Cave of Trios Frere
Discovery: Trios Frere is located in the Mid-Pyrenees region of southern France. It was
discovered in 1914 by the three sons of Henri Begouen and two friends. Work had been done
on this cave between 10,000 to 15,000 BC.

Explanation: The Paleolithic art at Trios Frere is dominated by the numerous fine
engravings. The two best galleries at this cave are Chapel of Lionees and the Sanctuary, this
area is filled with some 280 often overlapping engraved figures of bison, horses, stags and
reindeers.

Example:
• Magician Sorcerer
There is a picture of magician sorcerer in Cave Trios Frere. It is a picture of strange
humanoid creature who was wearing a mask on face and horns of swamp deer, having the
claws of bear on hands, beard of a man and tale of wolf. Animals were also drawn near it. It
seems that there was a magician who changed his appearance like this to perform magic
rituals. Its rendering was dark and due to the addition of skin more detail was added.

• Drawing of lionees
It was engraved on a natural ‘altar’, carefully placed in cervices below the altar and on the
walls around it are numerous votive objects such as shells, animal teeth and flint tools.
Cave of Font De Gaum
Discovery: Font De Gaum found in Dordogne, France known for its lavish prehistoric wall
paintings. First discovered as a locus of art in 1901 Its art was done between 10,000 to 15,000
BC.

Explanation: The cave has a high, narrow main gallery and several side passages. It contains
about 230 engraved and painted figures. The animals were painted in monochrome and
polychrome, usually in shades of red, brown and black. Its pictures have been vulnerable to
weathering human interference and considerable deposits of calcite left by dripping water. The
people of this cave would have been in complete darkness during paleolithic time, so artists
would have worked entirely by the light of primitive lamps and torches. In this cave pictures
were made after going 70 meters inside.

Examples:
• Bison
There is a picture of Bison which was made with such great neatness and expertness that it
was considered among the best examples of prehistoric art. Horns were made with twisted
perspective. Due to its light and dark shading there was a delicacay in body. Its outline was
done expertly by which its strength could be predicted. Its front legs were incomplete. In
this drawing outline had been beautifully merged with shading.
• Leaping Horse
The natural contours of the rock have been incorporated by the artist into the picture. The
rear limb and tail of the horse are implied by concretion, the curve of the belly by the shape
of flowstone.

Cave of Niaux
Discovery: Cave of Niaux is located in Niaux commune in south-western France. Judging by
its graffiti, Niaux cave has been visited on and off since 1602, although archeological interest
did not begin until the 1860’s. Its work was dated between 10,000 to 15,000 BC.

Explanation: Pictures were made by going 870 meters inside. In the pictures of this cave
lines were both thick and thin. Hair and skin of animals had been shown with crisscross lines.
Due to crisscross drawings pictures of cave niaux could be easily identified. Already present
holes had been accommodated with the wounds of animals. From the deposit (calcareous) on
Ibex experts found that these pictures were very old. Because this deposit creates after passing
thousands of years

Examples:
• Bison
A bison with the symbol of arrows had been found in this cave. Mostly outlining was done
with black color. The shape of body could be depicted.

• Salmon (trout)
Pictures were engraved on the floor of soil among which was a picture of fish. Drawn in
black outline and left unshaded.
• Cul-de-four
It is one final painting only accessible by crawling on hands and knees an unidentified image
either of a human figure or a painting of an animal seems to disappear in the very cave
itself.

Cave of Pech-Merle
Discovery: Pech-Merle cave is located near the village of de Cabrerets, France. The painted
chambers, which are to be found in the lower network were first discovered in 1922 by
teenagers. Work had been dated between 10,000 to 15,000 BC.

Explanation: The special thing was that the ups and downs of this cave had been used as
outline for the drawings of animals. For example a wall of cave is endorsed so this place was
used as outline to make face and neck of animal. Because of yellowish surface, pictures of this
cave could be identified immediately. It consists of some 570 separate images. There are also a
large number of black and red dots and other abstract symbols.

Examples:
• Spotted Horses
It was a picture of two horses with spots on their body. Face and legs were made short as
compared to the body. A lot of stencils were made around these horses, mostly fingers
were broken or twisted. A lot of spots had been made around these pictures. It seemed
that spots were made with something wet due to which the surface had become yellowish.
• The Wounded Man
Left under the dome, in red ,drawing of a man with four lines on either side and a sign.

Caves of Castillo
Discovery: These shelters are found along the Pas river in the Castillo mountain, just at the
intersection of three valleys. Found near the area of Santander, Spain. Discovered in 1903 by
the Spanish archeologist

Explanation: Due its work it has a resemblance with the cave of Altamira. These caves had
been used for many years but not on daily basis. These caves of this mountain are very deep so
it is very difficult to reach them. It seemed that they fulfill their daily rituals requirements from
their miniature sculpture art. At the end of Upper Paleolithic people started to live in open air
rather than such deep caves. They used such caves as shelter. Much of El Castillo paintings are
figurative and includes a number of outstanding drawings of horses, bisons, mamoths etc

Examples:
• Red Mamoths
This is a polychrome painting belong to Magdalenian art. These are figurative paintings.

• Panels of hands
It shows red disks and hand stencils made by blowing or spitting paints on the walls. The
bison overlay the hands and are therefore painted later.
