 FAQs for Candidates
What is required at my end to join the online classes?
You need a smart phone/tablet/laptop/desktop with good internet connection for attending online
classes. For exact specifications, please contact the MTI you intend joining.
Is there a standard class schedule, classroom ettiquete and assignment system for all MTIs?
Each DGS approved MTI shall be responsible for making an effective online delivery mechanism. For
details you may contact the concerned MTI.
What about the attendance criteria?
All applicable criteria regarding eligibilty, attendance, total course duration and assessment remain
unchanged. You shall be advised the methodology adopted to ensure compliance by your MTI.
Can 100% course be delivered online?

The component that is deliverable online varies from course to course and for some courses may be
upto 100%. For whatever part that is to be necessarily through contact sessions you shall be required
to visit the concerned MTI.
Can I choose different MTIs for online & contact component of the same course?
No. The MTI you enrol with for a particular course shall be responsible or its end to end completion
including certification.
Can I enrol & join a course being delivered online from abroad or onboard the ship?
You may join a course irrespective of your geographical location. However, you shall not be allowed to
enrol in any DGS approved course while you are engaged onboard a ship. The attendance in a shore
based course cannot be concurrent to sea service.
In a course that has both online as well as contact component, can they be attended in any order?
As the contact component is primarily practical/simulator based, for a full course it should be attended
after the necessary theory component is covered. However, only for refresher courses, the components
may be completed on any order at the mutual discretion of the MTI & the candidate.
How would I know if a MTI is approved for online delivery?

Can I enrol in multiple courses the same time? Can I club the contact component of two or more
courses at the same MTI to reduce the MTI visit days?
Simultaneous enrolement in online delivery component of more than one course shall not be allowed.
However, clubbing of contact component of more than one course may be permitted by the MTI. The
MTI shall be responsible to ensure adherance to requirements of each course.
I do not wish to attend online delivery. Can I attend a full course at an MTI?
You need to look for a DGS approved MTI offering the required course through 100% contact classes. If
you find one, you may attend.

FAQs for MTIs

I am a pre-sea institute. At what intervals should contact component be scheduled?
The duration & frequency of contact sessions need to be planned based on the course duration in a
manner so as to achieve the objectives of the course. However, last 3 months phase of every pre-sea
course must be a contact phase so as to reinforce the trainees ability to live in the tough ship like
conditions.

For a modular course, what is the maximum gap permitted between online and contact components?
MTIs must endeavour to plan to achieve nearly back to back delivery of both components. However, in
exceptional circumstances, both components must be completed within 3 months of each other.
For each course, is there a maximum limit to the duration of online component?
Yes. MTIs shall not exceed the duration of online component beyond stipulated by DGS coursewise.
However, MTIs shall inform candidates before enrolement about their break-up between online &
contact component.
My MTI does not wish to engage in online delivery. Can I continue with 100% contact delivery mode?
Yes
My pre-sea courses are affiliated to a University. Will the university examination be online?
For university examinations, you shall be guided by the university rules.
Can the contact component of two or more courses be clubbed together to reduce candidate's institute
visit days
Yes, as long as effectiveness of training is maintained and objectives achieved. MTIs shall be solely
responsible to ensure that the approved intake capacity during any training component is not exceeded
and records with requisite evidence maintained.
For Competency courses can we conduct online assessment?
Yes. MTIs may at their discretion conduct online examination for competency courses.
Will modular exit exams be online? Can the student take the online exit exam from home?
MTIs need to be guided by DGS guidelines on modular courses exit examination.
