Math Skill: Identifying Numerals

Age: 3-4

Number of Students: 7

Content Standards: 1.PK.3a Recognize and read numerals 0-5

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1. Identify numerals 0-6

2. Match the number of objects to the correct numeral 0 to 6.

3. Count using one to one correspondence.

Materials:

● construction paper
● marker
● glue
● popsicle sticks
● Dice

Activity:

1. Cut construction paper into squares and write the numerals 0 through 6 on
each of the squares.
2. Staple or tape a craft stick onto each square, creating a small numeral sign.
Lay the numeral signs on the table in random order.
3. Invite children to wherever you plan on doing the activity and explain the
activity.
4. Invite the children to roll a single die and count the dots on the top side.
5. Challenge them to hold up the numeral sign that represents the number of
dots on the die.
6. Continue as long as the children are interested.
7. Depending upon the developmental level of your children, make numeral
signs from 0 through 12 and have them roll two dice.

What Happened: I did my activity with some of the children that were up during
nap time. I showed them how to do the activity then let them do it one by one.
The children did really good counting the dots on dice and they were able to pick
the right number. Children joined the table as they woke up and I ended up with
children before I had to leave. It was only one child that I had to help count the
dots and match the number. When a child did put the wrong number I had them
count the dots on the numbers then try again. We played a couple of times
before I had to leave but the children kept playing. I saw the kids playing the
game throughout the rest of the day.

What Next: For the next activity I would do a number hunt where i would hide
numbers in the classroom and have them find them as I call it out.
