Road Safety Audit

A Constructive Step toward Making Roads

Safer
• Road Safety Audit (RSA) is the assessment of the
existing or future road or intersection by an independent
and professional team. These are experienced
specialists who are trained in investigating road
accidents and road safety engineering.
• The focus of this team is to record and report on
potential road safety issues, to assess the deficiencies in
the road and traffic control systems that lead to
hazardous conditions.
The purpose of an RSA is to answer the
following questions:
• What elements of the road being evaluated are at risk
and might be a concern for safety?
• To what extent is the safety of the road users
compromised?
• Which road user is most vulnerable to the risk and in
what kind of situations?
• What are the possible solutions to eliminate or reduce
the identified safety concerns?
How Important is RSA ?
• Road Safety audits can be used to evaluate a project at
any stage, be it planning, engineering, design or
construction or even post- construction. It can be done
on a project of any size, from a small intersection to big
plans.
IRTE Conducting Road Safety Audit
• Institute of Road Traffic Education (IRTE) is committed
to making the Indian roads safe and efficient for all road
users. It not only educates the people about the road
safety rules in India but is also deeply involved in all
aspects of traffic engineering and training and helps
improve the road infrastructure of the country.
• IRTE’s audit team consists of traffic engineers who
undertake road safety audits on a wide range of highway
and road.
