Human touch

E very Autumn the heart of yachting beats hard at the great Yacht Shows of southern
France and that heartbeat is reverberated in nearly the entire world of boatbuilding.
New creations, trends, suggestions, contradictions swirl together in a huge tank producing
extreme energy. The human touch spills over in the process and, like a centrifugal force,
makes the world go round and spin forward. This is what makes those events unique and
sense-awakening. We always return home richer after each Show, brimming with creative
spirit, and at the same time younger, since we have touched the future. The truly successful
Yacht Shows are neither a haggling place nor one-dimensional shop windows where ves-
sels simply stand in line. They are large ideoports and fertile communication platforms that
contribute to the process of creative ferment and promote several different markets. The
layout of Yacht Shows is reminiscent of medieval towns: boats arranged in the center like

in the process and, like a In practice, the participants - yards, designers, retailers, inventors – become directors for a
centrifugal force, makes few days. They present their creations and do their bit in the evolution of the industry. At the

involved. They express their opinion, assess, praise and reward, playing a leading role in the
overall process.

Personally, I have never felt fed up with yacht shows or events, either as an exhibitor or
as a professional. I always leave the exhibition area to catch my flight and my suitcase is
always overflowing. I carry along the conversations with the people who designed a boat,
or a new gadget, or a futuristic water toy or some complex software. I carry along the joy
of human touch.

It is that exhilaration, that kind of luggage which will fill the pages of the autumn issue. More
specifically, you will enjoy a snapshot of the leading events taking place at the French Riviera:
the Yachting Festival in Cannes and the Monaco Yacht Show in the Principality of Monaco,
the capital of luxury and super yachts. Two events that complement each other, outlining
the middle and large-scale class in Cannes and the custom builds in Monaco. At the same
time, this issue is a tribute to the unique creations of eminent designers which we had the
opportunity to see from up close. What is more, interesting stories follow like concentric cir-
cles, as, for example, the contribution of sailing to the construction of the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation. We also attended important events and had interesting talks in Greece, starting
with the restless and creative Marina Vernicos, and followed by Vassilis Bourtsalas, the man
behind the Greek “Sur Mesure”. All of the above share common ground; that of human touch.

M o r e o n c l i ma t e
ME T EO r ep or t Defined as the long-term weather conditions of an area,
climate is determined by examining the weather data of the area.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) defines the period for

averaging the various meteorological parameters defining climate to
be 30 years. The arithmetic average over a 30-year period is said to be
a “normal”. The interannual variations with respect to this “normal” are
called “anomalies”.

In the majority of modern climatic studies the “normal” values are the
averages of the 30-year period from January 1st, 1961 to December
31st, 1990. The climate of an area depends on altitude, latitude,
proximity to mountains and to the sea and also the land to water ratio
(i.e. islands or locations close to sea or lake borders).

These parameters remain practically constant for very large time

periods. However, these parameters change within a time span
of millions of years due to the Earth’s plate tectonics. Other
parameters affecting climate change more quickly, such
as the thermohaline circulation of the oceans, density
and type of vegetation and, of course, the so-called
atmospheric gases. Changes of these parameters
result in global warming or global cooling.

Drowned
world
Museo Atlantico is Europe’s first
underwater contemporary art
museum, situated just off the
coast of Lanzarote, Canary
Island, Spain.

34
words BY ELENA MATHIOPOULOU | Photos Jason Decaires Taylor/www.jasondecairesteylor.com

The first phase of this unique museum was de-

ployed by internationally acclaimed British sculptor
Jason deCaires Taylor in February 2016. Taylor cre-
ates underwater living installations, offering view-
ers mysterious, ephemeral encounters and fleeting
glimmers of another world where art develops from
the effects of nature on the efforts of man. Museo
Atlantico is a unique museum featuring a series
of sculptural installations 12m beneath the ocean’s
surface. It is accessible to snorkellers, divers and
observers through glass bottom boats, and is due
to be completed by December 2016 as a total of 10
galleries are expected to be ready by year-end.
This museum is the first of its kind in Europe and
the Atlantic Ocean, and is expected to stand the test
of time to last hundreds of years. But, interestingly,
as the local marine life adopts the artificial reef
as their own, the characteristics of the sculptures
themselves will change.

Of the current lot that has already been placed

at the bottom of the ocean, the piece called The
Raft of Lampedusa — a sculpted boat carrying 13
refugees — is the most striking. The artwork is a
modern take on Géricault’s 1818 painting The Raft
of the Medusa. By situating his sculptures in clear,
shallow, barren areas, Taylor not only replicates
the conditions necessary to stimulate coral growth
but also secures that divers, snorkellers and those
aboard glass bottom boats will have the opportunity
to view his works.
experience

The concrete figures of the sculpture called The Rubicon represent

the desperate refugees, selfie-taking tourists and a hybrid of flora
and humans that will be transformed over time and indoctrinated
into the Lanzarote underwater ‘society’ as do people above on land.
This is the first of its kind in Europe and the Atlantic Ocean, and is
expected to stand the test of time to last hundreds of years. But
interestingly, as the local marine life adopts the artificial reef as their
own, the characteristics of the sculptures themselves will change.

Seas of art

With over 20 years of diving experience under his belt, Taylor is

also an award winning underwater photographer, famous for his
dramatic images, which capture the metamorphosing effects of
the ocean on his evolving sculptures.
In 2006, he founded and created the world’s first underwater
sculpture park. Situated off the west coast of Grenada in the West
Indies it is now listed as one of the Top 25 Wonders of the World
by National Geographic and was instrumental in the creation of a
National Marine Protected Area by the local government.
Following on in 2009 he co-founded MUSA (Museo Subacuático
de Arte), a monumental museum with a collection of over 500 of
his sculptural works, submerged off the coast of Cancun, Mexico;
described by Forbes as one of the world’s most unique travel
destinations. Both these ambitious, permanent public works have
a practical, functional aspect, facilitating positive interactions be-
tween people and fragile underwater habitats while at the same
relieving pressure on natural resources.
Taylor’s art is like no other, a paradox of creation, constructed to
be assimilated by the ocean and transformed from inert objects
into living breathing coral reefs, portraying human intervention
as both positive and life-encouraging. Numerous publications
and documentaries have featured his extraordinary work, yet
nothing can quite do justice to the ephemeral nature of his art,
for each actual visit to his sites is both unique and subject to the
dynamic, fluctuating environment of the ocean. His pioneering
public art projects are not only examples of successful marine
conservation, but works of art that seek to encourage environ-
mental awareness, instigate social change and lead us to appre-
ciate the breathtaking natural beauty of the underwater world.

Mondomarine M70 Arte

by Stefano Inglese Vafiadis

38
Edited BY Alex Galanakis | Photos Guillaume Plisson

Mondomarine has unveiled the M70 Arte

project, the new 70m yacht by designer
Stefano Inglese Vafiadis of Giorgio
Vafiadis & Associates.

Mondomarine is pleased to present one of the greatest

concepts ever developed by the shipyard, the new 70 m “Arte”,
which has been inspired by the beauty, creativity and simplicity
of modern art. The lines that define the exteriors are robust
and minimal. They downplay the volumes (thanks also to the
extended use of glass) giving the impression of a much sleeker
boat. The yacht’s focal points are the vast beach club which is
in dialogue with the aft side of the hull, creating the distinctive
transom silhouette, and the wheel house located on the bridge
deck inside the glass shell. The glass shell is one of the boat’s
main characteristics. It gives the impression that the height of
the profile is much lower, thanks to the fact that the eyes stop
on the last white stripe below it.

The Exteriors

Arte features a large set of exterior accommodation areas,

starting with the splendid beach club and reaching a climax on
the fly with the panoramic lounge and Jacuzzi and the owner’s
external salon with the scenic pool. The fly area is also adorned
with an interesting design element: the mast supports. Two
distinctive grey mullions are located on the bridge deck, holding
the dome antennas on the sides, even though you would expect
to see them directly on the fly bridge (like on most boats). Thanks
to this feature, it looks as if Arte’s profile finishes one deck
below, leaving enough space to the guests to make the best use
of the fly area. The beach club is well connected to the point of
entry and the guest area by means of a straight corridor that
crosses the garage and the engine room. Thanks to this very
practical solution, circulation inside the boat is very efficient.
There are two salons on the main and upper deck, both of which
feature spectacular round dining areas, one with an almost fully
retractable roof and the other one fully equipped to offer the most
unbelievable culinary experiences. On the bridge deck we find a
gym and a spa area on the aft side, whereas on the fore there is
the fully equipped wheelhouse.

Galactica Super Nova

70m Fast Displacement
At 70 metres overall, Galactica Super Nova is the largest Heesen built to date. With
an impressive top speed of 30 knots, the aluminium Fast Displacement vessel is
one of the fastest superyachts in her class in the world.

Beach Club

Galactica Super Nova’s head-turning exterior design

is by Espen Øino, who worked on a pre-established
technical platform provided by Heesen. Her profile em-
bodies Heesen’s DNA, but also introduces new design
elements that make her one of the brightest stars in the
Heesen galaxy.

What makes Galactica Super Nova different is how she

combines high speed with long range and low fuel con-
sumption. At cruising speed the yacht is able to voyage
comfortably and economically for over 4,000 nautical
miles with no compromise on luxury. When combined
with fixed pitch propellers and a Rolls Royce central
booster jet, Galactica Super Nova seems not only fast,
but also highly manoeuvrable in all sea conditions and
extremely quiet. Fast Displacement Hull Form reduces
resistance by up to 20 per cent, dramatically decreasing
the amount of power required to achieve a given speed.

The shaded sun deck is shielded from the wind by wrap-

around, sliding panels for protection at anchor and while
underway.

44
Guests can lounge on sun pads, sip cocktails at the
bar, dine around the extendable table, or converse
while sitting on the bespoke club chairs and sofas.
There is minimal divide between the exterior and
the interior. Thanks to glass sliding doors that act as
a wind break, guests can move freely between the
covered lounge area and the open decks fore and aft.
The foredeck serves as a touch-and-go helipad
or as a lounging space for sunbathing. At night, it
transforms into an outdoor cinema with a portable
4 x 2.25m screen mounted on removable carbon
pillars for a crisp, high-definition visual experience.
State-of-the-art CAT Marine speakers deliver truly
immersive sound. The aft terrace of the bridge
deck is combined with the sky lounge to provide 92
square metres of space, ideal for al fresco dining and
conversations in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere
overlooking the sea.

THE INTERIORS

Galactica Super Nova’s classic-contemporary interior is a

paragon of elegance and comfort. Designer Sander Sinot
worked closely with the owners to create a design that perfectly
suits their lifestyle and taste. The main saloon comprises three
distinct areas: a welcoming conversation zone with low coffee
tables, the semi-circular library with a mesmerizing open
fireplace, and the formal dining area. Twelve guests can enjoy
formal dining in a warm and inviting environment surrounded
by low cabinetry in lacewood and contrasting wengé.
Both the bedroom and the ensuite bathroom with floor-
to-ceiling onyx panels extend across the full beam of the
yacht. The separate bathroom entrances and vanity units are
connected by a central walk-in rain shower. The master suite,
an oasis of space and calm is set forward on the main deck. It
is accessed via the owner’s private study.
All the guests’ cabins feature luxurious en-suite bathrooms,
lined floor-to-ceiling with marble. Sumptuous guest
staterooms – two doubles and two twin singles – are located
on the lower deck. The VIP suite is situated on the upper deck,
adjacent to the sky lounge, and it has a private study and a
lounge that doubles as a private staff stateroom.

BAGLIETTO m FAST

The Cannes Yachting Festival was the venue of choice for the premiere of the latest
creation by Baglietto. Developed in cooperation with Francesco Paszkowski
Design, the Baglietto 46 m Fast, a combination of tradition and innovation,
confirms the love for the Fast line by the La Spezia-based boat builder.

cutting-edge Telemar onboard equipment

Drawing inspiration from the sleek aluminium planing yachts

that have made the brand famous all over the world, the new
46 m FAST stands out for her streamlined bow and rakish
lines reflecting her strong personality. She also boasts an
imposing stern with hawses, thereby maintaining the family
bonds with the previous Baglietto yachts. The trapeze-
shaped windows in the hull alternate with rectangular ones
arranged on two different levels. They enhance the slender
shape of the hull, giving a more contemporary touch to the
yacht's captivating outer profile.

The interiors

Also penciled by Francesco Paszkowski Design together

with architect Margherita Casprini, the interiors feature
impressive volumes rarely found on the planing yachts of this
size that are available on the market. The warm shades of
rosewood used for lining and floors alternate with the colder
white lacquered ceilings and side panels across the entire
boat, resulting in truly refined and stylish contemporary
interiors. The layout is classic, with the full beam master
cabin located forward on the main deck and the guest area
nested on the lower deck.
A conversation area welcomes guests at the stern of the
main deck. A central cabinet at the entrance of the main
salon creates a kind of ‘filter’ between the outside and the
inside, gradually introducing guests to the indoor areas.

Perini Navi 38Μ

Dahlak
We went onboard Dahlak, the latest launch in the expanding Perini Navi fleet. With hull
lines by Philippe Briand and built entirely on site at the company’s Picchiotti shipyard
in La Spezia, the new yacht is a sister ship to the award-winning P2 launched in 2008.
sailing MODEL

The yacht’s exterior styling by Philippe Briand

is designed to highlight the yacht’s racy and
dynamic character

Dahlak is a considerable step up in size, power and

complexity in comparison to the owner’s previous yacht,
a sailing catamaran 60 feet in length overall. Keen to
enjoy the experience of skippering the 38m yacht him-
self, the owner studied hard to obtain his RYA Yacht-
master—an unusual feat, even for such a passionate
and hands-on sailor. “The owner insisted that Dahlak
is a family boat in every sense of the word,” says Burak
Akgul, Managing Director of Sales & Marketing. “By that
he meant not only his own family, but also the Perini
Navi family. We feel enormously privileged that this
owner trusted us to build his new sailing yacht to ex-
plore the world in complete safety and comfort.” Dahlak
and P2 share the same rig configuration and basic naval
architecture, including a near-vertical bow stretching
the waterline length to the maximum and a high-aspect
ratio sail plan for fast upwind sailing.

Construction

The new yacht is constructed entirely of Sealium alumin-

ium alloy, whereas P2 had a composite superstructure.
She boasts several technical innovations that illustrate
Perini Navi’s ongoing commitment to providing owners
with the latest technology that enhances performance, sail
handling and onboard comfort.

66
Exterior Styling

The yacht’s exterior styling by Philippe Briand aims to highlight

the yacht’s racy and dynamic character. Perini Navi worked with
the designer to raise the height of the superstructure by 15cm for
a more comfortable and luminous interior without affecting the
svelte exterior profile. The resulting sense of space to spare is
enhanced by the strip skylight running the length of the coachroof
that floods the deckhouse with natural light (all the glazing in the
salon has been specially treated to filter damaging and heat-
producing IR and UV rays). The cockpit has versatile dining and
seating options and is well protected by a deployable dodger and
bimini top, while the generous transom garage can house a 16-foot
Castoldi jet tender—quite an achievement on a 38m sailing yacht.

The interior layout

The interior layout can accommodate up to eight guests in a

full-beam owner’s stateroom and two en-suite cabins (the
forward guest cabin is ideal for children featuring Pullman
bunks and a single bed on slide rails to create a double). Else-
where the owner requested minor modifications. The galley,
for example, has been extended by one frame and includes a
serving hatch, while the deckhouse dining and seating area,
upholstered in fresh cotton fabrics by Zimmer+Rohde, is now
separated from the navigation station by the waist-height
joinery. The well-appointed and spacious crew quarters can ac-
commodate up to 6 members of crew in three en-suite cabins.

Easy handling

To further meet the owner’s brief for fast and easy sail han-
dling, in addition to the Harken deck winches, the yacht features
three semi-automatic electric captive winches engineered by
Perini Navi and a carbon fibre furling boom. Providing per-
formance and safety in all sea conditions, the captive winches
and boom are synchronized by the Perini Navi Automated Sail
Handling System to dramatically improve furling and deploy-
ment speeds, while significantly reducing the time for tacking
and jibing compared to the previous P2 generation.
sailing MODEL

Burak Akgul, Managing Director of

Sales & Marketing at Perini Navi
Group, welcomed us onboard.

On P2 the manual sail handling controls were located between the

twin helm wheels in the middle of the cockpit, whereas the automated

photo skipperondeck.gr
system aboard Dahlak has been integrated into the carbon fibre helm
stations to be within easy reach when the yacht is sailed single-handed.
The lightweight hull and widespread use of composite components,
including the 51.40m mast by Southern Spars with composite EC6+
standing rigging, provide a displacement of 162t.

The Finn dinghy carbon mast is one of the most

important things to consider when aiming at a good
performance in a regatta. Finn sailors know it and spend
numerous hours –and money- trying to find the ideal
mast for them. Given the very strict class specifications,
mast builders have a lot of R&D and work ahead of them
until they finally construct the fastest mast tailored to
the “sailing profile” of a particular sailor. But how does
all this connect to the brand new Stavros Niarchos
Foundation Cultural Center in Athens? How do years
of R&D and practice at sea connect to this masterpiece
of architecture? The answer is simple: Behind every
masterpiece there is always a sailor.
project

The entire building and the mast, in particular, have become a landmark visible from far out in the Saronic Gulf

78
How it all began Installation of the mast on the SNFCC energy canopy

The story starts at the early stages of the construction. Gianni Botteon,
project manager at Salini&Impregilo, was assigned a huge task: to
build Athens’ new Cultural Center based on the designs of the famous
architect Renzo Piano. The project involved lots of stress, due to the
very tight deadlines, and special attention to detail. But it is detail that
eventually makes the difference.
Trying to maintain a work-life balance, Gianni joined the Match Race
Academy of the Yacht Club of Greece to sail during the weekends.
Being Italian, he soon teamed up with another Italian and a Spaniard
working in Greece. They started training together and getting better
as time went by. Then, they started participating in graded match
race events. One day, while chatting over a beer after training with his
coach Akis Tsarouchis, Gianni shared a concern:
- Akis the building that I have to build...It is supposed to have a mast
on top.
- A lot of buildings have a mast. So what?
- Yes, but this is a huge one. I’m talking about a 40m tall mast which
has to conform to certain flexing specifications! On top. No support
whatsoever. It has to stand there without support. Where am I going to
get that thing built?
- 40 metres? Without anything to hold it?

Looking around us there were many boats with carbon masts. Akis’s
suggestion seemed feasible over beer: A mast-maker would definitely
have a mould long enough to construct the mast. Nevertheless, even
over beer, the engineering concerns were obvious: a mast without
support, 10 times taller than that of a Finn dinghy, required to bend in a
specific way. That would certainly take a lot of effort to build.

Constructing a landmark

As this would be a complex project, a common language of

communication seemed a benefit, if not a prerequisite, for getting
things done. Over the next few days, Akis provided Gianni with a
contact in Italy to kick off a discussion. And that’s where the journey
to the realm of innovation began: Enrico Franchetti of MaxSpar was
eventually assigned the demanding undertaking.
Even though the technology and the knowhow were there and
readily available, it nevertheless took tons of R&D and several hours
of simulation to understand the behavior of the huge mast about
to be built. On top of it all, the mast had to conform to additional
specifications: It had to be UV proof to withstand the often fierce Greek
sun, lightning proof, in case of a storm, and, of course, to be able to
withstand strong winds. Yet, everything comes at a cost: The total
amount spent on the mast was 300k. Not much, though, considering
the overall budget for the project.
Knowing the cost and effort it took to build and install it, one could easily
ask: What is it made for? What does it do? Does it have a practical
purpose or is it just one of Renzo Piano’s design elements? Well, the
mast is there to point towards the direction of the wind.
Now, Gianni, an engineer, could have solved this by simply hoisting
a flag on it which would have helped the budget. But really,
who can put a price tag on art? Isn’t Athens richer by having an
architectural masterpiece? Aren’t Greeks richer just by having a
brand new cultural center?
The mast on the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center was
constructed using the same technology inherent in the construction
of carbon masts for sailing boats. It is now standing there, proud
and tall, on top of the building, pointing towards the direction of the
wind. The entire building and the mast, in particular, have become a
landmark visible from far out in the Saronic Gulf, where sailors train
and race; where most regattas take place. It won’t be long before WATCH THE Video
sailors seize the opportunity to prepare for wind shifts when racing
just by looking at the mast.
project

The cultural gate A true gem, a tribute to culture, tourism and the environment, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation
Cultural Center is an ambitious vision near completion, a bequest of the Greek cultural heritage to
the future. Designed by world-renowned architect Renzo Piano, this multifunctional environmentally
sustainable center of learning, art and entertainment consists of the “Stavros Niarchos” Park, the
new premises of the National Library of Greece (NLG) and the Greek National Opera (GNO). The
Opera, with a capacity of 1,400 spectators and a massive stage capable of hosting two performances
over the same weekend by keeping the sets in place, is as awe-inspiring as the building of the Public
and Academic Library that hosts a tower of 2 million books that finally found a home in the Cultural
Center. As for the verdant gardens spreading over 210,000 m2, a 30m wide and 400m long channel
of sea water adorned with sailing boats steals the show. There is no doubt that this is a monumental
work of hope and culture brought to the Greek society which now needs it more than ever.

Domaine
Biblia Chora
In 1998, Vassilis Tsaktsarlis and Vangelis Gerovassiliou
created an organic vineyard which is situated on the
slopes of Mount Pangeon at Kokkinochori, Kavala, and
currently extends to over 350 acres. Within this stretch
of land is the modern winery in which the wines of the
domaine are produced. The philosophy of winemaking
here focuses on the production of high quality wine that is
bound by the ecosystem of Mount Pangeon and expresses
the uniqueness of the natural surroundings. The modern
winery, located in the middle of the vineyard, includes
areas for vinification, bottling, aging in both barrels and
bottles, wine-tasting, welcoming and hosting visitors,
as well as a multi-purpose hall (for conferences and
presentations). All of the areas reflect the good taste and

Semeli Winery
Founded in 1979 with a view to creating Greek wines
of exceptional quality, the Semeli Winery is located
at a high altitude, amidst the low yielding vineyards
of the hilly Koutsi region, one of the most celebrated
“crus” of legendary Nemea in the Peloponnese.
In this unique grape-growing microclimate crop
levels are low, concentration of flavors high, and
fruit and natural acids in positive balance. A key
process at the vineyard estate is winemaking using
gravity. The gravity-fed winery was designed to
take full advantage of the terrain’s sloping gradient.
Today, Nemea is Greece’s most vibrant red wine
appellation, relying exclusively on the high quality
and hugely attractive ‘Agiorgitiko’ variety. The
location combines natural beauty and easy access to
cultural and historical sites, while at Semeli Estate
tasting becomes an experience with elegant multi-
purpose rooms available for wine tasting, corporate
and social events. The winery also has a large

with an aim to initiating the public to the magic of winemaking. Native and
foreign grape varieties coexist in this vineyard, the largest in Greece today,
with white varieties, Savatiano, Malagouzia and Roditis prevailing. However,
red varieties such as Agiorgitiko and Merlot are also successfully cultivated,

Estate Chrisohoou
Close to Naoussa, at the region of Strantza, on the southeastern
slopes of Vermion, is the heart of the vineyards of Estate Chrisohoou.
This family-run estate produces wines treated with passion and
tradition. In these privately owned vineyards various white and
red varieties are cultivated: the renowned "Xinomavro Naoussa",
recognized as V.Q.P.R.D. red wine since 1971, from which a white
wine is produced with the method of "Blanc de Noir", the noted
French varieties Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and
Ugni Blanc and a very old, almost unknown, local white grape,
the "Priknadi". The Estate Chrisohoou is built in purely traditional
style. Taking a small tour in the winery premises you arrive at the
production and bottling area. These areas feature stainless tanks and
modern bottling machinery, whereas the temperature and humidity

Tsantali Rapsani
Hidden on the slopes of the highest mountain in Greece, Rapsani,
the place where the 12 gods of Olympus chose to live, is the
perfect destination for the adventurous wine aficionado. This new
approach to wine tourism lives up to the terroir, the wines, the
long tradition and the amazing stories of Olympus. The "Rapsani

the Tsantali company, includes a climb with 4x4 from 200m to
an altitude of 800m on the eastern slopes of Mount Olympus, the
V.Q.P.R.D. zone of Rapsani, following a route through locations
of exquisite beauty. Scattered small vineyards -often extremely
hard to reach- will pop up on the way while, during the short

Alpha Estate
Located at the northwest part of Greece, Amyndeon,
in the region of Florina, the privately owned vineyard
of the Alpha Estate combines an ancient local variety
with a noble international one, following the demands of
modern markets and the spirit of progress. A popular
blend of Syrah/Merlot with ungrafted Xinomavro is the
estate's red flagship, while a classic barrel of fermented
Sauvignon Blanc and several other wines of limited
production complete the estate's varietal portfolio. The
winemakers’ philosophy is “absolute respect to the
ecosystem, the vine grower and the wine lover”. The
most important area of the winery is the underground
cellar which houses, all through the year in optimal
conditions, the oak casks where Alpha Estate's wines
are aged. A specially designed path has been thought
out for visitors in order to avoid disturbing the quiet of
wine ageing inside the casks. The tasting room is the
point where design ends and pleasure begins.

Alpine Harmony
Chetzeron Hotel, Crans-Montana, Switzerland
The super stylish Alpine hotel Chetzeron, perfectly positioned high above
the Valais resort of Crans-Montana, is a unique example of a building’s
complete harmonisation with its surroundings, boasting a cozy interior
awash with old-world charm.
Design

An abandoned gondola station and attached restaurant have been transformed into the breathtaking hotel Chetzeron

Chetzeron, a former gondola station and restau-
rant converted into a hotel and now a member of
Design Hotels™, is so high up in Crans Montana
that the expression “away from the crowds” takes
on an entirely new meaning here. For one, you
can only reach the hotel by foot, ski, or snowmo-
bile (a snowcat service is also available in winter).
At 2,112 meters above sea level, the 16 rooms and
suites have panoramic views of the Rhone Valley
and the majestic Alpine peaks, from Matterhorn
to Mont Blanc.

Above the larches, guests at the Chetzeron have the

unique pleasure of enjoying the last sunrays as they
gently kiss the slopes. There are plenty of perches
from which to take in the skiers and surrounding
splendor, including terraces on three levels that
are dotted with hammocks and sun loungers; an
outdoor pool; private or public bars, and the ”refined
alpine” restaurant that serves local and seasonal
cuisine paired with regional Valais wines.

Set in stone

An abandoned gondola station and attached res-

taurant have been transformed into the breath-
taking hotel Chetzeron. Covered with natural local
stone, the building’s exterior at once blends in
with its environment and is a striking juxtaposi-
tion to its luxuriously cozy interiors. Generous
windows let the nature flow in. The idea belongs
to Swiss Lebanese hotelier Sami Lamaa, who
made it real with the help of Lausanne-based
architects Actescollectifs.
By showcasing this former gondola station’s large
concrete porticos and original stone walls, this
new hotel is awash with old-world charm. The
public spaces, such as the popular après-ski bar
and restaurant next to the lobby, feature cozy fur-
niture and special lighting to create comfy nooks.
The cavernous mouth of the station has been
closed off with glass and panelled with oak to
form an airy lounge area with breathtaking views.
The windows of each room and suite frame spec-
tacular views of the majestic mountains.
Design

The luxe interiors contrast rough materials

like stone against plush bedding and furniture,
resulting in alpine interiors far from traditional
but very much in keeping with the surround-
ings. Large glass windows and a welcom-
ing window seat invite you to lose yourself
in contemplation of the mountains and the
exceptional surrounding nature. The colours
and decoration reflect simplicity; each piece
of furniture has been specially designed for
Chetzeron. Even the bathrooms have a pano-
ramic view thanks to the skilful use of screens.
The true scene-stealers are the expansive ter-
race areas, overlooking the Rhone valley; fitted
out with picnic tables, loungers and sheep-
skins, even a pool, they are the perfect spot to
laze away a sunny day.

Eco-friendly
50 m² of solar panels to heat the water

eco-environment whilst not compromising 200 m² of photovoltaic panels for electricity production
any concessions to comfort or well-being.

in August 1939 when Karolos Zonaras, a

the corner of Panepistimiou and Voukour-

Brand new VW Tiguan

Extreme
makeover
Since the debut of the first generation of Tiguans in 2007
more than 2.8 million cars have been launched into the world
market, making it one of VW’s best sellers. The overall face-
lift in the new generation models is simply hard to miss.
owner’s car

Despite the larger dimensions, the weight has been reduced by an average
of 82 kilos, as a result of the new MQB platform

110
It’s the lines of the front part and the LED technology
lights, the larger dimensions, the different, more
striking body which add that feel of robustness. The
new Tiguan is 60 mm longer, reaching a total of 4,486
mm. Its wheelbase reaches 2,681 mm. Being 30mm
wider and 33mm shorter, the height of the wheelbase
is the only feature that has been reduced.

Despite the larger dimensions, the weight has been

reduced by an average of 82 kilos, as a result of the
new MQB platform, the quintessence of the Passat.
At the same time, the increased dimensions result in
an improved interior compared to previous models.
For instance, the rear passengers’knees enjoy 29
mm extra legroom. The rear seat is asymmetrically
divided and can be moved along a rail for a distance
of 180 mm. When the seat is fully back, the boot
capacity is 520 litres, whereas by moving the rear
seat forward, the capacity reaches 615 litres. When
fully folded, the luggage room can hold 1,615 litres.

Moving to engines, the new Tiguan will be available

in 8 different engine options. The TSI petrol engines
include four models: the 1.4 TSI 125ps and 150ps, the
2.0 TSI 180 and the 2.0 TSI 220 ps, while there are also
four TDI diesel engine options generating 115 to 240
hp. There will be versions with all-wheel drive and
front-wheel drive.
owner’s car

All-wheel drive versions feature longer-

travel suspension (electronic chassis
control-DCC) and the new 4MOTION Active
Control (featuring 5th generation Haldex),
which allows the driver to adjust the
all-wheel drive to his driving needs more
effectively. The off-road option features a
different front bumper providing a better
approach angle. Last but not least, let’s
not forget the R-Line with a sportier look
inside out. The new SUV’s towing capacity
is also notable, reaching 2,500 kilos.
The new safety systems include an
Automatic Post-Collision Braking System
and the Front Assist Ambient Monitoring
System with City Emergency Braking and
Pedestrian Monitoring. Even though these
systems are usually part of premium
car safety equipment, they are all part of
Tiguan’s standard version.
If the first Tiguan was VW’s way of showing
us how an SUV can combine comfort, top
performance and off-road capabilities, the
new generation raises the bar even higher
as far as luxury and high-tech applications
normally found in premium cars are
concerned.
