Consultation summary
The client has come in today for a basic manicure with gel polish. They have
no contra-indications present that would prevent or restrict a gel manicure
treatment and they are not on any medication. They have never had gel
polish on their nails before. They would like a deep red colour and a rounded
shape. They have removed most of the nail polish from their nails from their
last manicure but there are a few spots of colour still on the edges of some
nails that can be removed.
Their nails are short and are already a round shape but would they would
like me to shape them a bit better as some have jagged edges. They find the
skin on their hands quite smooth at the moment as they have previously had
a luxury manicure with a hand and arm massage which they enjoyed and
found very moisturising for their skin. They have been applying moisturiser
more often recently to keep their hands soft. They never exfoliate their
hands. They find the veins on their hands quite prominent but do not think
this can be helped. They also say the skin is a bit loose but that moisturiser
can sometimes help to make it feel firmer.
They do a lot of housework with their hands and do not wear gloves and
they say this causes their nails to break and can ruin their nail polish. They
find the condition of their nails can be brittle as they can easily break if they
get past a certain length. They do not do anything to their nails at home but
get a manicure every two to three weeks when the colour starts to grow out.
The client says they have a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables every day
and they drink quite a lot of water so does not think their nutrition affects the
health of their nails, it is more from using their hands doing washing up and
gardening.
For this treatment I will wear my uniform, my hair up and remove my jewellery. I will
have the work area set up before the client arrives with all the nail polish options
for them to choose from. As I will be using a UV lamp, I will plug this in ready and
keep the wire tucked away so there are no trip hazards.
I will make sure the area is free of slips with no water near the electrical equipment.
I will position the lamp close to where the client will sit so they do not need to
stretch their arms far. The lighting will be good so I can see what I am doing
properly and the room temperature will be warm enough so the client is
comfortable.
I will make sure the client and myself are sat in a comfortable seat. I will have all
manicure tools sterilised before the treatment so I am working hygienically and will
use clean towels to dry the clients hands.
I will begin by greeting the client and asking them to take a seat. I will ask them if
they can remove and rings or bracelets so they do not get in the way of the
treatment and I will store them safely away. I will wash my hands at this point and
fill up two manicure bowls with clean, warm water with cuticle softener in.
I will take a seat in front of the client and spray sanitiser on to their hands and
mine. I will analyse their hands for any contra-indications and look at their skin and
nail condition. I will then remove any old nail polish from the nails. Then I will shape
the nails on the left hand into a rounded shape, filing in one direction so I do not
weaken the nails. I will use the other side of the nail file that is more gritty to file
some of the longer nails down to the same length as they shorter ones. I will
confirm with the client the shape and length before I move on to the next hand. I
will apply cuticle massage cream to each nail, briefly massage it in and place their
hand in the manicure bowl. I will then repeat this for the right hand.
Then I will remove the left hand from the bowl, gently pat the hand dry with a clean
towel and then, with a sterile cuticle pusher, I will gently push back the cuticles in a
circular movement. Then, with a sterile cuticle nipper, I will trim the excess cuticles.
Then I will remove the right hand from the manicure bowl, dry it and repeat the
cuticle work on this hand.
I will place the tools back into the jar of water with sterilising solution each time I
use them.
Full treatment plan including justification
With hand lotion I will carry out a hand and arm massage to aid relaxation for the
client as they like this part of the manicure last time. I will squeak the nails with nail
polish remover to remove the oils from the nails from the hand lotion. I will move on
to preparing the nails for the gel polish. Using a smooth nail buffer I will buff the nail
plate in a back and forth motion, not going too fast or hard so I do not create a heat
sensation on the nail. I will repeat this for the nails on both hands.
Then I will wipe the hands with the UV nail prep on clean cotton pads. This will
remove any excess oils and prepare the nails for the polish. Then I will apply a gel
base coat to to the nails on the left hand, making sure not to go too close to the
cuticle and nail walls. If I make any mistake I can use a micro brush to clean it up
before I cure the polish under the lamp. I will place the hand under the lamp and
turn it on to cure the nail for 30 seconds. I can paint the nails on the right hand
while the left hand is curing. I will make sure I do not keep the nails under the lamp
for any longer than 30 seconds for each coat as it can cause it to bubble due to
over curing. I will swap the hands under the lamp and allow the base coat on the
right hand to cure.
Then I will apply one coat of colour to the left hand and place it under the lamp to
cure, I will repeat this for both hands, doing two coats of colour to make sure the
application is even. I will then apply a top coat to the left hand, sealing it at the tips
to prevent it peeling or chipping. I will cure it under the lamp for 30 seconds and
repeat this for the other hand.
Once I am finished I will wipe the nails with the nail prep on cotton pads to remove
the tackiness. Then I can apply cuticle oil to the cuticles and skin around the nails
to condition them. I will then discuss aftercare and recommendations with the
client.
Recommendations and aftercare
I have advised the client to return in 2-3 weeks when their nails begin to
grow out and they would like the gel polish to be removed and have another
colour. They should not try to remove the polish using normal nail polish
remover as it will not work and they should not try to pick the polish off as it
will damage their nails.
They are advised to keep applying moisturiser to there hands to keep them
hydrated and to make them skin feel firmer. They can also use a cuticle oil
on their cuticles at night to keep their nails healthy under the gel polish as it
is growing out.
They should not apply nail polish over the gel polish and should not attempt
to cut or file the nails themselves while the gel polish is still on. They should
wait 24 hours before going swimming as chlorine could cause lifting of the
gel polish.
Client feedback
Client comments:
I am really happy with my nails. It was my first time getting gel nails and I would get it done again. I
like the look of the gel and like that it was a lot quicker to dry than ordinary nail varnish.

Self-reflection / Evaluation
I think the final result looked nice and the client was happy with it. I
prepared the nails well ready for the gel polish as they were smooth
and had no moisture on them to interfere with the polish. I was able to
correct any mistakes being curing the nails under the lamp so there
was no polish on the cuticle of skin. The application was even and you
could not see any of the natural nail colour through the colour so two
coats of colour was enough. I think the client found the hand and arm
massage relaxing and it improved the look of the skin on their hands.
Communication skills:
I made a few mistakes when applying the first coat of colour, where I
went too close to the cuticle, but I was able to correct it with remover. I
can improve the application by moving the clients hand more when I
am painting the nail so I can see it better. On the first coat of the colour,
I let the gel polish cure under the lamp for longer than 30 seconds
which caused some bubbling. I will make sure I do not do this again so
this does not happen.
