1. Standards

a. Do-First: Ask students what components make up a country and its culture. Have
students write a list of as many components as possible. (5 minutes) Then go
over their lists and write the components of the board for them to use as a
reference during the rest of the lesson. (10 minutes) About 15 minutes total.
b. Mini Lesson: Watch a short video on the five basic forms of government. Have
students take notes as the video plays. (11 minutes). Do a quick review to make
sure students were paying attention, pick a student at random via blind pinpoint
on seating chart and ask them to explain one of the forms of government
mentioned in the video. If the student is unable to answer, allow other students a
chance. Answer any questions students have in regard to forms of government.
c. Guided Practice: Divide class into five predetermined groups and explain the
assignment, writing the directions on the board next to the list of country
components. Each group will create a made up country that is governed by the
form of government assigned to them. Give each group a poster board and a
handful of markers for them to write the following components on and present to
the class next time we meet. Each country should have:

5. Reflection: Through this lesson, 8th grade geography students were able to learn about
countries, laws and five basic forms of government; monarchy, oligarchy, democracy,
republic, and anarchy. They were able to share their culture by working together to
create laws and social customs that they all believe in and present these laws to the
class. Students were engaged in learning by the possibility of being asked to explain
them, and later by the opportunity to socialize and create with their classmates. Some

strengths of the plan are that students are actively involved in their learning and are
working with each other to create a final project, a project that allows them to express
their thoughts, opinions, ideas and values.. Some weaknesses are that students could
