Learning Outcome to be assessed

1. Critically review the use of non-destructive testing methods in the evaluation of structural concrete
under high levels of exposure.

4. Examine the methods available for project planning including programming and scheduling a
typical construction project.

Detail of the task

Part A – Advanced Materials

A concrete gravity dam, in Gampola (7.1268° N, 80.5647° E), Sri Lanka constructed in 1990 has
shown signs of cracking and surface erosion. This dam has been constructed across Kothmale Oya,
the longest tributary of Mahaweli river. The dam is used as an access road to the adjacent village
and downstream water demands are primarily met with this reservoir.

Figure 1: Extensive horizontal cracks on the downstream and upstream faces of the dam

Assuming you have been appointed as the structural health assessor of this structure determine the
root cause for these observed deteriorations, evaluating the exposure and the use of this structure.
Suggest a comprehensive repair plan to reinstate the structural competency of this structure and
evaluate its sustainability.

material. Occasional errors and irrelevancies expected but these
should be balanced by a good coverage and understanding of the
rest of the material.

40+ Satisfactory An acceptable presentation but style although generally

reasonable may be insecure. Even more inaccuracies and
irrelevancies to be expected but these must still be compensated
for by a general understanding of the subject.

20+ Weak An answer at this level must have several positive features but will
show various deficiencies; e.g. irrelevance, excess brevity or
incompleteness, rambling presentation, factual inaccuracies.
Mixed evidence to the depth of knowledge.

10+ Poor There may be a few positive points in the report but these will be
far outweighed by irrelevant or incorrect material. Evidence is
directionless and fragmentary.

0 Very Poor A token effort or a grossly irrelevant answer with little or nothing to
commend it. No convincing evidence of attainment of intended
learning outcomes.
