Tiana Applique

This  is  a  pattern  guide  to  building  the  Tiana  Applique  by  Sahrit.

Intermediate.  

Measurements  

She  measures  about  3”  long  on  2’’  wide.  

You  can  change  her  size  to  be  a  bit  bigger  or  smaller  by  using  threads  in  different  thickness  and  
different  hook  sizes.  

Materials  

The  whole  applique  weighs  less  than  one  ounce  so  you’ll  need  about  0.2-­‐0.5  oz.  from  each  
color.  

Yarn  

1. RED  HEART  super  saver  ECO  Worsted  4  100%  ACRYLIC  7  oz  /  198  g  –  364  yds  /  333  m  
a. Cafe  #360  –  COLOR  A  
2. CARON  Simply  Soft,  Worsted  weight  100%  ACRYLIC  6  oz/170  g  –  315  yds  /  288m  
a. Sage  –  COLOR  B  
b. Vanilla  –  COLOR  C  
c. Black  –  COLOR  D  
d. Soft  Green  –  COLOR  E  

Hook  

I  use  a  Steel  Crochet  hook  no.  2/0mm,  which  would  be  a  size  between  B  –  C,  2  ½  mm  regular  US  
hook!  (Steel  crochet  hooks  are  different  then  the  regular  ones).

Notes  
1. Make  sure  you  read  through  the  whole  pattern  before  starting  it  to  make  sure  you

2. The  same  pattern  is  used  for  different  sized  appliques.  The  bigger  hook  number  the  
thicker  the  yarn  or  vice  versa  the  applique  will  be.  
3. Tiana’s  head  is  worked  in  a  continuous  round,  do  not  join  or  turn  unless  otherwise  
stated.  
4. We  will  be  using  the  sliding  loop  technique  aka  slipknot  for  circle  ring  aka  magic  ring.  
Next  you  will  find  a  quick  tutorial  on  how  it  works.  
Instructions  For  SLIDING  LOOP  

With  the  long  side  of  the  yarn  in  the  palm  of  
your  hand,  wind  yarn  around  index  finger  
twice.    

From  right  to  left  bring  hook  underneath  

the  loops  on  your  finger  and  pull  the  yarn  
on  the  left  end  through  the  others.  Yarn  
over  and  chain  one.  Carefully  take  out  
finger  from  ring,  chain  the  no.  of  stitches  
that  is  asked  of  you.    

Now  for  the  fun  part!  You  will  see  you  have   Picture  1  -­‐  Sliding  Loop  

TWO  circles  and  a  tail  of  yarn  hanging,  what  you  want  to  do  is  first  make  sure  which  of  the  two  
circles  moves  when  being  pulled,  then  sc  your  stitches  and  then  FIRST  completely  pull  that  
moved  circle  (which  makes  the  other  circle  disappear)  and  then  PULL  the  tail  of  yarn  and  see  
how  the  magic  is  done!  A  perfect  circle  is  made!  

Tiana’s  Head  

COLOR  A.  

*Notice:  Tiana’s  head  is  worked  in  a  continuous  round,  do  not  join  or  turn.  I  recommend  to  use  
a  stitch  marker  on  the  first  sc  of  the  second  round,  or  string  a  different  color  of  yarn  there  so  
you  can  remember  when  you  finished  working  a  round.  

Begin  with  sliding  loop.  Ch  1.  

Rnd  1:  6  sc  in  ring.  (pull  tail  of  yarn)  (6  sc)  

Rnd  2:  2  sc  in  each  of  next  6  sc.  (12  sc)  

Rnd  3:  *2  sc  in  next  sc,  1  sc  in  foll  sc,  rep  from  *  5  more  times.  (18  sc)  

Rnd  4:  *2  sc  in  next  sc,  1  sc  in  each  of  foll  2  sc,  rep  from  *  5  more  times.  (24  sc)  
Dress  

Switch  to  color  B  to  continue  with  dress.    

Row  5:  Working  in  BL’s  only  this  row,  1  sc  in  first  sc,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  3  sc,  turn.  (4  sc)  

Row  6:  ch1,  1  sc  in  same  sp,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  2  sc,    2  sc  in  last  sc,  turn.  (5  sc)  

Row  7:  ch  1,  1  sc  in  same  sp,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  4  sc,  2  sc  in  ch,  turn.  (7  sc)  

Row  8:  ch1  (consider  as  sc),  1  sc  in  each  of  next  7  sc  (consider  ch  from  below  as  sc),  turn.  (7  sc)  

Row  9:  *ch  4,  Sl  st  in  2nd  ch  from  hook,  1  sc  in  next  ch,  1  hdc  in  last  ch,  skip  sc,  Sl  st  in  next  FL  sc  ,  
rep  from  *  2  more  times,  1  sc  in  ch,  switch  to  color  C,  Turn.  

Notice:  Next  row  work  the  BL’s  of  row  9.  Since  you  will  be  facing  the  pattern’s  WS  it  will  seem  
like  FL’s.    

Row  10:  Ch  1,  2  sc  in  next  sc,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  5  sc,  2  sc  in  last  sc,  turn.  (9  sc)  

Row  11:  ch  1,  1  sc  in  same  sp,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  9  sc  (consider  ch  from  below  as  sc),  turn.  (10  
sc)  

Row  12:  ch  3  (consider  as  dc),  1  sc  in  each  of  next  10  sc,  Sl  st.  Fasten  off.  

Hair  

Join  color  D  in  3rd  st  of  head  pattern  (counting  up  from  connecting  sp  with  dress,  looking  on  RS  
of  pattern  on  your  right).  

Row  13:  1  sc  in  each  of  next  3  sc,  1  hdc  in  each  of  next  2  sc,  1  dc  in  each  of  next  4  sc,  1  hdc  in  
each  of  next  2  sc,  1  sc  in  each  of  next  3  sc,  skip  1  sc,  Sl  st  in  BL  of  foll  sc,  ch  8,  Fasten  off,  weave  
in  end  of  yarn  and  twist  ch  until  looks  curled.    

Row  14:  Working  in  FL’s  only  this  row,  Join  color  E  in  first  dc  from  row  13,  ch  3,  Sl  st  in  2nd  ch  
from  hook,  1  sc  in  next  ch,  *Sl  st  in  next  sc,  ch  4,  Sl  st  in  2nd  ch  from  hook,  1  sc  in  next  sc,  1  hdc  
in  last  ch,  rep  from  *  once  more,  1  sc  in  next  sc,  switch  to  color  D,  turn.  
 Row  15:  ch  4,  working  in  the  remaining  loops,  2  tr  in  BL  of  sc,  1  tr  in  each  of  the  next  3  BL’s  
(being  on  the  pattern’s  WS,  these  will  seem  as  FL’s),  Sl  st  in  foll  hdc  from  row  below,  ch  8,  
Fasten  off,  weave  in  end  of  yarn  and  twist  ch  until  looks  curled.

Finishing  
1. Hide  all  thread  endings,  by  weaving  them  in.  
2. Cut  felt  that  covers  back  of  pattern.  
3. Glue  felt  to  your  appliques  back.  
4. Wait  till  dry  and  add  attachment  of  your  choice.
