the films are published in
DVD, so you can watch it cheaper at home.
I like watching good films, too but I am not a coach potato. I think it is
much better reading a book than watching TV.

I’m sorry, I can’t remember its number now.

I think it’s important to be healthy. I play sport after school every day and
I go swimming at weekends. I have a good diet- I don’t eat a lot of sweets

week at school but I think there should be more- one every day at least.
Doing physical exercise is extremely important for children so we often
come together at the weekends and play just for fun.
I think you should play sport every day too, and you can do yoga for
example at the weekends. You should have a good diet, so you shouldn’t
eat a lot of sweets.

- OK. See you later! Bye!
