ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Simply put, 5G is the fifth generation in mobile networks. It enables connections between
machines, objects and devices that are faster and more powerful than previous networks. For
example, with 5G, latency (response times) are dramatically reduced.
“When I say something to you, if you respond back immediately, that's low latency. If I say
something and it takes a long time for your response to come back, that's a higher latency,”
Beasley explains.
5G also offers higher capacities in terms of bandwidth, which is the maximum rate of data that
can be transferred through a specific path (or connection). The technology allows us to
communicate more information or data at once, and in a quicker amount of time.
To streamline the entire process of production, transportation and sale of food products, the
procedures will need to be connected through a fully functional 5G-enabled system. This starts
with 5G network capabilities being used in sensors that monitor things like oxygen levels and
chemicals in water sources where production begins.
Manufacturing facilities will need 5G networks for use on conveyor systems and other machines,
and food containers will need sensors much like those found on medication-containing vessels in
the pharmaceutical industry.
The food industry is already using a myriad of technological components to make, transport and
sell food. Technological innovations like 5G and advanced Internet of Things (IoT) sensors are
the next step toward revolutionizing the way food is created, delivered and purchased.
All levels of the food supply chain are already using ERP system software, GPS and other
technologies to accurately track, send and analyze product data in real time.
Tracking food from farm all the way to the point of sale enables faster and more robust data
capabilities that lead to improved efficiency and communications. 5G will reduce lag times,
inaccuracies in product location due to slow data reporting and even product-loss due to mass
recalls.
Beasley explains that farmers can use 5G-enabled IoT sensors that identify sections, aisles or
rows rather than the entire farm. In the case of a recall, these sensors can help determine exactly
which products are bad, eliminating the need to recall an excessive amount of merchandise.
Beasley also says that 5G will enable efficient, immediate and automated tracking of every facet
of the food journey, with little to no need for human interaction. He says 5G-enabled IoT devices
and sensors on products can send real-time information about where products are, without
workers having to scan barcodes, use RFID readers (radio frequency identification) or handle the
food.
“You can see histories of everything that gets touched along the way, without the need for
human scanning with barcodes or RFID readers. As products are passing through various
transportation points in the supply chain, IoT sensors can record the entire history of the
journey,” Beasley says.
ENHANCED SAFETY:
Factors such as FDA regulations and consumer wellbeing make safety a huge concern for anyone
in the food industry. Thanks to a range of data collection, scanning, analyzing and
communicating capabilities, 5G can drastically improve safety protocols throughout the food
industry supply chain. This new network will enable more timely and accurate pinpointing of
food conditions.
Beasley says, “5G-enabled IoT devices can go with the food products and report their condition,
temperature, safety, humidity level and other related factors in real-time.”
In addition to using new, high-speed technology to accurately monitor temperature and condition
issues, food industry professionals can also utilize 5G to trace where a product came from in
order to ensure FDA regulations have been adhered to throughout a product’s journey.
Emerging technology aims to help the food industry operate more efficiently and effectively than
ever before. From streamlined supply chains to better safety practices, the benefits from 5G
networks could drive the food industry forward at a rapid pace.
Fast-food chain McDonald's is reportedly planning to launch a new "5G" smart product here and
the details will be revealed on April 15, the media reported. The company has shared various
teasers and promotional images of the same. However, it is currently unknown what exactly the
smart product is and how the newer and faster bandwidth ties in with it, reports Gizmo China.
It is assumed that the new product will have a display surrounded by thin bezels. The smart
device will even feature a wide-angle lens, which will support facial recognition as well. The
device will also have speakers and will support 5G networking.
Currently, it is unclear if this is a collaboration between McDonald's and a tech industry brand or
the main focus of the launch is some improvement of the fast-food chain itself.
To further create a buzz, the fast-food chain's We Chat app has opened a new "5G" gift
certificate that includes three kinds of coupons on the basis of discounts. These coupons can only
be redeemed on April 15 and April 16 through applets, restaurant buffet ordering machines, and
restaurant counter scan codes.
VERTICAL INTEGRATION:-
Vertical integration is extremely useful in helping companies increase profits and helping them
to improve their efficiency by decreasing costs such as transportation expenses and production
time because time is a very valuable resource in industry.
BENEFITS:
Vertical integration can emphatically affect buyers trust. The food industry is interestingly
situated to profit by vertical integration on the grounds that the safety and quality of each fixing,
regardless of how little, is basic to the final product's security and quality.
FOOD SAFETY: Food safety is completely basic in the food industry. Vertically integrated
organizations have a couple of key favorable circumstances here, one being that they cooperate
on a long-term basis. A nearby working relationship makes a progressively steady condition
rather than routinely switching suppliers. Vertically integrated organizations additionally have
integral food safety programs, improving the correspondence and the capacity to fulfill
expanding food safety standards.
TRACEABILITY: Traceability comes down to frameworks and communication. At the point
when an organization is vertically integrated, they can share data at a more profound level.
Together with their sister organizations, they can construct frameworks where they interface
imperative data between the organizations. This can improve traceability, both in the detail of the
follow, just as in the time it takes to lead the follow.
INNOVATION AND COLLABORATION: Innovation and collaboration is possibly the most
significant advantage of vertical integration. A vertically integrated organization can work
together and inventively develop with their sister-associations at a more profound level than a
non-vertically coordinated group of organizations. This results in progressively flexible and
customized arrangements that other organizations can't give.
QUALITY: Quality goes hand-in-hand with innovation. New advancements and strategies can
improve the nature of the items. A vertically integrated organization can share what might be
considered "exchange secrets" with their sister-organizations. The capacity to gain knowledge
directly from one another help with improving the general quality.
RELIABLE SUPPLY: A vertically integrated group of organizations offer an increasingly
predictable and reliable supply of products. This is because of the solid association between the
organizations that gives the need of supply to the sister-organizations.
EXAMPLE:
McDONALD’S
If we go through the fast food industry, McDonald’s is a fine example of how vertical
integration can keep costs down and profits up. It is known as “The King of Vertical
Integration”. They grow their own beef for their hamburger, process their own meat, they own
agricultural lands where they grow their own potatoes for their French fries, make their own
flavors and blend mixes in factories that they can transport and distribute to all their stores by
McDonald’s trucks. By owning both, the ingredients as well as transportation facilities, it makes
easier to get their product to their stores on lower cost. As further proof of vertical integration
strategy, McDonalds also owns the land where their stores are situated on, so they do not have to
deal with leases and landlords. Utilization of vertical integration makes McDonald’s one of the
cheapest fast food chains worldwide.
HORIZONTAL INTEGRATION:-
The merger of two organizations at comparative levels in the production supply chain is known
as horizontal integration. The transaction permits organizations to extend their market share and
cut expenses with cooperative energies.
When implemented correctly, horizontal integration can expand the market share and intensity of
two organizations. The organizations can consolidate cooperative energies, product offerings,
and enter new markets. Horizontal integration also decreases the degree of rivalry in the market
while boosting the income of the members who in any case might not have won in a fierce
market condition freely. Through coordination, the gatherings included can share institutional
information while reducing costs.
TRACEABILITY:
Food companies executed traceability since they saw that the consumers required transparency
and validity. Blockchain's permanence helped them to demonstrate that the data the different
supply chain organizations give is uncorrupted
Progressively exact forecast can be made to manage inventory, while it likewise tracks
items from farm to the customer with expanded straightforwardness.
Food processing is the sector where a variety of option is offered for all flavors, species
as well as ingredients.
Recently it is seen that Coco-Cola, one of the biggest soft drink company introduced an
AI-empowered innovation in their plant. With the assistance of this AI innovation, the
customer can modify their soft drink
This AI innovation is essentially a self-administration machine which permits the client
to make an assortment of modified drink by including various sorts of flavors in the base
drink. In the coming years, it will also become possible to come up with new products as
well as flavor
The workers manually sort large amounts of food by size and shape for a clean packaging
process.
AI has contributed in food industry in many ways .It includes sorting of foods, maintain
top-notch health and safety compliance, developing new products and bolstering the
supply chain.
Artificial intelligence application can likewise sort various kinds of vegetables by their
taste, shading, scent, and nourishment plans. Also, it tends to be utilized for quality
control to satisfy the developing quality worries of shoppers. The outcome is
accomplished utilizing center sensor advancements and cameras that can perceive
material dependent on shading, shape, and organic attributes.
,
KFC has launched its first artificial intelligence empowered store in the Chinese capital city and
plans to additionally extend its design of smart restaurants, making increasingly imaginative and
fascinating eating encounters for customers.
With the collaboration of Baidu Inc., China's biggest web index, KFC began its first smart
restaurant in the Financial Street zone in Beijing.
At the store, clients can take pictures with a machine, which will, recognize the diner's face, age,
state of mind and different highlights, at that point help to prescribe appropriate food and set
meals and complete the requesting procedure.
"In the event that the buyer visits the store again and snaps a photo with the machine, it will have
the option to perceive their face and show the past buy history, recall the client's dining habits,
and help to put in a request quicker.
In April, KFC, an offshoot of Yum China Holdings Inc., began its first Chinese smart restaurant
in Shanghai. The outlet is equipped with intelligent robot requesting, appearing the utilization of
computerized reasoning in chain restaurants, state-run China Daily announced.
Zhao Li, head supervisor of Beijing KFC, said smart restaurant are about the cool equipment,
yet increasingly about giving comfort to buyers.
"Our advancements utilize the forefront advances and they will assist with pulling in increasingly
youthful buyers who incline toward fashionable new things. The digitalization of the restaurant
will likewise assist with offering quicker and simpler types of assistance,"
It also attracted many consumers to the restaurant to explore fresher and more interesting digital
dining experiences.
AUGMENTED REALITY
Augmented reality and Virtual reality have changed or we can say, reshaped the universe of E-
Commerce, social insurance and instruction. Presently, this innovation is going towards the food
industry. Some stats and facts related to AR and VR.
STATS AND FACTS
The present value of the AR market stands at$3.5billion.
70 percent of the customers believe AR can bring those benefits.
14 million AR and VR devices are expected to be sold in 2019.
There are more than171 M VR users worldwide.
Domino’s has introduced what it claims is the world’s first augmented reality (AR) pizza ordering
offering.
The New Pizza Chef is accessible through the QSR's portable application and takes advantage of
both Apple's ARKit and Google's ARCore AR improvement systems so as to comprehend the
space around a client. Clients can make their own pizza mix utilizing a determination of fixings
and bases, breathing life into the nourishment before them for all intents and purposes. There are
additionally a few amazement and joy components remembered for the AR.
Just as making pizzas, AR connects to the full menu, most recent arrangements and request
following utilizing existing GPS Driver Tracker innovation.
Domino’s group chief digital and technology officer, Michael Gillespie, said.
“Advancements, for example, the new Pizza Chef with increased the reality are significant as
they help us to keep on driving on the web deals. Also, with the up to 2 million things sold online
in multi week, we know it's significant for us to consistently be making the internet requesting
experience progressively consistent, fulfilling and important for our customers."
Logistics:
With the help of RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) transmitters and GPS systems, the
distribution chain can be effectually monitored all along the whole storage and shipping course at
the sales points or stores. This also enables companies to be acquainted with the preferences of
customers, better reply to market requirements and decrease surpluses. The advanced Radio
Frequency Identification (RFID) tracking provides supreme visibility into the food supply chain
helps automate delivery and shipping processes and effectively monitors and controls
temperature. It also enables shippers to track a location of the product with GPS.
Supply Chain Transparency:
Employing traceability and transparency throughout the global supply chain will aid food
agencies to succeed in business by acquiring customer loyalty and trust. Even though
international and domestic regulations can amplify the intricacy of the global food supply chain,
IoT technology can make it convenient for both companies and consumers to track products.
Further, transparency incorporates some added benefits for companies including improved
inventory management, cost savings, and faster lead times. Businesses can obtain such benefits
by identifying and solving incompetence in the supply chain, exceeding and meeting food safety
regulations, and offering transparency to customers.
Sensors can significantly help to perk up quality control, products tracking, workers’ activities,
and taking advantage of real-time analysis for production. Sensors persistently inspect the color
and specks throughout flour production, which helps to immediately rectify any inaccuracy.
Moreover, sensors gauge the moisture content along with protein or cash content and allow real-
time optimization of the production procedure.
MACHINE LEARNING IN FAST FOOD INDUSTRY
Machine learning enables a computer system to make predictions or take some decisions using
historical data without being explicitly programmed. Machine learning uses a massive amount of
structured and semi-structured data so that a machine learning model can generate accurate result
or give predictions based on that data.
California-based Miso Robotics is a startup focused on AI-driven robotic solutions for the
kitchen environment. The company’s flagship AI kitchen assistant “Flippy” combines 3D,
thermal, and regular vision to assist with grilling, frying, prepping, and plating.
In this example, Machine Learning was used to teach the robot:
For the recognition process, we explain below how colors and shapes are parameters used to
recognize an object from another one. Each time, the algorithm modifies internal parameters or
parts of its structure based on the initial fallacies (burnt or not cooked steak) and tries again. In
the end, the algorithm will understand a brown steak is a cooked steak.
Then during the supervised learning, a human assesses accuracy by looking at the steak.
For each new steak, the algorithms modify the impact of each parameter based on the initial
fallacies and try again. The more data the robot processes, the more it learns, and the better the
steaks are cooked.
Machine Learning has many applications in restaurants from helping cooks in the kitchens to
forecasting future sales which in turn helps work out the requirement for labor and inventory
management.
Ultimately it can help restaurants run more efficiently, for example, by helping to reduce the 600
million tons of food wasted by restaurants globally and allowing restaurateurs to focus on where
they can add the most value.
McDonald’s restaurant in Miami, powered by Dynamic Yield, those displays have taken on
new dexterity. Algorithms crunch data as diverse as the weather, time of day, local traffic,
nearby events, and of course historical sales data, both at that specific franchise and around the
world. In the new McDonald’s machine-learning paradigm, significant display real estate goes
toward showing customers what other items have been popular at that location, and prompting
them with potential up sells.
