Course/Module description:
The seminar will examine a wide range of texts of Jewish philosophers and
Christian Scholastics between the 12th and the 14th century that deal with the
relationship between faith and reason.

Course/Module aims:
The main aim of the seminar is to provide students with an overview of the
relationship between faith and reason in Jewish thought and Latin Scholasticism in
the Middle Ages by a close reading of primary texts.

Learning outcomes - On successful completion of this module, students should be


able to:
- Know the main concepts of the relationships between faith and reason in Jewish
thought and Latin Scholasticism in the 12th-14th centuries
- Gain a basic acquaintance with the interactions between Jewish thought and Latin
Scholasticism between the 12th and the 14th century
- Know the main literary genres in Latin Scholasticism
- Gain ability to read and analyze texts of Jewish philosopher and Christian
Scholastics that deal which the issues (or with similar issues) discussed in the
seminar

Teaching arrangement and method of instruction: lectures, close reading of


sources, and students oral presentations

Course/Module Content:
We will discuss several issues such as:
- The conception of metaphysics
- Theology as science in Latin Scholasticism
- The possibilities of philosophy
- The limits of human knowledge
- The critique of philosophy in Jewish thought and Latin Scholasticism
- The conception of prophecy in Jewish thought and Latin Scholasticism
- The influence of Maimonides on Latin Scholasticism in the 13th and 14th centuries
- The influence of Latin Scholasticism on Jewish thought in the 13th and 14th
centuries
