UN
BRACKET SUPPORTS 2004-03
FOR VERTICAL STEEL VESSELS

1 Scope
This Uhde standard applies to the engineering and construction of industrial and chemical plants. It contains
requirements for the design of bracket supports and connection plates for vertical steel vessels.

2 Units / abbreviations

3 Requirements
3.1 Design instructions
Sectional steel welded in compliance with type A of DIN 28083-1 and DIN 28083-2 shall be used as bracket
supports. For further requirements, refer to the sections below.

An earthing terminal shall be welded to any bracket support in compliance with Uhde standard UN 2003-01.

All welds shall be of the continuous fillet type.

The design of the bracket support shall consider the maximum thermal expansion of the vessel in radial direction. It
may be required to enlarge the diameter of the bores or to provide slotted holes.

The design of insulated process vessels shall consider the insulation thickness specified in the DS. Dimen-
sion f2 specified in DIN 28083-1 shall be corrected accordingly.

The manufacturer shall supply a stress analysis for the bracket supports and the vessel shell. The number of
brackets used shall be increased or a larger size be selected, if required.

The following shall be stated in the drawing of the process vessel: reference axes, arrangement of bracket
supports, data about cold insulation.

The type of installation, i.e. installation on a concrete foundation or steel structure, shall be specified in the DS.

3.2 Cold insulation for bracket supports

If the design temperature is below 0 °C, the bracket support shall be provided with cold insulation.
Cold insulation shall be made from 55 mm thick boards of synthetic-resin compressed wood or hard wood
(such as beech or oak, laminated in three layers and treated with a timber rot protection liquor).

The wooden boards shall be marked with the Uhde order and equipment number using indelible white paint.

The dimensions of the wooden boards and the bore positions are identical with those of the connection plates
acc. to Section 3.3.

At the point of attack of force FG (see DIN 28083-1) at least one bore shall be provided for anchoring the ves-
sel.

3.3 Connection plates for vertical vessels

Connection plates shall be used if process vessels are to be mounted on steel structures that are not hot-
galvanised.

If process vessels are mounted on galvanised steel structures or if connection plates cannot be used, the bolt
holes in the base plates shall not be arranged off the centrelines of the steel structure sections. The relevant
specifications are given in the DS. The positions and dimensions of the holes shall be specified in the drawing.

If process vessels are mounted on concrete foundations or platforms, the stud bolts shall be replaced by
anchor bolts.

3.4 Materials
Bracket supports shall be made of the same material as the vessel shell. The other components shall be
made of a suitable material, at least complying with section 3 of DIN 28083-1.

4 Components of the process vessel

Bracket supports and, depending on the type of installation, cold insulation and/or connection plates for
mounting a process vessel on a steel structure are deemed to be part of the process vessel.
