ECC 584 INTEGRATED DESIGN PROJECT

Capstone Project

1.0 Introduction
Integrated Design Project (IDP) expose students to engineering design and practices in real
projects. The course includes complex engineering problems and design systems,
components, and processes integrating core areas and meeting specified needs with
appropriate considerations for public health and system, cultural, societal, and environmental.
There are three continuous assessments in IDP: (1) Capstone Project (Group project) 50%
and (2) Case Study Project (Individual project) 10%, and (3) Common Test 40%. This
document provides assessment details for Capstone Project.

At the end of the Capstone Project, the students should be able to:
i. Define and formulate solutions to complex design problem associate with building and
infrastructural design.
ii. Use the design standards with consideration of real-world constraint in carry out design
and detailing for building, foundation and infrastructural works, such as earthwork,
sewerage, drainage, road and water reticulation.
iii. Practice effective engineering management for the given project.

4.0 Tasks in Capstone Project

The capstone project consists of both group and individual assessments. This course requires
students participating in the design of a real integrated project in the construction industry and
capstone project. Students review the background information of the site and the neighboring
sites. They define and formulate the solutions to the design problems. Students write
technical report or proposal on their approach to address problems and pursue efforts to
develop the proposed solutions with considerations of real-world constraints. The course also
exposes the students to an integrated design experience with the team members as role-
playing planners, designers, users, constructors, operators and maintenance community
where different points of views are promoted, fostering co-ordination and cooperation among
team members. Students will carry out scopes of work in Structure, Geotechnical,
Infrastructure and Construction Management. The detailed tasks are outlined in Table 1.

APPENDIX C CAPSTONE PROJECT REPORT GUIDELINE

This guidelines aims to help the students in preparing the report for the Capstone Project
(Project 1) in the course Integrated Design Project (ECC584).

Students are expected to submit ONE technical report in FOUR (4) main parts for the
evaluators (i.e. respective lecturer at the submission day stated in lesson plan and panel industry
during the presentation day). Part 1 contains design solutions for superstructure for building
design, Part 2 for foundation design, Part 3 for Infrastructures design whereas Part 4 contains
for construction management.

The contents for Part 1 to Part 4 are detailed in the following sections. The students are strongly
advised to provide solutions based on the scopes in the latest evaluation form for Capstone
Project. The format of the report (i.e. size and type of file, divider, font size, font type, paper
etc) is free.
