Experiment of Torsion testing machine

(Torsion test)

Objectives:
1. To determine the shear stress-strain behavior of the material
2. To learn the failure pattern of these materials in torsion
3. To determine the mechanical properties under heat treatment

Equipment:
Torsion testing machine
Heat treatment machine
Tongs
Vernier caliper
2 pieces mild steel bars (please see dimensions below)
Heat gun
Oil (for quenching)

Procedure for the specimen:

1. Cut 2 pcs of Cold rolled steel

2. Fabricate the 2 pcs to a desired specification(Please see the assigned task for
heat treatment)
A. For quenching
a. Heat the CRS inside heat treatment and set the temperature, wait until
the temperature reach 800 degrees Celsius
b. When it reaches 800 degree Celsius get the CRS inside using a clamp
then quench it in oil and wait for 30 minutes
B. For annealing
c. Heat the CRS inside the heat treatment and set the temperature, wait
until the temperature reaches 800 degress Celsius
d. When it reaches 800 degree celcius, turn off the switch then wait until
temperature slow down
C. For normalizing
e. Heat the CRS inside the heat treatment and set the temperature, wait
until the temperature reaches 800 degress Celsius
f. Let the specimen cool in a normal still air surroundings
D. For tempering
g. The specimen is also heated at 800 degrees celcius
h. Then, upon reaching the 800 degree celcius the metal was then
subjected to tempering(Steel is brought to specific hardness by
reheating to a given temperature after quenching)

3. After heat treatment procedure, the specimen is subjected to Universal Torsion

Machine

Procedure in using Torsion Testing Machine

a. Put the specimen at the chuck. Put a colored chalk /or pentel pen to the
specimen being tested.
b. Set the protractor to zero degree
c. Lock the sliding plate using wrench. The size of the wrench is 17 mm.
d. Set the weighing sale to zero. Make sure that the bubble of the level gauge is at
the center
e. Turn the wheel of the gearbox slowly while keeping the level gauge at its
position
f. Record the angle of twist shown by the protractor and the weight produced
every set angle (i.e. every 60 degree)
g. Continue turning and recording until the specimen breaks
