BBC LEARNING ENGLISH:

THE TEENAGE BRAIN

1. How long?
6 minutes.
2. How many percent can I understand after one time listening?
85%.
3. Content:

- The brain is responsible for the rebellious behaviours during the adolescent
years.
- According to Sarah-Jayne Blakemore from University College London who
specializes in the workings of the brain, particularly the teenage brain:
+ The understanding that the brain is still developing during the teenage years
is quite new.
+ The first papers on this subject were published in the late 90s.
+ Before that, the dogma had been that our brains are mostly fully developed
in early childhood, long before adolescence.
+ The prefrontal cortex is the part of the brain right at the front, just behind the
forehead and it’s involved in a whole range of very high-level cognitive tasks
such as decision making and planning. This region is undergoing very very
large amounts of development during the adolescent years.
+ So in terms of the expectations that we place on teenagers to, for example,
plan their homework, it might be too much given that we know that the region
of the brain that critically involved in planning is not developed yet.
4. What I learned/ I like best:
- This is new and interesting knowledge for me. And it’s also a little bit amusing
as teenagers now can use this as an excuse for not doing homework.
5. New words/phrases
- dogma (n) a set of beliefs that are strongly held and which are not
challenged.
Ex: People are coming to question the old dogmas.
