Abstract
Okhaldhunga is one of the 77 districts of Nepal. This small home town is also
where ‘youth poet’ Siddhicharan Shrestha was born. Shrestha brought the district
into light through his poem Mero Pyaro Okhaldhunga.  Pradip Kumar Rai, known
in the literary world as Byakul Maila is also from Okhaldhunga. Maila is known
for penning the national anthem of Nepal. The place draws its name from Okhal
which translates to grinding stone. There is one still laying at the district
headquarters. There is a statue made of stone. Okhaldhunga also consists of many
forts that have played important role in the history of Nepal, for which the place is
known as ‘district of martyrs’. Okhaldhunga is a scenic place full with snow-
capped mountains and sparkling springs in plain sights. . Okhaldhunga District is
situated in the height of 359 meters to 3330 meters from sea level and covers 1074
square kilo meters. Total population of Okhaldhunga district is 147,984 according
to census 2068 B.S. (2011 A.D.). Main profession of the residents in Okhaldhunga
district is agriculture. Its agricultural land is 23725 hectare.

Jyamire, Okhaldhunga is a market in Siddhicharan Municipality in Okhaldhunga

District in the Sagarmatha Zone of mid-eastern Nepal. This village center was
merged to the Municipality in May 2014. Jyamire is one of the Village development
committees of Okhaldhunga among 56. People of various castes reside in Jyamire
including Newar, Brahmin, Chhetri, Magar, Tamang, Sudra and other. Jyamire is
one of the developing village development committees. There is facilities of
hospital, communication, transportation and so on. Although all the facilities are not
perfectly available, local people do not find great difficulty to sustain their life.

Livelihood means the set of activities performed to live for given life span
involving securing safe water, food, fodder, medicine, shelter, clothing, and the
capacity to acquire above necessities working either individually or group by using
endowments for the self or for household. In Nepal 80 percent of Nepalese people
are dependent in agriculture though they engage in different job and business
lately. 65% people are engage in agriculture and remaining 35% in business and
service.

Livelihood of the Okhaldhunga Siddhicharan-9, Jyamire is mainly based on

agriculture and service. Their main economic activity is agriculture. As there is
saying “UNITY IN DIVERSITY” we came to know that there is unity in diversity.
During the survey of forty houses different people following different cultures caste
language, we got chances to interact with them. Mostly there is high number of
people of Hinduism. We can find varieties of caste culture language in Jyamire
village. Despite of being different caste, culture, they live together forming a
community.

The main Problem of the Jyamire is scarcity of water. They have only few taps for
water.Other problem is condition of road. There is just muddy and bumpy road in
Jyamire. In monsoon season, road will be in worse condition.
Unemployment/Underemployed is another problem. In survey of 50 people, we find
that 10 people are unemployment while many of them work in agriculture despite of
their capacity in other field. People practice subsistence economy. The crops that
they produce are only enough for them and their family. They are not able to
produce crops for selling purpose.

Jyamire is a beautiful place surrounded by hills. This place is rich in natural

resources. Most of the people are engaged in agriculture. Some people are in service
sector. The number of people going abroad or foreign country for employment is
very less, which is good point. People sustain their life by doing things that can be
done by them within the village. Our respondents said that they were very proud
that the youths are not going abroad and they are working in their own village.

It can be concluded that people of Jyamire village believe in the saying “unity in
diversity”. Although people of diverse culture, caste, tradition, norms and values
reside in the village, there is no conflict regarding these topics. They are residing
harmoniously by helping and sharing happiness and sorrows with each other.
However, there are some social problems like alcoholism and discrimination which
should be eradicated in order to make this village example of a perfect village.
