Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Study

Human beings have always had an impact on their surroundings, and garbage is certainly

one of the major causes of the human-environmental deterioration. Man creates too much waste

for nature to keep up. Hence, in view of the unceasing growth of Earth’s population, proper waste

disposal has become an inevitable duty involving all of us.

Waste segregation is one of the best solutions to lessen the waste problem. According to

Waste Regulation in 2011, paper, cardboard, plastic, metal and glass must be segregated at source

unless it is technically or economically unfeasible. Under the same regulations, waste hierarchy

should be implemented; Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, other recovery and disposal. By law, this

hierarchy and segregation should be implemented because it helps recycling waste in particular.

(Environmental Monitoring Solution, 2016)

Even though this kind of waste management is already been implemented, our ignorance

always takes over. People do littering their waste wherever they have seen an available trash bin

resulting to mixed garbage without looking for each label of the appropriate bin. Their following

reasons are they always forgot to read each label and also too lazy to categorize their waste. This

results to improper waste disposal
