Plan and Prepare Unit Assembly
Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Plan the proper preparation in unit assembly.
2. Follow basic safety requirements.
Introduction:
During installation and initial test, careful planning and preparation
are to be done. To avoid personal injury and damages to wiring due to sharp
pins on connectors and printed circuit assemblies, rough chassis edges and
corners, and hot components.
Preparation
Proper preparation is the key to a successful build. Before you begin,
make sure you have all the tools you will need, secure a clear, well-lit
workspace, gather all the components you’ll be using and unpack them one
at a time, verifying that everything that is supposed to be there is present. At
this point you should leave the parts themselves in their protective anti-
Safety Precautions
1. Static electricity is the biggest danger to the expensive parts you are
about to assemble. Even a tiny shock, which is much too small for you
to feel, can damage or ruin the delicate electronic traces many times
smaller than a human hair that make up your CPU, RAM and other
chips. It’s important to use your anti-static wrist strap to prevent
damage to these components. Once you have the power supply
installed in the case, clip the end of the wrist strap to the outside of
the power supply. (Never plug your computer in while you are
connected to it by a wrist strap.) This will ensure that you, the case
and the power supply are all connected to a common ground, in other
words there will be no inequality of charge that will allow a spark to
jump from you to the case. It’s also helpful to have an anti-static mat
to set the case and other components on.
2. Nobody but you are at fault if you shock your components with static
electricity. Make sure that you take the precautions in the previous
paragraph to ground yourself from static electricity. (Note: if you really
must work on a computer and have not got proper anti-static
equipment, it is usually OK if you make sure that you do not move
about much; are not wearing any static-prone clothing; handle
components by the edges; and regularly (once a minute or so), touch
a grounded object.). The case metal of your PC's power supply will

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Describe the proper procedure in performing specific job.
2. Define proper techniques with basic safety requirements.
Introduction:
All establishments would like to require their employees to get a clear
understanding on the specific policies and procedures that they implement.
This will contribute to the assurance of safety of all workers within the
establishment. Read all the information below and identify the advantages of
having OH&S standards.
Personal Safety
Working with computers can cause workers several problems. Before
you start assembling/disassembling your computer system, to keep both
your unit and yourself safe, here are the safety procedures.
Do not work alone so that there is someone who can take care of you
in case of emergency.
Read and follow instruction on the manual carefully.
Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before
working on it.
Take away any liquid such as mineral water or soft drinks near your
working area or near computers, the three of the most damaging
things to a computer are moisture (sweat, drinking water), shock
(electric or from being dropped) and dust (any debris from household
dust to bits of food).
Be careful with tools that may cause short circuit.
Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the
computer (such as the computer casing) and make sure your hands
are completely dry to avoid damaging any mechanical parts as well as
to avoid electrocution.
Electrostatic Discharge
Touching unpainted metal before handling parts can often provide the
grounding required:
Lifting Equipment
Do not lift greater than 50 pounds (23 kg.) independently. Always
obtain assistance from a second person or utilize a mechanical lifting device.

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Identify the computer hardware
2. Assemble a computer system
Introduction:
This set of instructions will help you assemble a basic computer
capable of running most modern software packages encountered by a casual
user. Modern computers become more affordable when users supplement
their monetary investment with a few hours of effort. This computer build
will be very basic and will be the minimum hardware necessary to have a
functional system. After you have all of the parts and materials needed, it
will take between 2 and 4 hours to assemble your computer and you will
need to be able to use simple hand tools, such as a screwdriver and a pair of
pliers.

the machine known today as the
personal computer. A modern digital

The computing part of the computer. Also called the "processor," the CPU is
made up of the control unit, which executes the instructions, and the ALU,
which performs the calculations and
logical operations. Today, the CPUs of
almost all computers are contained on a

processing units on one chip are
commonplace.

Have a suitable work area, with good lighting and plenty of space.
Ensure you have all required tools on hand for easy access. Consider
keeping a container nearby to hold loose parts like screws.
Have a guide/reference material nearby (this guide, or an instructional
video). You may also want to quickly skim over the relevant sections of
the manuals for the individual parts you’re about to assemble. These
are typically included as a paper insert in the product packaging.
Ensure your area is not at risk of static electricity, which has the
potential to damage your parts.
Be aware of safety precautions.
Step 1.
This method involves partially assembling the motherboard and associated
units (CPU, CPU heat sink, and RAM) outside of the case, then transplanting
this whole unit to within the case before continuing with the build assembly.
3. Holding the CPU by its sides, line up any alignment notches or the
triangle marked on the corner of the CPU to the triangle marked on
the motherboard. Gently place it straight down into the motherboard
socket to seat the CPU.
4. Lower the CPU socket cover over the CPU and lower the latch lever
closed again to secure the CPU socket holder closed.

Before closing your case completely, you may wish to do some ‘cable
management’, which means tucking away, rerouting, or removing and
securing any loose slack from cables which would otherwise be hanging
around loose in your case.
We recommend using cable ties to neatly secure cables in bundles and away
from any moving parts (such as fans).

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Define what BIOS is.
2. Enumerate BIOS Sequence.
3. Access and Configure the BIOS set up.
Introduction:
This section describes how to view and/or modify the Basic
Input/output System (BIOS) settings. The BIOS Setup utility reports system
information and can be used to configure the server BIOS setting
One of the most common uses of Flash memory is for the basic
input/output system of your computer, commonly known as the BIOS
The BIOS software has several different roles, but its most important role is
to load the operating system. When you turn on your computer and the
microprocessor try to execute its first instruction, it must get that
instruction from somewhere. It cannot get it from the operating system
because the operating system is located on a hard disk, and the
microprocessor cannot get to it without some instructions that tell it how.
The BIOS provides those instructions. Some of the other common tasks that
the BIOS performs include:
The BIOS is special software that interfaces the major hardware components
of your computer with the operating system. It is usually stored on a Flash
memory chip on the motherboard, but sometimes the chip is another type of
ROM.
When you turn on your computer, the BIOS does several things. This is its
usual sequence:
The first thing the BIOS does is check the information stored in a tiny
(64 bytes) amount of RAM located on a complementary metal oxide
semiconductor (CMOS) chip. The CMOS Setup provides detailed information
particular to your system and can be altered as your system changes. The
BIOS uses this information to modify or supplement its default programming
as needed.
To enter the CMOS Setup, you must press a certain key or combination of
keys during the initial start-up sequence. Most systems use "Esc," "Del,"

Once you have entered setup, you will see a set of text screens with several
options. Some of these are standard, while others vary according to the BIOS
manufacturer. Common options include:
The BIOS uses CMOS technology to save any changes made to the
computer's settings. With this technology, a small lithium or Ni-Cad battery
can supply enough power to keep the data for years. In fact, some of the
newer chips have a 10-year, tiny lithium battery built right into the CMOS
chip!
