Consultation summary

The client has come in today for a half leg and bikini line wax. They have
had this treatment done before and there was nothing they did not like about
the results.

They have no contra-indications present to these treatments can be done.

There are no changes on their record card and they are not taking any new
medications, only the contraceptive pill.

They have had waxing treatments with both hot and warm wax and prefers
warm wax as it took less time. They mention that their bikini line can bleed
when it is waxed and that they would like to stop the treatment in that area if
this happens again. They said they would like to start with the half leg wax
followed by the bikini wax.

They would normally shave these areas twice a week. The last time they
shaved their legs and bikini line was around 4 weeks ago. They do not
exfoliate their skin or apply moisturising lotions. They find that their hair
grows very fast and it is thick and dark, especially on the bikini line. They say
their leg hair grows in a mostly downward direction and it is the same for the
bikini line.

The client says that they would like the hair on the bikini line removed from
the sides but none from the top. They would like their half leg wax to go up
just past the knee. Their expectations from today are to have smooth,
hairless skin that lasts for longer than shaving. They have no questions
before the start of the treatment.

For this treatment I will be wearing gloves and an apron to keep my uniform and
skin protected from the wax and for hygiene reasons. I will be using warm wax as
the client prefers this. I will make sure I dispose of the wax strips in a bin beside
the treatment bed as soon as I finished with them to keep the area tidy. I will be
keeping my trolley and work area clean and organised to keep the client safe
throughout the treatment. I will have my wax pot turned on at the correct working
temperature of approximately 43 degrees celsius so that it is ready for when the
treatment begins and no time is wasted waiting for it to heat up.

The treatment bed will be set in an upright position for the client to rest their back
on, as we will be starting with the half leg wax. It will have a protective plastic
covering over so the wax does not get on the bed and then new bed roll and clean
towels will cover that. The room temperature will be warm enough so the client is
comfortable as they will have their trousers off. I will put the clean towel over their
bottom half to keep them covered. The room will be well lit so I do not miss any
areas and I will use a mag lamp to see better.

I will begin by greeting the client and taking their coat. I will ask them to remove
their trousers and sit up on the treatment bed. They will do this with the curtain
closed while I go to the sink to wash my hands and then apply my apron and
gloves. I will return to the client and then carry out a heat and tactile test to make
sure their senses are working so they can tell me if they are in any pain or
discomfort during the treatment.

Then, with clean cotton pads and pre-wax lotion on, I will apply it to both of the legs
to prepare the skin for the wax. I will use a spatula to dip into the wax pot and apply
it to the lower leg in the direction the hair grows in. I will start with the front of the
leg and move upwards towards the knee. When I get to the knee I will ask the
client to bend their leg up so I get the skin on the knee stretched and tight which
will minimise pain and help when I remove the wax strip.

I will always keep the skin stretched around where I have placed the strip to
minimise discomfort for the client when I pull of the strip. Once I have done the
fronts of both halves of the legs, including the knee, I will lower the back of the
treatment bed. Then I will leave the treatment area, close the curtain while the
client turns over and places the towel back over their bottom so I can wax the
backs of the legs.

When I return I will start on the back of the leg and repeat for both legs. If there are
any hairs that do not come out with the wax and strips I will use sterilised tweezers
to remove the remaining ones so I am not going over the same area lots of times
as this can cause bruising. I will end by applying after wax with cotton pads to the
lower legs to soothe the skin.

I will then move on to the bikini line wax. I will put the back of the treatment bed
upright again for the client to sit up and I will leave the area again. While the curtain
is closed the client can position themselves with the towel over their legs if they are
cold or they can leave it off if they are comfortable to. When they are ready I will
return. They will have their underwear on and I can place tissues tucked in around
the edges of the underwear to protect it from getting wax on to it.

I will apply pre-wax on clean cotton pads to the area being waxed. If needed I will
ask the client to pull their skin taut where I am waxing to help to minimise the pain
when I pull off the wax strip. I will apply the wax using a spatula to one side of the
bikini line. Then I will place the wax strip on top of it and press and smooth it down
the skin with the direction of hair growth to adhere the strip to the wax. I will hold
the skin around the area taut and remove the strip fast, closely against the skin and
against the direction of hair growth. I will repeat this for the other side of the bikini
line and avoid the top of the bikini line which they asked me to keep.

Incase there is any bleeding in the waxed area, I will stop the treatment as the
client asked during the consultation. Normally, if there is bleeding in the area I will
avoid it and will change to using two spatulas. One spatula would be for dipping
into the wax pot and then the wax from this is dribbled on to the other spatula
which will have contact with the client’s skin. This way there is no risk of cross-
infection from the spatula and the wax in the pot.

When I am happy all of the hair has been removed I will confirm with the client that
they are satisfied with the final result and then, with clean cotton pads, I will apply
after wax lotion to soothe the area. I will ask the client to dress behind the curtain
and then return when they are ready to discuss aftercare and recommendations.
Recommendations and aftercare

For the next 24 hours after the waxing treatment the client has been advised
to avoid wearing tight clothing that can rub and irritate the waxed areas.
They should not apply creams or lotions or makeup to the waxed area as it
can enter the open pores and cause irritation or breakouts.

They should not wash the area with perfumed products and should avoid
heavy exercise that causes a lot of perspiration as this can also enter
through the open pores. They should avoid swimming pools and saunas.

They should not apply tanning products 24 to 48 hours and should avoid
direct sunlight or UV rays straight after or 24 hours after the treatment
because the top layer of the skin has been removed with the wax and so it is
exposed and more sensitive to sun damage.

The client is advised to come back in 6 to 8 weeks when the hair has grown
out and get it waxed again. They should not shave in between waxing
appointments. After 24 hours they can begin to exfoliate the skin when they
shower as it can prevent ingrown hairs and aid desquamation.

If the client experiences any adverse reaction to the waxing treatment they
are advised to apply a cold compress and if it worsens to contact their GP.
They should let us know so that we can record the reaction in their record
card.

I was happy with the treatment. I had very smooth legs after. She was calm when I didn’t want to
continue due to my bikini line being sensitive.

Self-reflection / Evaluation

Personal performance and technical skill:

I think the leg waxing went well. The legs were well prepared so the client had no
reaction or erythema on their skin. I am satisfied that all the hairs have been
removed and the legs looked and felt smooth after which is what the client said
they expected from the treatment. I think I worked with good technical skill as I had
a plan for where I was going to apply the wax and the order to do it. This helped
me to not drip any wax anywhere so the area was kept clean and tidy and I felt
confident in what I was doing.

Timekeeping and organisation skills:

I had the wax pot turned on and the wax at the correct temperature by the start of
the treatment so this saved time waiting for the wax to warm up. The products and
equipment I needed was organised on the trolley which also saved time and
allowed me to stay with the client the whole time.

Communication skills:

I communicated with the client where to position themselves so that I could get the
best angle to apply and remove the wax. This helped to keep the client comfortable
and reassured them. I also communicated with them throughout the treatment
when I checked if they were comfortable on the treatment bed and if they were
warm enough. I explained the steps I was going to take so they knew what to
expect and listened to them when they expressed some discomfort and stopped
the treatment as they asked due to them being sensitive in this area.

Areas I can improve on:

Sometimes, when I applied the wax, I applied it in too long of a section which
meant that there was not much room at the bottom of the wax strip for me to hold
on to and remove. I need to remember to apply the wax in lengths that are slightly
shorter than the wax strip next time.
