FCCLA Lesson Plan: Tracking Food Choices

Topic: Making Healthy Choices

Grade Level: 10-12

Timeframe: 6 Days

Learning Objectives:
Students will become more aware of the current food choices they are making in order to make better
selections or recognize eating patterns.

National FCS Standards:


9.3 Evaluate nutrition principles, food plans, preparation techniques and specialized dietary plans.
9.3.2 Analyze nutritional data.
9.3.4 Assess the influence of cultural, socioeconomic and psychological factors on food and
nutrition and behavior.
9.3.6 Critique the selection of foods to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Materials Needed:
Food log (attached)
Website for calorie counts (ex: https://www.calorieking.com/ )

Instructional Strategies:
Students will record all food/drink choices on a provided food log chart for five days including weekend
days to track food choice intake.

Activity 1: Food Log Assignment
Activity 1 Timeframe: 5 days (including weekend)
Activity 1 Materials Needed:
Food log of daily choices
Directions:
Record all food/drink on provided food log. It is best if each item is recorded on a separate line of the
chart for calculating calories.

Activity 2: Assess Food Logs


Activity 2 Timeframe: One class period or daily as choices are recorded
Activity 2 Materials:
Food log and highlighters
Website for calorie information (recommended – https://www.calorieking.com
Directions:
Highlight food/drink by reason for choice. Example: breakfast, lunch, snack, dinner
Record calorie counts for each food/drink
Identify types of food/drink choice by processed or fresh

Assessment:

Students will record observations of their patterns in a journal entry.

Possible group summative of how students’ choices reflected time of day or a particular event (ex: Did
week day choices vary from weekend choices?)

Having students see all their food/drink choices in writing can help them determine if they are making
nutritious selections or if improvement is needed for a healthier life.
