Level : BE Course : CIEG 304
Year : III Semester : I
Time : F.M : 30 (may change)

Date of assignment: 2nd may 2020 Submission Date up to: 10th may 2020 (12AM)

Attempt all questions

Assume data suitably if required
Clarify your answer with neat sketch if needed
Each question carry equal marks
1. As a dam engineer, design and sketch concrete gravity dam for following data:
i. Maximum allowable compressive stress in concrete = 4000 kN/m2
ii. Specific gravity of concrete = 2.4
iii. Unit weight of water = 10 kN/m3
iv. Assume height of water to be hold by dam yourself ( choose any height
between 80 meter to 118 meter)
v. Assume other material and soil data required suitable ( if needed)

2. Check the stability of the dam section (neglecting effect of drainage gallery, no tail
water and assume earthquake coefficient suitably yourself ) at the base of question
(1) earlier considering load cases as below:
A. Reservoir empty case
i. Horizontal earthquake induced force towards U/S and vertical
earthquake induced force towards Downward
ii. Horizontal earthquake induced force towards U/S and vertical
earthquake induced force towards upward

B. Reservoir full case

i. Horizontal earthquake induced force towards D/S and vertical
earthquake induced force in upward
Determine:
a. Different safety factors for the stability analysis for above two cases
b. Different stresses produced in the toe and heel of the dam section for both case
c. Sketch the U/S elevation of the dam section with appropriate joints (horizontal and
vertical)

3. As a dam engineer, design and sketch earthen dam for following data:
i. Dam material is homogeneous course silt type
ii. Water height to be hold by the dam is ( select any value yourself
between 30 meter to 60 meter)
Determine:
a. The section of the dam
b. Determine and plot the phreatic line if the dam section is homogeneous and no any
filter
c. Determine and plot the phreatic line if the dam section is homogeneous and there is
horizontal filter ( assume filter length yourself suitably)

4. Design and sketch any type of the concrete arch dam for any imaginary site (assume
site dimension as per your own opinion: don’t adopt site dimension from note copy
and books directly) and further assume material and other required data suitable if
required.

5. Design and sketch an Ogee shaped spillway for the dam section of the question (1)
earlier. (Assume design discharge, spillway length, and other required data suitable
yourself: don’t copy directly from the book or note).

6. Write an article in the flowing title

Class Roll Number Title Remarks

1 to 10 Dam and other water control structures: good or
evil?
11-20 Dam and world history of dam
21-30 Concrete gravity dam and how to build a dam the
construction detail
31-40 Earthen dam and how to build a dam the
construction detail
41-50 Dam failure and consequences in the past
(including Nepal and worldwide)
all above it Dam and development of Nepal (past, present
and future)
Note:
1) Prepare good informative article (no length limit) and give your own view too
2) Do web search and follow standard reference and don’t forgot to give
reference list in the bottom of the article
3) You may type it in computer but not compulsory

End!!

Note:

1. Write answers in any paper and submit it (take photo scan it and convert to pdf if
possible, else submit taken photos directly by email (mahesh.bhatt@ku.edu.np,
maheshrajbhatt2014@gmail.com) note: make cover page indicating your identity (
name, class roll number, exam roll number department name etc. clearly)
2. If doing email is not possible due to internet etc. problem then submit these taken
photos by Facebook messenger or viber
Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/maheshraj.bhatt.5 and viber 9848741565
3. If it is not possible to submit electronically ( email or Facebook) then please inform
me by mobile message or call (9848741565) indicating that you are not able to submit
with some valid reasons
4. While sending email don’t forgot to state your information (full name, class roll
number, exam roll number, department name etc.)
5. Your answer should be identical in your own words and language ( i.e. assume data
yourself don’t copy from other)
