Can is followed by the simple form of the verb.
Can does not change form with the subject.
Can goes before the subject in questions.
Can or can’t complete the sort answers.
Can’t is the contraction of cannot (can + not).
Past meaning of the modal auxiliary could: I couldn’t call you yesterday.
Notice the meaning of could.
I couldn’t go swimming yesterday.
I can go swimming today.
Could acts like the other modal auxiliaries: can, will, may, might, shall, should,
must, would. It comes before the subject in questions. It doesn’t change form
according to the subject. It completes short answers.
There is no contraction for could. Couldn’t is the contraction for could + not.
Polite request meaning of modal auxiliary could: could you lend me a dollar?
