IA0135 – Semester Project – 2020-1

In groups of 3 to 4 students, design a wing so that it is aeroelastically tailored to provide optimal cruise performance ONCE aeroelastically deformed.

The design will be subjected to the following standards and conditions:

 emb-314-a-29-super-tucano
 Conventional wing
 Wing Half-Span according to test zone in wind tunnel
 Max Chord length according to the test zone in wind tunnel
 Air properties of Bogotá FULL
 Max Speed must be calculated and tested in wind tunnel
 Cruise speed must be calculated and tested in wind tunnel
 Each Group must have their OWN different profile (sweep angle -25°, 0°, +25°)
 It is highly recommended that you work with a solid foam wing
 The wing has to be attached to root.
 Use an aileron according to the real wing.

The experiment will also be used to corroborate analytical models performed with CFD and FEM models within ANSYS (or other). The Semester
activities are described as follows:

Part 1 – of the Semester - Design of a lab for Aeroelastic testing (Hand-in: on the Date of Exam1)
 Design a wind tunnel experiment for testing of a light-weight-flexible wing (same for emb-314-a-29-super-tucano aircraft) with aileron, the
wing is made of polystrene and measure deformations at different wind speeds.
 Produce preliminary calculations (virtual wing) demonstrating its properties.
 Develop a full wing to test it in wind tunnel.
 Perform the laboratory experiment and write up the experimental results.

Part 2 – of the Semester - Lab testing and write-up (Hand-in: on the Date of Exam2)
 Design a wind tunnel experiment for testing of a light-weight-flexible design wing (same for emb-314-a-29-super-tucano aircraft) with ribs
and aileron, the wing is made of wood (balsa) and measure deformations at different wind speeds.
 Design a wind tunnel experiment for testing of an aileron effectiveness and measure deformations at different wind speeds.
 Perform the laboratory experiment and write up the experimental results.

Corte 3 – of the Semester- Analytical computational modelling and Final Document (Hand-in: on the Date of Exam3)
 Design a wind tunnel experiment for testing of a light-weight-flexible design wing (same for utva-75 aircraft) with ribs and aileron, the wing
is made of wood (balsa) and measure deformations at different wind speeds based on mass fuel capacity.
 Produce preliminary calculations demonstrating.
 Perform the laboratory experiment and write up the experimental results.
 Finalize the analytical models with CFD and FEM models.
 Propose the design modifications for the aircraft.
