Lesson Plan 8

Name of the curricular structure(s):

Civic Literacy (Covid-19)

Seeking reputable information regarding Covid-19

Read Aloud: Child friendly explanation of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEYq_Yv9PXY

Specific concepts to be taught:

I want the student to understand …

That there is a lot of information about Covid-19 and it can be overwhelming. However,

students can conduct their own information about Covid-19 and provide this information to other

students.

Standards:

ELA

1. RL.K.1 With prompting and support, ask and answer questions about key details in a text.

2. RL.K.4 Ask and answer questions about unknown words in a text.

Social Studies (Government Strand)

9. Individuals have shared responsibilities toward the achievement of common goals in

homes, schools and communities.

10. The purpose of rules and authority figures is to provide order, security and safety in

the home, school and community.

Rationale: Covid-19 (Coronavirus) has impacted the lives of many individuals all over the

world. There are many news resources that provide an overwhelming amount of information

regarding Covid-19 and this can be scary for many children. For this assignment students will be

able to conduct their own research based on questions that they have. They will create a

presentation and their target audience will be other students.

4. Internet sources (Vetted by teacher)

5. YouTube

6. Pencil

7. Crayons

8. Markers

9. Paint

10. Paper
11. Poster Boards

12. Suggests for materials from students

Step by step procedures:

I have decided to have this lesson plan be virtual since the topic is of Covid-19 and many

students are learning virtually

1. First I will create a KWL (Know, Want to know, Learn)chart virtually(shareable google

doc) with my students. I will allow my students (w/ parents assistance) to add their KW

(know and want to know) to the chart. I will also seek new sources based on students

questions (students can also provide additional sources with teachers approval for

credibility reasons)

2. I will conduct a Zoom Meeting and we will discuss what is on the KW in the chart (we

will add more if students would like to) Before continuing students will be asked to refer

to their (W) want to know from the chart

3. I will read and/or show the following videos (via zoom)

Students who cannot attend the Zoom meeting will be provided with the links below

Child friendly explanation of Coronavirus (COVID-19)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nEYq_Yv9PXY

4. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqaXBtSaiUE

5. After the videos as a class we will refer back to our W. If a student's question was “How

can I protect my grandparents from getting Coronavirus” we can add to our L section of

the chart our answer.

6. At this point I will review sources that I have answering students questions as well as

making the sources available for all students to access

7. Students will be able to add facts that they’ve learned to the chart as well (credibility

checked by teacher)

8. Now that students have sources students will be able to create a presentation (book,

powerpoint, clay animation, painting ect.) of any form that they’d like to showcase what

they’ve learned

9. Students will show their presentations during a class meeting via zoom or google

hangout.

Cultural relevance, social justice, and/or linguistic pluralism:

This topic is relevant because students are already subjected to an overwhelming amount of

information regarding Covid-19. This lesson will allow students to develop critical

consciousness since they are conducting their own research and presenting information they feel

is important. They will be creating content that will be easily understood by their peers since the

presentation is from a students perspective.

Assessment:

I will assess my students through the KWL chart to see how they have added to their knowledge.

I will also assess students by viewing their presentations and making sure that they have used

information from the resources that we reviewed as a class.
