I Read the text, write irregular verbs in brackets into the Past Simple tense.
Long, long ago there lived a famous king. His name was (be) Arthur and he were (be) the king of
the Britons. King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table fought (fight) many battles. Arthur
lost (lose) a lot of his knights but he usually won (win) the battles. Arthur’s last battle was (be) at
Camlan. The battle went (go) on all day long and in the evening everything got (get) quiet. King
Arthur was (be) badly wounded and only one of his knights survived – Sir Bedivere.
After the battle Sir Bedivere took (take) the wounded king to the island of Avalon, which was
(be) in the middle of the lake. The king knew (know) the lake well and remembered receiving his
magic sword, Excalibur, from the Lady of the Lake when he was (be) a young man. King Arthur fell
(fall) to the ground and said (say) to Sir Bedivere: ‘Now the time has come! Take Excalibur, go to
the lake and throw it into the water.’
Sir Bedivere took (take) the sword and went (go) to the lake. He stood (stand) on the shore of
the lake and looked at Excalibur. The light fell (fall) on the sword, and the knight saw (see) how
beautiful the sword was (be). So he hid (hide) it, and returned to the king.
‘Have you done it?’ asked King Arthur. ‘Yes, Your Majesty,’ said (say) Sir Bedivere.
The king smiled. ‘Tell me,’ he said (say). ‘What did you see (see)?’ ‘I heard (hear) the wind and
saw (see) the waters of the lake.’ The king stopped smiling. ‘You didnt throw (not throw) the
sword into the lake,’ he said (say). ‘Go back and do it.’
Sir Bedivere couldnt (cannot) throw the sword and came (come) back. When the King
understood (understand) that his knight disobeyed him, Arthur became (become) very angry.
‘You are a traitor!’ he cried. ‘Go now, and throw Excalibur out into the lake.’
Sir Bedivere ran (run) to the lake, took (take) the sword, closed his eyes and threw (throw) the
sword far away. The next moment an arm in white rose (rise) out of the water, caught (catch) the
sword, raised it three times and then drew (draw) it under the water. Later Sir Bedivere took
(take) Arthur to the lake, where they saw (see) a big black boat. In the boat there were (be) three
beautiful ladies with gold crowns.
They came (come) to take King Arthur away, Sir Bedivere didnt know (not know) where. The
queens put (put) Arthur into the boat. ‘The Round Table and I did (do) our work. Farewell!’ said
(say) King Arthur.
Then the boat moved slowly away. Sir Bedivere watched it until it disappeared
