Plan and Prepare Unit Assembly

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Plan the proper preparation in unit assembly.
2. Follow basic safety requirements.

Introduction:
During installation and initial test, careful planning and preparation
are to be done. To avoid personal injury and damages to wiring due to sharp
pins on connectors and printed circuit assemblies, rough chassis edges and
corners, and hot components.

Preparation
Proper preparation is the key to a successful build. Before you begin,
make sure you have all the tools you will need, secure a clear, well-lit
workspace, gather all the components you’ll be using and unpack them one
at a time, verifying that everything that is supposed to be there is present. At
this point you should leave the parts themselves in their protective anti-

static bags and assemble all the accompanying manuals. Read the manuals,
check the diagrams, and make sure you understand where each part goes
and how it attaches. If there is anything you don’t understand, now is the
time to do a little extra Internet research or call the manufacturer with your
questions.
Find a dry, well-ventilated place to do your work. You should have
plenty of light and if possible, you should choose an area without carpet on
the floor, as carpet tends to generate a lot of static.

Safety Precautions
1. Static electricity is the biggest danger to the expensive parts you are
about to assemble. Even a tiny shock, which is much too small for you
to feel, can damage or ruin the delicate electronic traces many times
smaller than a human hair that make up your CPU, RAM and other
chips. It’s important to use your anti-static wrist strap to prevent
damage to these components. Once you have the power supply
installed in the case, clip the end of the wrist strap to the outside of
the power supply. (Never plug your computer in while you are
connected to it by a wrist strap.) This will ensure that you, the case
and the power supply are all connected to a common ground, in other
words there will be no inequality of charge that will allow a spark to
jump from you to the case. It’s also helpful to have an anti-static mat
to set the case and other components on.
2. Nobody but you are at fault if you shock your components with static
electricity. Make sure that you take the precautions in the previous
paragraph to ground yourself from static electricity. (Note: if you really
must work on a computer and have not got proper anti-static
equipment, it is usually OK if you make sure that you do not move
about much; are not wearing any static-prone clothing; handle
components by the edges; and regularly (once a minute or so), touch
a grounded object.). The case metal of your PC's power supply will

usually be a suitable grounded object (please note that the metal must
be unpainted). As noted above, touch it every few minutes while you
are working on your PC if you haven’t got a wrist strap.
3. Turn off your computer and switch off your Power Supply at the wall
before installing or removing any components - if power is flowing to
components as they are installed or removed, they can be seriously
damaged. In order to have a computer properly grounded, you need it
plugged in at the wall but turned off at the power supply and at the
wall. The neutral line may be earthed.
4. Never cut the grounding pin off your power cord. This "safety ground"
stands between you and potentially lethal voltages inside the power
supply.
5. Be wary of sharp edges! Many lower-end PC cases have sharp,
unfinished edges. This is especially so on interior surfaces, and where
the case has been cut or punched-out. Use care and take your time to
avoid cutting your hands. If your case has this problem, a little time
with some sandpaper before you begin construction can spare you a
lot of pain. Be extra careful not to cut yourself when installing the I/O
Shield.
6. Dismantling discrete electronic components such as your Power
Supply or Monitor is dangerous. They contain high voltage capacitors,
which can cause a severe electric shock if you touch them. These hold
a charge even when the unit is not plugged in and are capable of
delivering a fatal shock.

OH&S Policies and Procedures

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Describe the proper procedure in performing specific job.
2. Define proper techniques with basic safety requirements.

Introduction:
All establishments would like to require their employees to get a clear
understanding on the specific policies and procedures that they implement.
This will contribute to the assurance of safety of all workers within the
establishment. Read all the information below and identify the advantages of
having OH&S standards.

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH), also commonly referred to as

health and safety, Occupational Health and Safety (OHS), occupational
health, or occupational safety, is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the
safety, health, and welfare of people at work.

Here in the Philippines with RA 11058 law, employers are now

required to comply with occupational safety and health standards including
informing workers on all types of hazards in the workplace and having the
right to refuse unsafe work, as well as providing facilities and personal
protective equipment for the workers, among others. In this module, you will
identify OHS policies and procedures for assembling computer hardware.

Personal Safety
Working with computers can cause workers several problems. Before
you start assembling/disassembling your computer system, to keep both
your unit and yourself safe, here are the safety procedures.

 Do not work alone so that there is someone who can take care of you
in case of emergency.
 Read and follow instruction on the manual carefully.
 Always power off the computer and unplug the computer before
working on it.
 Take away any liquid such as mineral water or soft drinks near your
working area or near computers, the three of the most damaging
things to a computer are moisture (sweat, drinking water), shock
(electric or from being dropped) and dust (any debris from household
dust to bits of food).
 Be careful with tools that may cause short circuit.
 Always ground or discharge yourself before touching any part of the
computer (such as the computer casing) and make sure your hands
are completely dry to avoid damaging any mechanical parts as well as
to avoid electrocution.

Computer Systems
 Handle all parts with care. Place each piece you remove carefully down
onto a stable surface, if a component does not come out easily, do not
use excessive force if things do not quite slip into place or when you
are removing it. Instead, check if you are removing it correctly and no
wires still connected in the hardware.
 Always full the cable connector on the handle and not on the cable
itself
 Clean the area before and after using it to maintain sanitation and
prevent accidents.
 Hold the components on the edges and do not touch the Integrated
Circuit (IC) parts.
 Always wear personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with
the organization's OHS procedures and practices.
 Make sure that the pins are properly aligned when connecting a cable
connector.
 Hazard/risks in the workplace and their corresponding indicators are
identified to minimize or eliminate risk to co-workers, workplace and
environment.
 Contingency measures during workplace accidents, fire and other
emergencies are recognized.
 Use brush, compressed air, or blower in cleaning the computer
system.

Protective Equipment (PPE) includes safety glasses, goggles, face shields,

gloves, lab coats, aprons, ear plugs, and respirators. Personal protective
equipment is carefully selected to ensure that it is compatible with the
chemicals and the process used.

Electrostatic Discharge

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is the sudden flow of electricity between

two electrically charged objects caused by contact, an electrical short, or

dielectric breakdown. A buildup of static electricity can be caused by
tribocharging or by electrostatic induction. The ESD occurs when differently-
charged objects are brought close together or when the dielectric between
them breaks down, often creating a visible spark.
ESD is a major concern when handling components, especially
expansion cards and system boards. Very slight charges can damage circuits
in ways that may not be obvious, such as intermittent problems or a
shortened product lifespan.

Why is controlling ESD important?

The Voltage required to damage many current devices is less than the
human body’s level of sensitivity. A spark only occurs at 3000V to 3500V
and some devices can be destroyed at less than 100V.

ESD tolerance in major chips/circuit board is being reduced over time

to improve system speed but this would make the chips more sensitive to
ESD damage.

To prevent static damage, see the below tips:

 Use an ESD wrist strap that is properly grounded.

ESD Wrist Strap

pro.co.uk/ioniser-pro-wrist-strap/

 If a strap is not available, discharge static electricity from your body

before you touch any of your computer's electronic components, by

touching an unpainted metal surface on the computer chassis.
Periodically touch an unpainted metal surface to remove any static
charge your body may have accumulated.
 Handle all static-sensitive components in a static-safe area. If possible,
use anti-static floor pads and workbench pads.
 When handling static-sensitive components, grab them by the sides,
not the top. Avoid touching pins and circuit boards.
 When unpacking a static-sensitive component from its shipping
carton, do not remove the component from the anti-static packing
material until you are ready to install the component. Before
unwrapping the anti-static packaging, be sure to discharge static
electricity from your body.
 Before transporting a static-sensitive component, place it in an anti-
static container or packaging.

What if grounding is NOT available? What can you do when servicing a

system and you have no way to ground yourself via a wrist strap or
alternative grounding equipment?

Touching unpainted metal before handling parts can often provide the
grounding required:

A crimping tool is a device used to conjoin two pieces of metal by deforming

one or both to hold each other. The result of the tool's work is called a crimp.
An example of crimping is affixing a connector to the end of a cable. For
instance, network cables and phone cables
are created using a crimping tool (shown
above) to join RJ-45 and RJ-11 connectors
to both ends of phone or Cat 5 cable.

Using Proper Test Equipment

For diagnosing serial- and parallel-port

problems, you need wrap plugs (also called
loopback connectors), which are used to
circulate, or wrap, signals. The plugs enable
the serial or parallel port to send data to itself
for diagnostic purposes.

Easily the most important component in a computer system is the main
board or motherboard. Also called the "system board," "main board" "base
board" or "logic board," it is the primary printed circuit board in a computer
or other electronic device. In a modern desktop computer, the motherboard
contains CPU and RAM sockets and the chipset, which houses the control
circuits for all primary peripheral devices (drives, keyboard, mouse, etc.). A
motherboard also has PCI-Express slots for a high-end graphics card or
other peripherals. There are hundreds of versions available, with a variety of
different CPUs, speeds, features, and options

The computing part of the computer. Also called the "processor," the CPU is
made up of the control unit, which executes the instructions, and the ALU,
which performs the calculations and
logical operations. Today, the CPUs of
almost all computers are contained on a
single microprocessor chip, and multiple
processing units on one chip are
commonplace.

Assembling Computer System

To complete the assembly of a new computer system from start to finish,

make sure to plan.

 Have a suitable work area, with good lighting and plenty of space.
 Ensure you have all required tools on hand for easy access. Consider
keeping a container nearby to hold loose parts like screws.
 Have a guide/reference material nearby (this guide, or an instructional
video). You may also want to quickly skim over the relevant sections of
the manuals for the individual parts you’re about to assemble. These
are typically included as a paper insert in the product packaging.
 Ensure your area is not at risk of static electricity, which has the
potential to damage your parts.
 Be aware of safety precautions.

Information Sheet 1.1-5
BIOS Configuration

Learning Objectives:
After reading this information sheet, the trainee is expected to:
1. Define what BIOS is.
2. Enumerate BIOS Sequence.
3. Access and Configure the BIOS set up.

Introduction:
This section describes how to view and/or modify the Basic
Input/output System (BIOS) settings. The BIOS Setup utility reports system
information and can be used to configure the server BIOS setting

One of the most common uses of Flash memory is for the basic
input/output system of your computer, commonly known as the BIOS

(pronounced "bye-ose"). On virtually every computer available, the BIOS
makes sure all the other chips, hard drives, ports, and CPU function
together.

BIOS inside motherboard

Tyson, J. (2020, June 2). How BIOS Works. HowStuffWorks. https://computer.howstuffworks.com/bios.htm

The BIOS software has several different roles, but its most important role is
to load the operating system. When you turn on your computer and the
microprocessor try to execute its first instruction, it must get that
instruction from somewhere. It cannot get it from the operating system
because the operating system is located on a hard disk, and the
microprocessor cannot get to it without some instructions that tell it how.
The BIOS provides those instructions. Some of the other common tasks that
the BIOS performs include:

 A power-on self-test (POST) for all the different hardware components

in the system to make sure everything is working properly
 Activating other BIOS chips on different cards installed in the
computer. - For example, SCSI and graphics cards often have their
own BIOS chips.
 Providing a set of low-level routines that the operating system uses to
interface to different hardware devices - It is these routines that give

the BIOS its name. They manage things like the keyboard, the screen,
and the serial and parallel ports, especially when the computer is
booting.
 Managing a collection of settings for the hard disks, clock, etc.

The BIOS is special software that interfaces the major hardware components
of your computer with the operating system. It is usually stored on a Flash
memory chip on the motherboard, but sometimes the chip is another type of
ROM.

When you turn on your computer, the BIOS does several things. This is its
usual sequence:

1. Check the CMOS Setup for custom settings

2. Load the interrupt handlers and device drivers
3. Initialize registers and power management
4. Perform the power-on self-test (POST)
5. Display system settings
6. Determine which devices are bootable
7. Initiate the bootstrap sequence

The first thing the BIOS does is check the information stored in a tiny
(64 bytes) amount of RAM located on a complementary metal oxide
semiconductor (CMOS) chip. The CMOS Setup provides detailed information
particular to your system and can be altered as your system changes. The
BIOS uses this information to modify or supplement its default programming
as needed.

To enter the CMOS Setup, you must press a certain key or combination of
keys during the initial start-up sequence. Most systems use "Esc," "Del,"

"F1," "F2," "Ctrl-Esc" or "Ctrl-Alt-Esc" to enter setup. There is usually a line
of text at the bottom of the display that tells you "Press to Enter Setup."

https://www.techadvisor.com/how-to/windows/how-access-bios-in-windows-10-3681505/

Once you have entered setup, you will see a set of text screens with several
options. Some of these are standard, while others vary according to the BIOS
manufacturer. Common options include:

 System Time/Date - Set the system time and date

 Boot Sequence - The order that BIOS will try to load the operating
system
 Plug and Play - A standard for auto-detecting connected devices;
should be set to "Yes" if your computer and operating system both
support it
 Mouse/Keyboard - "Enable Num Lock," "Enable the Keyboard," "Auto-
Detect Mouse"...
 Drive Configuration - Configure hard drives, CD-ROM and floppy
drives
 Memory - Direct the BIOS to shadow to a specific memory address

Computer Systems
 Security - Set a password for accessing the computer
 Power Management - Select whether to use power management, as
well as set the amount of time for standby and suspend
 Exit - Save your changes, discard your changes or restore default
settings

Be very careful when making changes to setup. Incorrect settings may

keep your computer from booting. When you are finished with your changes,
you should choose "Save Changes" and exit. The BIOS will then restart your
computer so that the new settings take effect.

The BIOS uses CMOS technology to save any changes made to the
computer's settings. With this technology, a small lithium or Ni-Cad battery
can supply enough power to keep the data for years. In fact, some of the
newer chips have a 10-year, tiny lithium battery built right into the CMOS
chip!
