Oral Presentation

Life is dependent on water, and without water no form of life can

survive. Our country, Guyana, which means land of many water, faces many
problems of water pollution. But it is hard to believe that even after knowing such
a fundamental truth, how the citizens of Guyana turn a blind eye to water pollution.
Persons are affected by water borne diseases and some may even die; water
pollution also destroys marine life. The government of Guyana has made many
remarkable efforts to prevent water pollution but they proved unsuccessful. As a
result, every time there is heavy rainfall the capital city of Guyana, Georgetown is
flooded. This not only happens in Georgetown but also in other areas across the
country especially in the coastal areas. In the capital city, small businesses dump
their garbage in the drains and gutters. Some pollute the water ways with other
industrial waste and chemicals. Some residents dispose of their garbage by
dumping it in nearby canals and drains. All of these activities contribute to the flow
of water to become stagnant. The citizens of the country are the main contributors
to the pollution of the water ways.

The government has implemented many strategies to fight water

pollution in the country but without the co-operation and assistance of the citizens,
this problem will not be resolved. The government along with the Mayor and City
Council of Guyana has carried out multiple clean up campaigns along the city to
prevent water pollution. Workers are seen throughout Georgetown cleaning the
drains and gutters to prevent flooding. The government has also placed a number
of garbage bins around the city; this was done to facilitate the disposing of garbage
by citizens.
The government should implement laws which states that persons
who are found polluting the water will be arrested and charged for their
wrongdoings. Although the government has been making an effort to stop water
pollution there is still something which should have be done to aid in the
prevention of water pollution. The mayor and city council should ensure that
garbage collection services are provided by the neighbourhood democratic council.
If this is not done and residents do not have any other means of disposing of their
garbage they will tend to throw it in the waterways.

When it rains, the flow of water is blocked and residents are faced
with complications as they suffer from flooding and some may also have livestock
and crops which may die. This can lead to many water borne diseases being
spread. Other than this, the government of Guyana has made efforts to solve the
rising problem of water pollution. But citizens are urged to cooperate with the
government to put an end to this.
