Writing a Lesson Plan (100 points)

Choice Activity (From curriculum map): Students will use various materials such as animal
plastic toys and tractors to create paintings. For example, rolling the tractor wheels in
paint and placing it on the painting canvas, or making footprints with the animal legs.
Age: Kindergarten
Domain: Art
Theme: Farm and Food

1. Objectives and Goals (What is the standard/standards you will cover with this lesson 10
pts

• Production by exploring a variety of lines, shapes, colors, and textures to create patterns
through drawing, painting, clay, printmaking, 2-D and 3-D, and mixed media.

• Write and/or draw pictures about a specific topic and provide details about the topic.

2. Anticipatory Set (What is your introduction to this lesson: Give Detail) 15 pts.

• To introduce this lesson the students will be asked to meet at the carpet area of the
classroom.
• Once they are all seated the teacher will introduce the lesson by asking the students
what they know about farms.
• She will allow the students to share what they know by raising their hands to answer
the question.
• When a student answers the question, the teacher can give feedback to the student
letting them know what they said about farms and expanding a little.
• The teacher will then introduce a book that has to do with the topic (books about farms
and farm foods).
• Once the book has been read the students will be instructed to go back to their seats to
learn more and begin the activity.
3. Required Materials for Activity 10 pts

• Large sheets of white construction paper

• A variety of washable paints
• Plastic toy farm animals
• Toy tractors
• Paint brushes
• Paint aprons
• Water cups to rinse out the paint brushes

4. Direct Instruction (Define lesson step by step) 15 pts

• Once students are back in their seats after the introductory of the lesson the teacher
will explain what the students will be doing.
• The teacher will explain that they will be using objects from what they just learned to
create a picture of their choice using things like farm animals and tractors to paint
pictures on to the white construction paper.
• Once the students know what to do, they will each grab an apron and the teacher can
help tie it if the student doesn’t know how to.
• The teacher will demonstrate how to use the objects to paint before passing out any
materials. For example, rolling the tractor wheels in paint and rolling them across the
paper, or dipping the animal’s feet in the paint and creating prints.
• Once the teacher has explained, materials can be passed out (students can help by
passing out a sheet of construction paper to every classmate) The teacher will provide
the paint in paper plates either for each student or a couple of plates per table group.
• The teacher will also place enough toy tractors and farm animals for each student at
their tables along with paint brushes.
• Once everything is passed out the teacher will allow the students to begin their
paintings.
5. Guided Practice (Scaffolding/Questions: How will YOU participate in this lesson) 15 pts

• The teacher will participate in the lesson by walking around the classroom and helping
out any student who might be having trouble using the objects that were provided for
them.
• The teacher will ask individual students what they are creating and allow them to
explain. Questions can be asked about the painting and what materials they used to
create certain things on the painting.
• The teacher can also engage in conversation with the whole class, certain table groups
or individual students by asking them questions about farms and foods. For example,
“How do you think the tractors are used in the farms?”, “What are some of your favorite
foods that come from farms?”, or “Have you ever been to a farm?” (if yes) “What did
you see at the farm?”
• For the activity the teacher can also participate with the students and create a painting
with them.
• The teacher can also help students who are stuck by having a conversation with them
about things they can draw. For example, they can use the tractor wheels to make a
road for a farm, the animals footprints as a base for drawing their own horse, pig,
chicken etc., or the paint brushes to draw a sky, background or people.

6. What will you assess during this lesson? 10 pts

• During this lesson the teacher will assess the student’s knowledge about the lesson in
areas such as recalling things in a farm and farm foods. For example, animals that live on
the farm, the different jobs that farmers have, foods that grow on farms.
• The teacher will also assess how the students use the various art materials provided to
them in different ways to create a piece of art.

7. Closing: (Answer the following questions) 25 points

List DAP principles that relate to this lesson.

• Development and learning occur in and are influenced by multiple social and
cultural contexts.
• Children learn in a variety of ways.
• Children’s experiences shape their motivation and approaches to learning.
• Early experiences have profound effects on development and learning.

Have you looked at inclusion? Culture? Is it planned well?

• While developing the lesson I did try to look at inclusion to make sure that all
students were able to participate in the lesson and activity. I tried to consider
how all students could be a part of an activity that would allow the students to
express themselves in their own ways. With the art activity the students were
able to use the materials to the best of their ability to create what they wanted
using things from what they learned.
• When looking at culture I looked at how different cultures can learn differently
about the foods that are eaten and harvested by different famers around the
world. And how animals could also be represented differently among the many
cultures of the students. I think that the art project allowed them to freely
express their cultures as it was open for them to create whatever they wanted.
• Looking back at the lesson I think that it is planned well for the most part. There
is a time for them to learn and a time for them to create based on what they
learned. There are actual objects involved in the activity that allows the students
to connect what they learned. It gives them the hands on expirience because
they can touch the tractors and farm animals.
