Book summary of “The fever king”, by Victoria Lee

It’s the 22nd century and North America is divided into several different countries in the
aftermath of a worldwide disaster ,called the catastrophe. A plague that first hit back in the 21st
century killed and continues to kill almost every person who gets infected with the virus. Among
those few who survive , there are people who become witchings , developing a presenting power
and the ability to learn more magical powers as a result of the virus’s presence in their body.

Noam Alvaro is a 16-year-old teenager and son of undocumented immigrants from Atlantia who
has spent his life fighting for the rights of refugees fleeing magical outbreaks and seeking help
from the well-developped country , Carolinia, only to be deported with vicious efficiency. Happy
to see that his latest cyberattack on the Central News Bureau has made the first page in today’s
newspaper , Noam goes home early , only to find out that his father ,who has been in a catatonic
state for years , is now infected with magic. He looks desperately for help, but realizes that
everyone in his neighborhood is infected, including himself, as he loses consciousness.

Alvaro wakes up days later in a morgue, but is quickly attended when the doctors realized that he
survived. After being treated , he is sent in front of a commission and discovers that his
presenting power is technopathy. Despite failing the written exam ,as he dropped out of school in
8th grade, Noam becomes part of Level 4, the highest rank of the witching training program ,
because Calix Lehrer decides to mentor him.Calix Lehrer is the Minister of Defence, a 123-year-
old man who survived the catastrophe , overthrew the most powerful nation at 19 years old ,was
crowned king of Carolinia at 20 years old and is a living legend as he is considered the most
powerful witching that has ever existed. Sensing a way to change things , Noam accepts the
minister’s offer to teach him, secretly planning to use his power against the government.

In his first day at the barracks , he meets Taye, Ames, Bethany ,powerful witchings who have
been part of Level 4 since they were young. The next day, he meets Lehrer for his tutoring
lessons and Dara Shirazi, Lehrer’s adopted son and protégé . For the next week , the only thing
he does is reading , trying to catch up to the others from Level 4. Their free day comes and Noam
goes back to his old neighborhood to find Brennan, his father’s old friend and liaison of the
refugees to the government, hoping to help the cause. He soon realizes that he isn’t welcomed
there anymore, as he is now part of the government, and wants to prove his loyalty.

After a while, he starts to learn how to actually use his power and how to use telekinesis. One
day, he decides to break into a government complex in order to steal information from the
computer of chancellor Sacha, the ruler of Carolinia and the cause of all the problems the
refugees face. He almost gets caught , but , to his surprise, Dara helps him and he ends up in
Lehrer’s office. Lehrer allows him to keep all the information he has stolen from Sacha and
offers to be his ally . After Noam shows Brennan everything he manage to get his hands on ,
Brennan accepts his help.

As weeks pass,Alvaro sees an outbreak that kills hundreads of refugees , is arrested for starting a
fight during an anti-immigrants protest and bailed out by Lehrer and discovers that general Ames
brought his family in a quarantined zone many years ago, killing his wife and son , the only
survivor being his daughter, Noam’s classmate .After finding out about this , he tries to tell
Calix, but Dara stops him , saying that he knows how to manage the situation better.

Brennan hasn’t done anything this whole time , so Noam decides to make a plan with Lehrer , in
order to get rid of the chancellor and make Lehrer the new ruler. They cut the electricity in all of
the immigrants regions and put all the blame on Sacha , in addition to revealing all the
information they got their hands on until now, making people angrier than ever. Dara warns
Noam multiple times that he shouldn’t trust Lehrer and , after one of their fights, Alvaro accuses
him of being a hypocrite for never doing anything to punish general Ames .Dara leaves and
returns really late that night.The next morning, it is announced that the general was killed ,
stabbed 16 times. Despite having been the one who killed him mercilessly, Dara cried over his
death for hours. In three days , Noam was at the funeral with Lehrer , theoretically trying to find
the killer as he was supposed to do , practically making sure that Shirazi hadn’t left any evidence
at the crime scene. The only thing he finds is footage of a 15-year-old Dara being abused by the
general. Now , Noam understand why the death of Ames was so brutal. After talking to Dara he
understood that the reason he killed Ames was because Sacha ordered him to do so because Dara
told him about the coup they were planning and he knew about the coup because Shirazi was a
telepath and has been reading Noam’s mind this whole time.

After telling Lehrer everything he discovered, Lehrer tells Noam that it’s time for the final step
in their plan and he won’t like it :killing Brennan, as he is the only one who still controls the
refugees, not letting them riot. When Alvaro returns home , he is told that his friend was taken by
the soldiers of the Minister of Defence. In reality, he was fevermad because he used his powers
too much and now the virus is attacking him , so Lehrer has to keep him in stable condition. An
hour before Brennan was supposed to give a speech, Noam kills him and is caught and arrested
by Sacha. This way, he finds out that Lehrer’s power is persuasion ,the ability to control people ,
so he is probably controlling him too. Dara escapes and saves Noam , killing Sacha in the
process. Being under the effect of the fever, Dara tells him everything he knows about Lehrer.
He tells him that he is the one who keeps infecting people in order to make witchings and that if
he finds him , he is as good as dead. The fevermad Dara insists that they should go to the
quarantined zone because there is a vaccine that can help him and Noam accepts, but they are
found by Lehrer who tells Noam to forget everything Dara told him and he does. Three days
after the coup, Brennan is burried, the refugees are granted citizenship and Noam helps Dara
escape to the quarantined zone , but doesn’t go with him, making Lehrer promise to not go after
him. In exchange, Calix tells him to stay, to apply for the position Brennan used to have , as
liaison, and work with him , after he graduates Level 4 in two more years.
