A long time ago, the owl who was very wise, old, and strong was the chief
of all the animals. One day, Mr. Owl called the leaders of all the birds and animals
and announced, “Tomorrow at dawn we shall have a meeting at the old oak tree.
Be there as we have many things to talk about.”
The next day, all the animal chiefs went to the old oak tree. Mr. Owl sat on
a branch of the tree. He looked around to see if all animal chiefs were there. He
noticed that the rabbit chief, Peter Rabbit, was not there.
“I must find Peter Rabbit,” said Mr. Owl. And away he flew to Peter
Rabbit’s house.
“Peter Rabbit! Peter Rabbit!” Mr. Owl called out.
“I’ll pretend to be asleep,” Peter Rabbit said to himself. “I don’t want to go
to the meeting.”
But Mr. Owl called again and again. “Peter Rabbit, can you hear me? Come
to the meeting. Obey me, or I’ll make your ears grow. They’ll keep on growing
until you come,” he said.
“Foolish Mr. Owl,” laughed Peter Rabbit. “How can he make my ears grow?
I’d like to know. He’s trying to frighten me because he can’t find me.”
But soon Peter Rabbit felt something strange. He scratched his head. His
ears were growing! “What’s happening to my ears?” he cried out. “My ears are
growing longer and longer. Oh, why didn’t I obey him?”
So he called out , “Chief Wise Owl, I hear you. I’m coming to the meeting!”
At once Peter Rabbit’s ears stopped growing. But oh, how the wood folk
laughed when they saw him with his long ears.

Sepak Takraw or kick volleyball is Malaysia’s national sport. It was created by the royal
family of Malaysia about 500 years ago. The name itself came from two languages
—“sepak” which means “kick” in Malay and “takraw” which means “ball” in Thai. The
sport combines the skills of badminton, football, volleyball, and gymnastics.
The game starts when the server or “tekong” tosses the ball that is made of
handwoven rattan to a teammate. The server keeps his foot in a small serving area.
The game is played three-on-three in a badminton-sized court (20 × 44 ft) with a five-
foot-high net in the middle.
Great takraw players show a combination of great foot-eye coordination with
quickness, power, anticipation, flexibility, and acrobatic skills. Malaysia and Thailand
are the two powerhouses in this sport. Suebsak Phunsueb is the biggest Thai takraw
superstar. He is known for his lightning-fast and accurate “horse kick” serve. The audi-
ence always expect to be treated to an intense game whenever he is inside the court.

b. Felix Hidalgo d. Fabian de la Rosa
Fabian de la Rosa, already, had a strong inclination for art ever since he was a boy.
As soon as he could hold a pencil, he began drawing trees, houses, and various
animals. His first formal lesson in art started when he was barely ten years old. He
has grown under the watchful eyes of his aunt, Marciana de la Rosa, a noted artist
during her time.
When Fabian was old enough, he enrolled at the Academia de Dibujo Y Pin-
tura where he studied under Don Lorenzo Rocha. Unlike other artists, Fabian’s
greatness was his ability to show pictorially a poet’s feeling. Like a true artist, he
painted what he saw, while others tended to exaggerate the small world through
rose-colored glasses. Fabian de la Rosa looked at the world with his naked eyes.
This made his painting all light and sweet.
The painting of Fabian entitled “Planting Rice” was one of those displayed
at the International Exposition of St. Louis in 1904. Here, the works of the world’s
best artists competed for honors. After the competition, three who emerged as
winners were Filipinos. The first was Juan Luna, painter of the gigantic canvas
“People Et Rois” The second winner was Felix R. Hidalgo who won three medals.
The third winner was an unknown Filipino painter. He was the boy who years ago
refused to look at the small world through rose-colored glasses. He was Fabian de
La Rosa, the first modern Filipino painter.
