benchmark hp:
creating PLC best practices
HP is demonstrating how PLC can transform product design and deployment. Using
proven best practices to reduce risk and using best-of-breed partners to speed
implementation, HP is creating a single management process spanning the entire
product lifecycle.
HP’s PLC program began with extensive definition of requirements and business case
analyses, followed by creation of a pan-HP PLC program office. The office comprises
IT infrastructure, consulting, and information-management teams, in collaboration with
partner ISVs and systems integrators.
benchmark hp: CMII-compliant processes
In a key best practice emerging from its PLC initiative, HP analyzed the various business
processes used throughout the product chain and then developed a common CMII-
compliant process. The first such application of CMII in a PLC deployment, the initiative
accomplished the following:
• captured and then reconciled disparate processes across many organizations
and replaced them with a single common business process
• ensured the new common business process was CMII compliant
• addressed management-of-change issues associated with the new way of working
• implemented the CMII process in the enterprise PDM system and deployed
it across HP Imaging and Printing divisions worldwide
benchmark hp: PLC user simulation
To verify and demonstrate the tangible benefits of PLC transformation before company-
wide rollout, HP created a PLC Conference Room Pilot for a select user community. The
simulation, housed in a single room, re-created HP’s product design and development
chain, with workstations representing operations worldwide.
Initially, some 80 business team members used the Conference Room Pilot to test the PLC
system deployment on their real-world tasks and operations. Through the trial, the team
identified the most effective business processes and their learnings were incorporated in
the global rollout to both internal users and external partners.
