OLD SCHOOL ROLE PLAYING

What is Old School Role Playing about?

At Old School we are all about the classic version of role playing games that were popular in the late
1970s to the early 1980s. You know the games. You played them as kids. They were far better than many
of the later versions that came along. At Old School we bring you high quality adventures and adventure
products for gaming at a reasonable price.

The adventures themselves are well thought out. They have a few puzzles, riddles and other encounters
as well as plenty of monster bashing action. Some have been thoroughly play tested by other gamers. The
goal is to provide you the game master adventures to use on the spur of the moment when players want to
play and you do not have the time to prepare something spectacular.

The planet Horanos, a world in the Sonora sector, is known for having small deposits of
Boramium. This rare radioactive element has only been discovered here on this world in the
Sonora sector. Most of the galaxy no longer uses nuclear power for anything. But this element is
special. The Olonsean Empire has used this mineral to build “Planet Buster” bombs which can
create an enormous nuclear explosion capable of destroying entire worlds. Or so they believe. So
far none of these new bombs have been tested on an actual planet.

The Olonseans are a very aggressive empire. They are building up arms at a frightening pace.
Fortunately even the deposits of Boramium on Horanos are not significant enough to totally
change the balance of power in the region. The Olonseans have built but a few of these bombs
and are eager to build more.

Commander Cuccuins of the Ilsunsi Directorate intelligence services approaches the travelers
while they are in star port. He has a proposition for them. He wishes to hire a team of
mercenaries who have no visible connection to the Ilsunsi Directorate. The mission is to board a
high speed monorail that delivers Boramium from the mines on Horanos to the star port on that
planet. He wants the mercenaries to steal the Boramium shipment and then blow up the monorail.

He offers CR 200,000 for completion of this mission. He will offer CR 50000 for equipment
needed in advance of the mission along with five magnetic ZRG-52 explosive mines.

Naturally Commander Cuccuins is neglecting to mention some of the hazards that this job might
entail. He wants the travelers to accept this mission so he has intentionally left a few important
details out of the offer:

1. The Monorail is actually a Skyrail. The track for this is 300 feet off of the ground. This
world is a rocky and mountainous world. It is also quite dangerous. There are hostile
creatures and a hostile environment to deal with. Active volcanoes in the region erupt at
variable times.

2. The Skyrail is a high speed train. It travels at 300 miles per hour at peak speed.

3. The Skyrail tracks are electrified and are potentially fatal to anyone who steps on them

4. There are armed guards aboard the Skyrail and they will shoot to kill anyone robbing the
train

5. The special mines offered by Commander Cuccuins are actually small nuclear devices.
They will destroy a lot more than just the skyrail when they go off

6. The Skyrail has other valuable, and dangerous, cargo.

7. The largest volcano in the region is expected to go off soon. This might occur during the
raid. This could be potentially fatal to anyone in the region who gets too close.

8. Local miners rely on the production of this mineral for their livelihoods. They will not be
pleased with any strangers involved in destroying their operation.

9. Boramium is valuable to a lot of individuals other than just the Olonseans. Some of them
may try to get possession of the minerals once the travelers have taken possession.

10. The Olonseans have reason to expect something along these lines and may have taken
preventative measures of their own.

This map actually is not an entire world map. It is a map of the land features along the path of the
Skyrail. The region is very rocky. There are mountains and hills all around the path. There is also
a lake which the Skyrail crosses on the route. The Skyrail exists only for one purpose: to bring
Boramium to the star port for transport off world. Once it reaches the depot in town it is
extremely well guarded by hundreds of local soldiers. It is also well guarded at the mines by both
miners and soldiers. The only time when it is under a small guard is while it is in transit between
these two points.

Should the travelers find themselves on the ground during their adventures (between the city and
the mines) there will be a chance of a random encounter. Such encounters should be rolled every
hour. A roll of 9+ will indicate an encounter as follows:

RANDOM ENCOUNTERS

1. 1D6 Horanos Indigenous Natives

2. One Horanos Mountain Beast
3. Aircraft flies overhead (spots the travelers on a 12+)
4. Tremor from the Volcano (but no eruption)
5. Horanos Patrol
6. 1D6 Boramium Miners

Aircraft Overhead

This will be a patrol helicopter with two mounted submachine guns. They will demand surrender
via loudspeaker and then open fire if the travelers do not comply. See Cepheus Engine SRD page

Tremor

These are generally harmless. If two tremors are rolled, however, the second one will precede the
actual eruption by 1D6 minutes.

SKYRAIL WORLD MAP KEY

1. The Horanos Boramium Mines

Conditions at the mines are horrific. Safety precautions are virtually unheard of on this world.
The workers on Horanos are desperate for work. Working in the mines is considered a privilege.
Literally every able-bodied person either works at the mines or wants to do so.

There are several hundred miners in the mines at any one time. The next shift is generally waiting
outside. There are at least two dozen armed guards patrolling the mines and another three dozen
that guard the outside. All are armed with submachine guns. Five guard towers cover the
approaches to the mines. These all contain machine guns and search lights.

2. Caves

Some of the indigenous population of Horanos are primitive. They live in caves and use stone
tools and implements. They are a hunting and gathering society. But these people are quite
dangerous. They tend to be hostile to anyone not of their clan. 1D6 of them will be present at this
cave should the travelers visit this place. See stats for the group in the random encounter section.

3. Lake

The Skyrail crosses directly over the lake. The rails are far above the water.
4. Mount Horanos

This massive volcano erupts at varying intervals. When it does erupt it can send lava and ash
hundreds of miles from the volcano. These eruptions are quite violent and are very dangerous to
the locals. Even as far away as Horanos city the noise from the eruptions can be deafening.

There has not been an eruption in nearly a decade. Scientists predict that an eruption is imminent.

5. Horanos City

This busy town has a large starport west of town. Miners and other workers fill the streets and
markets of this town day and night. Offworlders will be looked upon with suspicion here.

The Skyrail travels from the mines to the city every three hours. In between these trips it boards
passengers and returns to the mines.

Each hour that the travelers are on Horanos a roll should be made to determine the status of
Mount Horanos. A roll of 2D6 should be made. A roll of 9+ will indicate an eruption has begun.
When this begins there will be a large cloud of smoke and fire which rises nearly a mile in the
air. Lava will begin flowing and will reach the outskirts of Horanos city in one day. Within 1D6
hours the lava will also reach the starport and damage spacecraft and prevent any takeoffs.

The Skyrail is a dangerou place to visit unless you are a passenger aboard the train. The rails are
electrified. Anyone coming into contact with them will take 2D6+10 damage for contact with a
rail.

The Skyrail travels at high speed and at towering heights. As it is so well guarded at the two
destination points it is essential that anyone attacking it must do so somewhere in between the
two places it stops. This requires planning and high tech equipment to achieve. The methods of
getting aboard the craft are up to the imaginations of the players. It is up to the GM to decide
what will work and what will not. But some points need to be considered:

- The players must find a way to get to the correct heights to reach the Skyrail train

- Speed is also a consideration

- Antigravity gear might be needed

- Some method of gaining access to the cars is essential. The doors are kept locked
while the train is in motion.
- The train could be stopped by some means such as disabling the Skyrail. Guards
aboard the train would react to any stoppage immediately.

- Air Rafts or other light craft might be employed to catch up with the train while it
is in motion

- The guards aboard the train must be dealt with or avoided

- The command car might be taken over by the travelers

- Some method of extracting the minerals and transporting them to the starport
must be employed

- Any disruption to the electrical current of the Skyrail will stop the train (after it
comes to a halt). The generator for the Skyrail is located at Horanos City.

The Skytrain consists of eight cars. All but the command car can be reached via the adjacent car.
The command car has only a side door which is kept locked at all times until in station or at the
mines. The other cars also have a side door. These doors are kept locked while the train is in
motion.

Two guards (from the list in car 4) patrol the train constantly and can be met in any car on a 8+.
Morale of the guards is not high. They are well paid but the job requires long hours and this
world is not a particularly exciting place to live. Most guards work here a year or two and then
take their money off world to spend. If four or more guards are dead or incapacitated a morale
check should be made for the rest. A roll of 8+ will indicate that they flee (1-3) or surrender (4-
6).

1. Command Car

All control of the Skytrain is from this car. The onboard computer is located at the back of the
car. Video consoles and command stations are at the front. This car has no connecting door to
any other car on the train. It does, however, have an outside door for the command personnel to
enter and leave the car while in station.

2. Cargo Car

This car is filled with containers that have a biological hazard label on them. These containers are
filled with samples taken from the indigenous tribes living in caves all over Horanos. It is
believed that new biological warfare potential can be discovered by testing these people for
diseases not yet encountered by others in the sector. To determine if any of this material could be
hazardous to the travelers roll 2D6. A roll of a 12 will indicate that a potentially fatal disease
might be caught from exposure to one of these containers. The chance of a leak from one of these
containers is high (7+).

3. Crew Mess

The guards of this train stay on for very long shifts. Sometimes these shifts are more than a single
day. Cooking, eating and sleeping arrangements are available on this train. This area has table
with chains and a kitchen.

There is a chance (8+) that 1D6+1 guards from Car 4 will be present here playing cards. At meal
times there will be 1D6 guards here eating.

4. Crew Sleeping Quarters

Six beds are provided here for the train’s guards to sleep. These beds are bunk beds. At least half
of the complement of guards will be awake at any time. The guards are a motley crew of thugs
and former military personnel. They have a variety of weapons and skills but little morale.

5. Cargo Car

Eight large containers contain markings indicating that radioactive waste is in them. These are
the radioactive minerals that the Ilsunsi commander is looking for. Each container is about 100
pounds. None of them are leaking. All are packed very carefully due to their extremely dangerous
radioactive nature.

Each container is about two feet in diameter and three feet high. Blinking lights and warning
signs on the containers give the appearance of extreme danger. But these containers are safe.
However shots fired in this compartment could be extremely dangerous. Any shots that miss
have a chance (12+) of striking a container or hitting one on a ricochet. Striking a container with
a stray round will cause a leak on a roll of 9+.

Leaks are potentially fatal to anyone in the area from severe radiation exposure. See Cepheus
Engine SRD page 165. This will be equivalent to 4D6x10 instant rad exposure from a one minute
exposure to the minerals and for every minute afterwards. Anyone not wearing protective gear
will be in extreme danger should this occur.

Two guards stand on duty here at all times. The chances of either of them being alert are 7+.

Barrels of unmarked chemicals are being transported here. These chemicals are used in the
mining process. Each barrel is marked with hazardous material warnings but has no explanation
of what chemical is inside.
8. Engineering Car/Caboose

The value of the minerals is not a closely guarded secret. Mercenaries all over the sector are
considering coming to this world to gain possession of them. One load of Boramium is enough to
get rich. One motley groups of thugs has decided to make a play for them. But they have arrived
to the planet after the travelers have. Once they hear of the theft of the materials (and everyone
will) they will try to catch whoever is bringing them to the star port. They will wait in ambush
just outside of the port. They will intercept the travelers on a roll of8+.

When the travelers are in star port, but before getting the minerals aboard their craft, they will be
approached by a representative of the Olosnean Empire on a roll of 7+. He will threaten the
travelers with retribution from the Olonsean Empire if they do not immediately turn the minerals
over to him. He will not attempt to attack the travelers but may (9+ threaten to call the star port
security).

If this bluster does not work for him then he may offer to compensate the travelers CR 100000
for their trouble.

a representative of the Wikomi Conglomerate on a roll of 5+. This representative will offer to

Diplomat 3rd Secretary Alice Petrov 956A47 Age 26

2 terms Cr7 240000 (the price of 8 containers)
Skills: Interrogation-1, Liaison-1, Vacc Suit-1

She has people in port who will take possession of them and take them off world.

Commander Cuccuins does not actually know, for sure, just how many containers are aboard the
train. If the travelers bring him four containers he will consider that sufficient to complete the
mission and will pay in full. If the players bring him more than four containers he will award a
bonus of CR 10000 per container over that number. Total destruction of the train and the rails
will satisfy that portion of the mission objectives.
Causing a nuclear explosion aboard the Skyrail will be considered an act of terrorism by the
officials on Horanos. Should word of the travelers involvement get out it is possible that a large
bounty might be put on their heads by local mining officials and the Horanos government.

Should the explosion of the Skyrail coincide with the eruption of Mount Horanos environmental
protestors all over the Sonora sector will put a bounty on the heads of the travelers for
committing eco-terrorism. Many of the locals will come hunting for the travelers as the volcano
is considered sacred to many of them.

The containers could easily be sold to other interested parties for as much as CR 50000 each. The
Olonseans would certainly be willing to buy them back if the travelers gain possession of them.
Others in the Sonora sector would also be willing to buy them for varying amounts.

Much is left to the GM to adjudicate in this scenario. How the travelers choose to complete the
mission, or attempt to, is up to them. Many possibilities for this exist. There are too many for me
to predict all of them.
