BBC LEARNING ENGLISH:

IMPROVING YOUR MEMORY

1. How long?
6 minutes.
2. How many percent can I understand after one time listening?
85%.
3. Content:
MEMORY
- Definition: the ability to store, encode and recall information
- Factors affecting: health, anxiety, mood, stress and tiredness
- Styles of remembering: visual, auditory and kinaesthetic
- New method: drawing ⇒ increased contextual representation; drawing =
making a lot of intuitive sense ⇒ encoding things in a greater level of detail
- Other methods: brain training (crosswords puzzle, sudoku), foods rich in
vitamin B (eggs, spinach, bananas, etc).

4. What I learned/ I like best:

- After watching the video, I have come to know that my usual learning style is
called kinaesthetic, which is to repeat the lessons for many times.
- I was surprised at the fact that drawing can be a better method of remember
things than writing as I always found it so time-consuming to draw.
- Another thing is that crossword puzzles and sudoku can help us to train our
brain and hence improve our memory, especially when we get older.
- Last but not least, foods rich in B vitamins can do wonders for our memory, so
I am considering changing my diet now.
5. New words/phrases
- Kinaesthetic (adj): learning by 'doing' and practicing something over and over
again.
Ex: I always make use of kinaesthetic learning style to learn by heart the lessons.
- Contextual (adj): seeing something in the situation where it usually exists.
Ex: To solve the problem, we need to analyse all the contextual clues we have.
- Intuitive sense (Phr): doing something based on feelings rather than facts or
proof.
Ex: My biggest weakness is constantly making decisions by intuitive sense.
