1. Standards

a. Nevada​ ​Core​ ​Curriculum:

i. ​ ​Standard​:​ ​H2.[6-8].25​ ​Identify​ ​the​ ​characteristics​ ​of​ ​various​ ​political

systems​ ​of​ ​ancient​ ​civilizations.

ii. Observable​ ​Goal​:​ ​SWBAT​:​ ​Explain​ ​and​ ​assess​ ​different​ ​forms​ ​of

government.

b. Multicultural​ ​Goal​:​ ​SWBAT​ ​Promote​ ​positive​ ​gender,​ ​racial,​ ​cultural,​ ​class​ ​and

individual​ ​identities,​ ​by​​ ​share​ ​their​ ​beliefs​ ​by​ ​creating​ ​laws​ ​and​ ​social​ ​customs​ ​for

their​ ​made​ ​up​ ​country

c. Learning​ ​Styles:

i. Auditory:​ ​the​ ​video​ ​provides​ ​auditory​ ​explanation​ ​of​ ​the​ ​different​ ​forms​ ​of

government​ ​and​ ​students​ ​will​ ​have​ ​to​ ​repeat​ ​them​ ​allowed​ ​after​ ​the​ ​video

ii. Visual:​ ​The​ ​video​ ​provides​ ​words​ ​and​ ​images​ ​for​ ​students​ ​to​ ​look​ ​at.

Students​ ​are​ ​able​ ​to​ ​take​ ​notes​ ​along​ ​with​ ​the​ ​video.​ ​Students​ ​will​ ​be

writing​ ​out​ ​the​ ​different​ ​effects​ ​of​ ​the​ ​forms​ ​of​ ​government.

iii. Body​ ​Kinesthetic:​ ​Students​ ​are​ ​working​ ​with​ ​their​ ​hands​ ​creating​ ​and

decorating​ ​a​ ​poster​ ​and​ ​flag.

3. Instructional​ ​Learning​ ​Process:

a. Do-First​:​ ​Ask​ ​students​ ​what​ ​components​ ​make​ ​up​ ​a​ ​country​ ​and​ ​its​ ​culture.​ ​Have

students​ ​write​ ​a​ ​list​ ​of​ ​as​ ​many​ ​components​ ​as​ ​possible.​ ​(5​ ​minutes)​ ​Then​ ​go

over​ ​their​ ​lists​ ​and​ ​write​ ​the​ ​components​ ​of​ ​the​ ​board​ ​for​ ​them​ ​to​ ​use​ ​as​ ​a

reference​ ​during​ ​the​ ​rest​ ​of​ ​the​ ​lesson.​ ​(10​ ​minutes)​ ​About​ ​15​ ​minutes​ ​total.

b. Mini​ ​Lesson:​​ ​Watch​ ​a​ ​short​ ​video​ ​on​ ​the​ ​five​ ​basic​ ​forms​ ​of​ ​government.​ ​Have

students​ ​take​ ​notes​ ​as​ ​the​ ​video​ ​plays.​ ​(11​ ​minutes).​ ​Do​ ​a​ ​quick​ ​review​ ​to​ ​make

sure​ ​students​ ​were​ ​paying​ ​attention,​ ​pick​ ​a​ ​student​ ​at​ ​random​ ​via​ ​blind​ ​pinpoint

on​ ​seating​ ​chart​ ​and​ ​ask​ ​them​ ​to​ ​explain​ ​one​ ​of​ ​the​ ​forms​ ​of​ ​government

mentioned​ ​in​ ​the​ ​video.​ ​If​ ​the​ ​student​ ​is​ ​unable​ ​to​ ​answer,​ ​allow​ ​other​ ​students​ ​a

chance.​ ​Answer​ ​any​ ​questions​ ​students​ ​have​ ​in​ ​regard​ ​to​ ​forms​ ​of​ ​government.

c. Guided​ ​Practice​:​ ​Divide​ ​class​ ​into​ ​five​ ​predetermined​ ​groups​ ​and​ ​explain​ ​the

assignment,​ ​writing​ ​the​ ​directions​ ​on​ ​the​ ​board​ ​next​ ​to​ ​the​ ​list​ ​of​ ​country

components.​ ​Each​ ​group​ ​will​ ​create​ ​a​ ​made​ ​up​ ​country​ ​that​ ​is​ ​governed​ ​by​ ​the

form​ ​of​ ​government​ ​assigned​ ​to​ ​them.​ ​Give​ ​each​ ​group​ ​a​ ​poster​ ​board​ ​and​ ​a

handful​ ​of​ ​markers​ ​for​ ​them​ ​to​ ​write​ ​the​ ​following​ ​components​ ​on​ ​and​ ​present​ ​to

the​ ​class​ ​next​ ​time​ ​we​ ​meet.​ ​ ​ ​Each​ ​country​ ​should​ ​have:

i. A​ ​flag

ii. A​ ​couple​ ​examples​ ​of​ ​what​ ​industries​ ​the​ ​students​ ​think​ ​would​ ​flourish

under​ ​this​ ​government,​ ​and​ ​examples​ ​of​ ​industries​ ​they​ ​think​ ​would​ ​do

poorly​ ​under​ ​this​ ​government

iii. At​ ​least​ ​three​ ​laws​ ​of​ ​their​ ​country​ ​(for​ ​the​ ​group​ ​doing​ ​anarchy,​ ​have

them​ ​list​ ​social​ ​customs​ ​instead)

iv. A​ ​section​ ​about​ ​the​ ​culture​ ​of​ ​their​ ​country​ ​in​ ​relation​ ​to​ ​food,​ ​dress,

religion,​ ​family​ ​structure​ ​and​ ​language

v. a​ ​short​ ​story​ ​about​ ​daily​ ​life​ ​in​ ​this​ ​country​ ​to​ ​be​ ​read​ ​allowed​ ​when​ ​they

present​ ​during​ ​the​ ​next​ ​class​ ​meeting

d. Independent​ ​Practice​:Allow​ ​students​ ​the​ ​next​ ​45​ ​minutes​ ​to​ ​work​ ​on​ ​their​ ​posters

and​ ​short​ ​story.​ ​They​ ​may​ ​research​ ​countries​ ​that​ ​operate​ ​under​ ​this​ ​form​ ​of

government​ ​for​ ​examples.​ ​45​ ​minutes​ ​total.

e. Exit​ ​Slip​:​ ​Completed​ ​or​ ​Mostly​ ​Completed​ ​“Our​ ​Country​ ​Project”.​ ​5​ ​minutes​ ​total

​ ​Allow​ ​them​ ​10​ ​min​ ​during​ ​the​ ​next​ ​class​ ​to​ ​make​ ​any​ ​last​ ​minute​ ​adjustments​ ​to

their​ ​project​ ​before​ ​having​ ​them​ ​present.

5. Reflection​:​ ​Through​ ​this​ ​lesson,​ ​8th​ ​grade​ ​geography​ ​students​ ​were​ ​able​ ​to​ ​learn​ ​about

countries,​ ​laws​ ​and​ ​five​ ​basic​ ​forms​ ​of​ ​government;​ ​monarchy,​ ​oligarchy,​ ​democracy,

republic,​ ​and​ ​anarchy.​ ​They​ ​were​ ​able​ ​to​ ​share​ ​their​ ​culture​ ​by​ ​working​ ​together​ ​to

create​ ​laws​ ​and​ ​social​ ​customs​ ​that​ ​they​ ​all​ ​believe​ ​in​ ​and​ ​present​ ​these​ ​laws​ ​to​ ​the

class.​ ​Students​ ​were​ ​engaged​ ​in​ ​learning​ ​by​ ​the​ ​possibility​ ​of​ ​being​ ​asked​ ​to​ ​explain

them,​ ​and​ ​later​ ​by​ ​the​ ​opportunity​ ​to​ ​socialize​ ​and​ ​create​ ​with​ ​their​ ​classmates.​ ​Some

strengths​ ​of​ ​the​ ​plan​ ​are​ ​that​ ​students​ ​are​ ​actively​ ​involved​ ​in​ ​their​ ​learning​ ​and​ ​are

working​ ​with​ ​each​ ​other​ ​to​ ​create​ ​a​ ​final​ ​project,​ ​a​ ​project​ ​that​ ​allows​ ​them​ ​to​ ​express

their​ ​thoughts,​ ​opinions,​ ​ideas​ ​and​ ​values..​ ​Some​ ​weaknesses​ ​are​ ​that​ ​students​ ​could

easily​ ​become​ ​to​ ​noisey​ ​or​ ​distracted​ ​when​ ​working​ ​together.
