Learning Outcome to be assessed
1. Critically review the use of non-destructive testing methods in the evaluation of structural concrete
under high levels of exposure.
4. Examine the methods available for project planning including programming and scheduling a
typical construction project.
A concrete gravity dam, in Gampola (7.1268° N, 80.5647° E), Sri Lanka constructed in 1990 has
shown signs of cracking and surface erosion. This dam has been constructed across Kothmale Oya,
the longest tributary of Mahaweli river. The dam is used as an access road to the adjacent village
and downstream water demands are primarily met with this reservoir.
Figure 1: Extensive horizontal cracks on the downstream and upstream faces of the dam
Assuming you have been appointed as the structural health assessor of this structure determine the
root cause for these observed deteriorations, evaluating the exposure and the use of this structure.
Suggest a comprehensive repair plan to reinstate the structural competency of this structure and
evaluate its sustainability.

Part B – Construction Site Management
Sathosa Motors Limited is a full subsidiary of Access Engineering PLC. Recently Access Engineering
PLC was awarded a design and build contract from Sathosa Motors to design and construct a two
story building and associated facility in Vauxhall Street in Colombo 02. The building is mainly for the
office and maintenance and repair works of its own brand Isuzu trucks and SUVs.
The main and key activities of the projects are
1. Design works of main building and stores.
2. Excavation and Cylinder Foundations
3. Concrete works
4. Post tension works
5. Masonry Works
6. Roof structure works
7. Plumbing and sanitation works
8. Installation of elevators
[30 marks]
2. Show your detailed calculations for five number of the key activities. The calculations should
be clear and logical. You should also ensure that the resources that are chosen ( e.g gang
sizes, plant numbers are realistic)
6500CIVSL Page 3 of 9
(10 marks)
3. Prepare the complete method statement for the post tensioning works (setting
out/mobilization of required equipment/required man power/arrangement of steel and others
and risk for the complete pilling works to be discussed, further quality and health and safety
aspects also to be added to the report) [10 marks]

What you should hand in
Part A Part B
Part A of the assignment should be completed Part B of the assignment should be completed
as an individual work. in groups of two.
The assignments should include a front cover, contents page and bibliography. All assignment pages
should be numbered.

Background and exposure 6 Quantitative details ( weather, soil
leading to the observed conditions, flooding events, traffic load)
deteriorations should be provided with citations
Literature review on cracking of 10 Literature based findings on causes for
concrete dams cracking concrete gravity dams, impact
from the exposure to aggravate the
damages and at least one case study of
similar nature should be presented.
Root cause for the observed 6 Out of the possible causes for cracking of
deterioration and justification it concrete dams, the most probable root
with the use of exposure related cause/s should be presented and the
details and literature based particular cause/s should be justified
evidences considering the site specific, exposure
related and literature based evidences.
Citations should be provided.

NDT and structural health 8 NDT, PDT or any relevant structural health
assessing methods to verify the assessing methods should be presented
root cause/s and extent of the with citations. Along with the suggested
damage with necessary in text method, justification for suggesting it
citations should be presented.
Repair methods to reinstate the 8 Should include minimum 5 repair plans
structural competency each elaborates under key steps involved
in the repair, cost, ease of use, labor
requirement and durability. Citations
should be provided for each repair plan
Most coherent repair plan for 8 Out of the possible repair options
this dam and sustainability and suggested under the previous section, the
life cycle costing aspects of your most appropriate repair plan should be
suggestion - delineated. The selection should be
evaluated considering its durability for the
remaining design life of the dam,
applicability within present context, life
cycle costing and sustainability aspects.
Currency of references 4 Number, composition of the reference list
and date of published will be considered in
awarding the marks. Minimum 10
references should be included in the list.
Special Notes
Students should prepare 2000+ 10% word reports (excluding the table of content, list of figures,
tables, references and annexures). Exceeding the prescribed word count would lead to lose 10 marks
from the aggregate marks you earn.
Peer reviewed journals, conferences proceedings, books are recommended to be used as sources
for data extraction and excessive use of internet based sources (web sites, online lecture notes) are
discouraged for this submission.

Item 02
A detailed and logical calculation should be provided. It should be easy to follow.
10
Students should choose sensible resources that are both economical and practical
to achieve.
Item 03

Assessment Criteria
20+ Weak An answer at this level must have several positive features but will
show various deficiencies; e.g. irrelevance, excess brevity or
incompleteness, rambling presentation, factual inaccuracies.
Mixed evidence to the depth of knowledge.
10+ Poor There may be a few positive points in the report but these will be
far outweighed by irrelevant or incorrect material. Evidence is
directionless and fragmentary.
0 Very Poor A token effort or a grossly irrelevant answer with little or nothing to
commend it. No convincing evidence of attainment of intended
learning outcomes.

Extenuating Circumstances
If something serious happens that means that you will not be able to complete this assignment, you
need to contact the module leader as soon as possible. There are a number of things that can be
done to help, such as extensions, waivers and alternative assessments, but we can only arrange
