OBJECTIVE:

The main objective of the project is to find the standard of living of the labour class people,
their lifestyle, and source of entertainment for them, role of education in their life and how
much it is important for them. Are they still biased over educating their male child over
female child and how much education they feel is sufficient?

Methods:

There will be field research in the making of this project. Particularly people belonging to
labour class were interviewed and there take on the given topic is the basis of this research
work.

Observations:

 Case 1:
In this a boy approximately of the age group of 16-17 has been interviewed. He is a
helping hand to his father on a road side stall.

1. Ques. How much educated you are?

Ans. I have studied till class 3 or 4 in a primary school in my village.
2. Ques. Why you left school so early?
Ans. I was never interested in studying and then I had to help my father in
his work.
3. Ques. If given a chance would you like to pursue for studies again?
Ans. No, I am the bread earner of my family, I have to support them.
4. Ques. Are you satisfied with your work?
Ans. No, I am not I wish I could study more and would get some better job.
5. Ques. What according to you is your future?
SOCIOLOGY Page |3

Ans. I am not sure about my future, but surely I want my younger brother
and sister to study well and complete their graduation so that they can get
good and decent jobs.
6. Ques. Do you also favour of your younger sister going to school?
Ans. Yes of course, she is also a child like my brother and both are equal for
me I would give both of them equal opportunity in life.

 Case 2:
This is a case of a vehicle driver. Who is working in my house since 23 years down
the line for a better life and his family is staying in village and he used to up-down to
village at the gap of 2-3 days.
1. Ques. Why are you working here?
Ans. I don’t see any future in village and so far as job opportunity there is
no good job opportunity which can do any betterment for my family.
2. Ques. What are your educational qualifications?
Ans. I have done my 10+2 from a school near my village.
3. Ques. Why have not you pursued further education and why are you in this
profession?
Ans. I was married when I was in my 10 th class then somehow I completed
my 12th till then I was over burden with family responsibilities so I have to
start earning. I didn’t get any job so I started driving.
4. Ques. How many children do you have, what about their studies, what future
have you planned for them?
Ans. I have a son and a daughter. They are studying in school in town near
my village. I haven’t planned anything special for them just to give them
better education and it’s their life and they have to plan for their future. I can
just provide them with resources and guiding’s rest they have to do on their
own.
5. Ques. Have you ever discriminated between your male children over female?
Ans. NO, never for me both of them are equal.

 Case 3
This is a case of my house maid. She has 1 son and 2 daughters.
SOCIOLOGY Page |4

1. Ques. From what age are you working in houses?

Ans. I don’t remember but I think I was 12 when I started working in other’s
house
2. Ques. How much educated you are?
Ans. I never went to school, I was not allowed at my time.
3. Ques. Where you ever interested in going to school or in studies?
Ans. I don’t know, as i never went to school so I am not aware what school
is or what are the merits or demerits of going to school. I think it’s the
business of upper class people who have money, for people like me it is
something which we can’t afford.
4. Ques. Do you send your children to school?
Ans. Yes, my son has completed his 10 th and at present he is working in a
mobile repairing shop. For girls I don’t think there is any need to send them to
school as at last there will be no use of education for them. After all they just
have to look after their family and husband when they get married.

Experience from the Field

At the first instance I was very much confused about how to do the research work, then I
made my preference about the people to whom I should talk, after that I approached people
according to my preference order and started asking them the questions which I have framed
beforehand. People were very cooperative; it was fun talking to them. I was not expecting
such a good interaction. I was very much impressed with the driver and his children, who
achieved this much in the minimum resource available to them. I wish they achieve their
respective goals in their life. The boy at road side stall was equally good with a modern
thinking and with an attitude which we much needed in the society. It is very much
appreciable that the person doesn’t have any future plan for himself but still he thinks a lot
for his children. I would not appreciate the thinking of my house maid who is still follows the
old thinking and is now also against educating girl child whatever the reason may be.

Overall the experience of the field was good and encouraging for further researches.

Conclusion:

As with the changing time and the need of the society people need to change and change their
way of thinking. It is impossible to survive in this contemporary society with a rigid thinking,
what I observed with my research work is people who have even a little bit of schooling and
exposer to education knows the importance of education and educating their children
irrespective of whatever class they belong to. I feel this class needs awareness programs and
proper counseling towards the importance of education as education is the back bone of any
developing country and this class constitute the maximum population of our country.
Government should make education institution favorable to the persons belonging to lower
class economically. We should provide them opportunity for betterment of their life.
Government should make schemes that would be helpful to these people. There should be
programs for the awareness of female education, gender equality.
