How is the current situation of Covid-19 unfolding?

The covid-19 situation has created a major jolt in the fast-paced economies throughout the
world and has led the world come to a standstill.

Before, we progress towards Covid-19 pandemic, let’s understand the history of pandemics in
the world. Starting from Bubonic Plague which was responsible for the highest number of
deaths in the world, we have come a long way in terms of dealing with pandemics.
The major measures taken against pandemics are Lockdowns, social distancing, reduction of
non-essential travel, shopping, etc across different countries though it has been followed in
different measures in different countries.

Amongst the extremely affected countries like Italy, France, Iran in the initial phase to US now
leading the number of Corona virus cases, the pandemic has held the world in its grip.

India initiated a nation-wide lockdown on March 22nd onwards and then continued it again. The
rationale has been pretty clear.
As per research from Cambridge University, the lockdown needs to be in place for a total of 49 days!
R Adhikari and Rajesh Singh from the Dept. of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in the
University of Cambridge say their study is based on the interpretation that the lockdown on March
25, removed all social contacts and confined everyone to their homes (which still had few glitches).
This is an "optimistic" interpretation. They took 4 scenarios for computing the outcome. In the 1st
scenario, the lockdown ends after 21 days. In this scenario, they found that the probability of a
resurgence after the lockdown is pretty high. In the 2nd scenario, the lockdown of 49 days is
separated by 5 days between them. This also doesn't help much in prevention of resurgence.
Scenario 4 that appears to be the most optimum one advocates for one 49-day long lockdown. It
also brings down the number of infectives below 10.
The world is racing against time for preparing a vaccine against the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, as vaccines take at least couple of years to be formed and approved, the only
effective way against the virus is testing, isolating and social distancing as well as sanitizing
oneself regularly.
