OnGauge Torque-Reduction Sealed-Bearing Roller Reamer
The OnGauge reamer reduces the downhole torque that is typical with
fixed-blade stabilizers, allowing for a more stable drilling environment. Fishing
neck
Three rotating cutter blocks that act as a bearing for the drillstring diameter
provide a reduced torque stabilization point that minimizes the effects
of downhole torque. Reduced downhole torque allows extended runs in
complex extended-reach drilling (ERD) geometries and improves weight
transfer to the bit to increase ROP and extend drillbit and MLWD life.

The OnGauge roller reamer also provides mechanical hole conditioning

through microdoglegs, wellbore spiraling, and formation ledging. The
reamer acquires less wear on its cutters in abrasive formations that
cause excessive stabilizer blade wear on traditional stabilizers. During
backreaming operations, the bidirectional cutter blocks allow hole
conditioning through tight hole conditions. The reamed hole section
results in the removal of tight sections and ledges, significantly reducing
trip times and improving subsequent trips with drilling or casing strings.

Drilling Impact Tools
AP Impact Advanced Performance Impact System
The complex and expensive drilling assemblies used in today’s
technologically advanced drilling operations represent a greater
investment than ever before. As a result, lost-in-hole (LIH) incidents can
cost operators hundreds of thousands of dollars related to lost equipment,
its recovery, plugging back, and drilling around a LIH drillstring.

The Schlumberger AP Impact system can help protect operators from

these costly setbacks by greatly reducing the risk of losing downhole
drilling equipment, such as rotary steerable, MWD, and LWD systems.

The AP Impact system includes

■■Hydra-Jar AP tool
■■ Accelerator AP tool
■■ Runner program.

Applications
■■ Differential sticking, hole sloughing, or other potential
stuck-in-hole problems
■■ Casing swaging operations requiring impact for successful completion
■■ Fishing operations requiring significant down-hitting impact or
alternating up-and-down jarring force
■■ When using downhole tools such as directional, MWD,
and LWD equipment

Runner program
The Runner drillstring analysis program performs prerun analysis
of buckle stresses as well as torque and drag on the workstring
during the wellbore departure operation. Once the job has begun, the
Runner program provides real-time analysis of downhole parameters
encountered for comparison with modeled parameters. See page 15 in
this catalog for more information.

Hydra-Jar AP jar
The Hydra-Jar AP double-acting hydraulic drilling jar allows the driller
to control the direction, intensity, and frequency of downhole impacts.
Because the system works without applied torque, the orientation of
directional-drilling tools is maintained throughout the jarring operation.
The tool also offers the driller an important option: to jar up or down with
a force ranging from a light blow to an extraheavy impact. See page 16 in
this catalog for more information.

Accelerator AP tool
The Accelerator AP impact tool complements the Hydra-Jar AP jar’s
capability by providing additional stretch in the drillstring. This enables
answering challenges such as hole drag or if the drillstring is not heavy
or long enough. By increasing the velocity of the mass applied to the jar,
the Accelerator AP tool ensures optimal impact force from the jar. See
page 18 in this catalog for more information.

13 Schlumberger Drilling Impact Tools

Runner Drillstring Analysis Program
The Runner program optimizes placement of the drilling jar and jar
accelerator to provide the maximum potential of the tools should they be
needed to free stuck pipe during differential sticking pipe risk situations.

In the execution phase, the Runner program analyzes and models the
drillstring assembly and BHA configuration for optimal jar placement.
The program considers many factors, including well path, inclinations,
DLS, hole geometry, mud type and weights, system friction, contact
forces, torque and drag, and string pressure losses. Once the job has
begun, the Runner program provides real-time analysis of downhole
parameters encountered for comparison with modeled parameters.

Predator Cutter Block
Rhino XC and Rhino XS reamers can be equipped with Predator cutter
blocks, which employ the latest technological advances.

Faster ROP and fewer trips

Predator cutter blocks use ONYX PDC cutters, which are more thermally
stable as well as more wear- and impact-resistant than conventional
PDC cutters. Extensive testing and analysis is used to optimize every
step in the manufacture of these cutters, resulting in improved
performance over a wide range of applications—from hard, highly
abrasive to interbedded, difficult-to-drill formations. The cutters remain
sharp longer, translating to more footage drilled at maximum ROP and
substantially reduced drilling costs. Moreover, the single-set cutter
placement means that each cutter is in a unique location on the cutting
profile, resulting in a more stable and durable reamer cutting structure.

Optimized design
The advanced cutting structure is optimized for maximum ROP with
minimum vibration using IDEAS* drillbit design platform. This brings
application-specific cutting structures to borehole enlargement Predator cutter block.
and avoids damaging vibrational loading of the cutters. The reamer
placement and operating parameters are also optimized for
performance with the rest of the BHA components.

Stabilization System for Rhino Integrated Borehole Enlargement System
Running the stabilization system with the Rhino XS reamer helps to
reduce vibration downhole. The stabilization system’s concentric
stabilizer increases lateral support in the enlarged wellbore and
improves dynamic stability. This impedes vibration that can shorten the
service life of downhole tools and surface equipment, slows drilling,
results in an irregular borehole and—in severe cases—leads to loss of
the entire BHA downhole.

The stabilizer is activated by the same ball-drop mechanism as the

Rhino XS reamer and is typically run undergauge 30 ft [9.14 m] above the
reamer. Tungsten-carbide DEIs in the stabilizer blocks ensure superior
wear resistance. Diamond-enhanced

Drilling-Type Underreamer
The drilling-type underreamer (DTU) is a tricone underreamer with cutter
arms that deploy in response to hydraulic pressure on a piston-cam
system. The underreamer runs in conjunction with a drill bit or a bullnose
on a bottom-box connection depending on pilot hole condition or project
objectives. The tool’s three-arm design can increase the pilot hole
diameter up to 75%, depending on tool size.

The underreamer’s cutters retract in the absence of hydraulic pressure

and the closing force of a piston spring. This enables the tool to be
repositioned for selective underreaming or retrieval from the well. The
tool allows fluid flow to the bit or bullnose through the bottom connection;
flow can be divided depending on the application. Orifice jets can be
selected in accordance with existing hydraulics to cool cutters and to
maintain annular lift of cuttings.

Applications
■■ Wiping out bridges and keyseats
■■ Drilling and underreaming in fault zones and swelling formations
■■ Opening reservoir sections for gravel packing
■■ Underreaming while drilling (UWD)

Benefits
■■ Increases the pilot hole diameter up to 75%
■■ Can be selectively repositioned for selective underreaming or retrieval

Features
■■ API Reg box down for makeup to bit or jetted bullnose
■■ Milled-tooth, TCI, or PDC cutters available for formation demands
■■ Facilitates fluid passage to bits or jetted bullnoses to divert flow
when necessary
■■ Cutter arms can be changed on rig floor for quick replacement Drilling-type underreamer.
