Topic: Challenges and Issues of United Nations in the 20 th Century

I. Objective:
1. To reveal and identify the challenges and issues of United Nations in the 20 th
Century.

II. Statement of the Problem:


1. How the United Nations cope up in dealing with the challenges and issues in
times of 20th Century.

III. Introduction:
Challenges are meant to be met and overcome. The economy of the 20 th
Century encountered the different kind’s issues and faced from the
challenges. But, the United Nations help them to maintain international peace

and security, develop friendly relations among nations, achieve


international cooperation and be a center for harmonizing the actions of
nations.

IV. Content:

CHALLENGES AND ISSUES OF UN IN THE 20th CENTURY

Human Rights – are rights inherent to all human beings. Human rights gives
us the freedom to live openly and without discrimination. It is also what
protects us from being wrongfully convicted. UN established The Universal
Declaration of Human Rights (UNDHR) to protect the rights of human.

Democracy – is a core value of the United Nations. Democracy is a type of


Government in which all people that is living on its land have the right to vote
whom they choose to lead, what laws they want. UN supports democracy
from promoting human rights, development and peace and security programs.

Gender Equality – is a besides being a fundamental human right. Gender


equality aims to rid of the discrimination against women. It promotes a world
where women have as much right as a man to lead, and where
responsibilities and opportunity of a man and woman are the same. Economic
and Social Council (ECOSOC) under of UN, established it’s Commission on
the Status of Women (CSW) to empower women

Refugees – people fleeing persecution and conflict have been granted asylum
in foreign lands for thousand years. UN created an Agency for refugees called
United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHRC) to protect them.

Children – United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), is a special program of


the United Nations devoted aiding the national efforts to improve the health,
nutrition, education, and general welfare of children.

Decolonization – is defined as the act of getting rid of colonization, or freeing


a country from being dependent on another country. When UN founded in
1945, millions of people are began to be dependent on other nations. UN

created Trusteeship Council to monitor the “Trust Territories” it’s a


country that can manage on their own feet and there are people dependent to
them. And there are Eleven Trusted territories of UN, these are:
1. Western Samoa
2. Tanganyika
3. Rwanda-Urundi
4. Cameroons under British administration
5. Cameroons under French administration
6. Togoland under British administration
7. Togoland under French administration
8. New Guinea
9. Nauru
10. Strategic Trust Territory/ Trust territory of the Pacific Islands
11. Italian Somaliland

Poverty – entails more than the lack of income and productive resources to
ensure sustainable livelihood. From then, till now poverty is really a problem,
UN made so many ways to fight poverty, but we can’t say that there’s a
prevention on it now, because until now there are many people or families are
suffering in poverty. Way back on 2015, UN adopted 2030 agenda
Sustainable Development, which is there are 15 years to achieve their goal

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) – Acquired means you can


get infected with it; Immune Deficiency means a weaknesses in the body’s
system that fights diseases. UN established UNAIDS - the joint United
Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. 11 UN system organizations unite the
world to fight against poverty. These are: UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, UNDP,
UNFPA, UNODC, the ILO, UNESCO, WHO and the World Bank.

V. Reflection:

No matter what challenges and issues that might of every nations, there’s
always a solution and way for them to overcome from it. With the help of
every individuals or even the programs and organizations, a group of people
that who are trying to maintain the international peace and security.
