Math Experience #2

Math Skill: Matching

Age: 4-5

Number of Students: 1-3

Content Standards: 1. PK. 3c. Match the number of objects in a set to the correct

numeral 0 to 5.

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1. Organize objects in categories based on the numbers presented to them.

2. Identify and group the same numbers to complete the puzzle.

3. See and identify a numeral 0-5 presented in different forms (ex: In word

form, on a set of dice, in the form of fingers or by counting dots.)

Materials: Snowman number match game pieces, can choose from numbers 1-5

or 6-10 each in a separate bag. Each snowman has a total of six pieces that

complete each one. (A snowman head with the number on top, the number in

word form, in dice, in black dots, in a domino format, and in fingers.)

Activity: For this activity gather up the students and have them sit in a place

where they can all easily access the tabletop or wherever the game is being

played. There are two Ziplock bags, one has the numbers 1-5 and the other has

the numbers 6-10. Start with the first bag (1-5) and set the other one aside for

now (6-10). Take the game pieces out of the bag and place them face up on the

table. Mix them up like domino pieces to challenge the students to find all of their

pieces to complete their snowman. Once the pieces are mixed allow the students

to pick one snowman head each. After they have all taken a snowman head

explain the objective of the game. Which is find all of the snowballs that

represent the number on your snowman’s hat. Help the students as needed

whether its counting the number of dots or helping them read the word form of

their number. Once the students have finished finding all of the snowballs that

complete their snow man (each one should have six pieces), have them place all

their pieces back into the center of the table and mix them up once again. Repeat

this game until all the students have had a chance to have all the numbers 1-5, or

until they are satisfied with playing. If the students are younger its best to play

with the 1-5 set and if the students are a bit older try introducing them to the

other Ziplock bag which contains the numbers 6-10, after playing with the 1-5 set.

Once the activity is finished place all the pieces back into their corresponding bags

and store away.

What Happened: The child that I did this activity with is in kindergarten and is

currently five years old. He did great with the snowman activity and quickly

understood the concept of the game. I first began with the Ziplock bag that

contained the number one through five and we both worked on the activity. I

allowed him to pick the snowman head that he wanted which had the number

written on top and I picked one for myself as well and set the rest aside. I laid out

the remaining pieces which are what is going to make the body of the snowman

and mixed them all up. I told him that the objective of this game was to find all

the ways that make the number on the top of his snowman’s hat. We began to

work on the activity and he quickly caught on and found all of the pieces to

complete his snowman and even offered to help me finish mine. We continued to

play and went through all of the snowman one through five 5. He was eager to

play and find all the pieces fast. Once we finished the first Ziplock bag he wanted

to move on and do the bag with 6-10. We went through all of them and he liked

the activity at a certain point he decided that he wanted to mix all the numbers

together one through ten and we worked on them as well. Overall, he did great

and he told me that he really loved the game and wanted to continue playing

again and again. The only part he did have some trouble with was identifying the

word that corresponded with each number other than that he identified all the

other aspects with ease.

What Next: Develop a lesson that focuses on identifying the word form of a

number so that they are able to identify which word matches the number on the

snowman. Practice counting to help with number identification.
