BOOK EXTENSION ACTIVITY - LESSON PLAN

1. Pre-K/ CCSD K-2nd Grade Core Standards:

1. PK. 5. Demonstrate awareness that print carries a message.

2. Objectives:
SWBAT – Students will be able to identify vocabulary words from a book and use them in an
activity.

3. Materials/Equipment:

• Henry’s Freedom Box book


• Premade bingo boards with vocabulary words from the book in each bingo square.
• Bingo Markers
• Teachers caller cards
• Prizes for the winners (optional)

4. Teaching:
A. Reading the book
• To begin this lesson the teacher will ask the students where they would like to meet for
reading time.
• She will take a vote from the student’s whichever place has the most votes is where they
will meet.
• Once the place has been chosen the student will meet the teacher there and be ready to
learn.
• The teacher will begin the activity with a discussion question, she will ask, how many of
you know the word multicultural and what it means?
• She will allow the students to answer by raising their hands.
• Once the students have answered she will tell them the meaning of the word and how it
will relate to the book they are reading.
• After the discussion the teacher will begin to reader the book to the students while
occasionally asking the students questions such as, “What do you think is going to
happen next and what do you think that word means?
• The students will have a chance to answer by raising their hands.
• Once the book has been read the teacher will do another discussion this time the students
will turn to their shoulder partners and discuss what they learn after reading the book.
• The students will be given time to share out loud what they talked about with their
shoulder partners.
• Once the discussion is over the students will be instructed to go back to their seats to
begin the activity.

B. Extension activity:
• For the extension activity the students will be playing a vocabulary bingo game in which
the words on the bingo cards go along with the words in the book they had just read.
• Each students will be given a bingo card along with bingo markers.
• The teacher will be calling the cards while walking around the room to make sure all the
students see the word and are able to mark it on their boards.
• The teacher will call a card with a vocab word on it and ask the students if they know the
definition to the word.
• After the students have answered the teacher will tell the students the meaning which is
written on each caller card/
• The teacher may choose how a student can win, either a vertical/ horizontal line or to
cover the whole board.
• Once a student has won the teacher will check their board and clear them as winners, if
there are prizes, they will be able to pick one out.
• Play as many rounds as needed and the students will be allowed to switch boards with
their classmates after a game has ended.

5. Closure:

To end the activity the students will speak with their groups about the book and the activity and
if it helped them learn more about cultures as well as new vocabulary
words.
