Meet the instructor

Michael G. Dreznes assumed his current position of Executive Vice-


President of the International Road Federation (IRF) in February of 2012.
Dreznes has spent the last thirty-four years working to make the roads
safer around the world. He is recognized as one of the world’s leading
specialists on roadside safety promoting the concept of “Forgiving Roads,”
and has conducted multiple road safety training seminars on roadside
safety, work zone safety, vulnerable user safety and road safety audit in
more than sixty countries around the world. Dreznes was the Co-Chairman
of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) AFB20 (2) Roadside Safety Subcommittee on
International Research Activities for eighteen years until he stepped down in 2019, Co-Chairman of
the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) Decade of Action Pillar 2: Safer Roads
and Mobility Project Group, and a member of the PIARC Road Safety Technical Committee 3.2
Design and Operation of Safer Road Infrastructure. In January 2015, Dreznes was named the
winner of the TRB AFB20 Roadside Safety Design Kenneth Stonex Lifetime Achievement Award.

SESSION 1 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


MONDAY, MAY 4, 2020 Gain a clear understanding of the scope and gravity of the global
9:00-11:00 road safety issue with an introduction to the United Nations
Status of the Second Decade of Decade of Action and the Safe System Approach Countermeasures.
Action Using the Safe System Clearly understand the “three legged stool” approach to road
Approach to Design “Forgiving Roads” safety; the road user, the vehicle and the road itself.

SESSION 2 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


WEDNESDAY, MAY 6, 2020 Introduction to the strategic approach to make roadsides and
9:00-11:00 medians safe by using countermeasures designed to either keep
Forgiving Poles, Longitudinal Barriers vehicles on the roadway, provide for a safe recovery if vehicles
leave the roadway or reduce the severity of the crash. A detailed
explanation of the proper use of energy absorbing poles and
longitudinal barriers will be provided to ensure properly tested
product designed for the site conditions are used.

SESSION 3 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


FRIDAY, MAY 8, 2020 Understand how crash cushions, terminals and transitions are
9:00-11:00 designed to work. Learn how to select the correct crash cushion or

SESSION 4 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


MONDAY, MAY 11, 2020 Gain an understanding how to design a safe work zone using
9:00-11:00 proper temporary traffic control plans based on the length of time
Introduction to the Work Zone for the project, the number of vehicles and the proximity of the
“Battlefield” - Fundamentals of Work work to the roadway. Use of the Manual of Traffic Control Devices
Zone Safety (MUTCD) will be discussed as well as an introduction to a variety of
work zone safety concepts, including portable barriers, Truck
Mounted Attenuators (TMA), portable crash cushions, flaggers,
proper horizontal and vertical signage and portable traffic signals.

SESSION 5 LEARNING OBJECTIVES:


WEDNESDAY, MAY 13, 2020 Clearly understand the safety benefits for the motorist, the truck

THURSDAY, MAY 21, 2020 Introduction to the eight stages of a road safety audit/inspection;
